Album caption and index card: Hebgen Lake earthquake. This pump at the Narrow Motel, along the north shore of Hebgen Lake, was raised approximately 8 inches above a concrete base on which it once rested by a jet of sand and water, stemming from the compacted alluvial material. The people at the Narrows Motel were subjected to the earthquake, slump cracks that opened and closed as a result of the debris moving to the lake, the movement of the seiche back and forth, and then the sand spouts. As a result, when I spoke to them that night and the next morning, they were extremely nervous. Gallatin County, Montana. August 1959,

Album caption and index card: Hebgen Lake earthquake. Damaged cabin at Lakeview Motel, along the north shore of Hebgen Lake. This cabin purchased by a private party, was constructed during the summer of 1958 and 1959. Shortly after the cabin was completed the earthquake occurred, and the north shore was inundated by the waters of Hebgen Lake. The waters can be seen in the lower lefthand corner of the photograph. The cabin began to slide into the lake. The owner, with the aid of several laborers, tediously moved the cabin back about 50 feet to higher ground where it now sits. Gallatin County, Montana. August 1959.

Index card: The south edge of Dutchman Ridge. The Red Canyon fault scarp in this general area appears as a zone of small parallel fractures trending across the ridge. None of the fractures are displaced more than a foot or two. The main fault scarp begins again just around the corner of the hill. The mouth of Red Canyon shows along left side of photograph. This small fracture, which shows in the foreground, is parallel to the Red Canyon fault scarp which is about 150 yards to the left, outside the view of this photograph.
