These data are high-resolution bathymetry (riverbed elevation) and depth-averaged velocities in ASCII format, generated from hydrographic and velocimetric surveys near highway bridge structures over the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers on the periphery of Missouri, for dates ranging from 2008 to 2018. Hydrographic data were collected using a high-resolution multibeam echosounder mapping system (MBMS), which consists of a multibeam echosounder (MBES) and an inertial navigation system (INS) mounted on a marine survey vessel. These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. The minor clay step features are defined as having a vertical face that is less than or equal to 1.5 meters. The clay step features were qualitately identified using an underwater video monitoring sysyem. The extent and magnitude of the clay steps were mapped using a muliteam bathymetric echosounder system.

Scouring of streambed material surrounding bridge structures is a leading cause of bridge failure in the United States. Damages resulting from bridge failure oftentimes lead to financial burdens and loss of life. To date, there has been no comprehensive evaluation of the current (2016) effectiveness of the guidance or overall long-term performance of bridge-scour countermeasures provided in the Federal Highway Administration, Hydraulic Engineering Circular No. 23, Bridge Scour and Stream Instability Countermeasures. The elevation contours in this dataset have a 2-foot (ft) interval and were derived from a digital elevation model (DEM) of beach topography and nearshore bathymetry of Lake Superior at Minnesota Point, Duluth, Minnesota. The DEM has a 10-meter (32.8084 ft) cell size and was created from LiDAR data representing beach topography and sonar data representing bathymetry to a distance of approximately 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles) offshore. These data are bathymetry (lake bottom elevation) in XYZ format, generated from the April 9–10, 2018, survey of Bourbon Lake and Williams Lake near Loretto, Kentucky. Bathymetric and topographic data were collected using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and a real-time kinematic global positioning system (GPS). Data were collected as the AUV traversed the lake along planned survey lines, and these data were supplemented by manual GPS shots in a few areas the AUV could not reach. Data collection software integrated and stored the depth and position data from the AUV in real time. Data processing required computer software to extract bathymetry data from the raw data files and to summarize and map the information.

These data are bathymetry (river bottom elevation) and depth-averaged velocities generated from the September 17–18, 2020, survey of the Kentucky Dam tailwater from just downstream from Kentucky Dam to approximately 1,500 feet upstream from the I-24 bridge (about 1 mile total length). Bathymetry and velocity data were collected using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) with an integrated global navigation satellite system (GNSS) smart antenna with submeter accuracy. In January 2020, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) began work on the Interstate 26 (I 26) highway widening project that involves a bridge crossing over the French Broad River (FBR) near Asheville, North Carolina. The U.S Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the NCDOT conducted a pre-construction bathymetric survey of the streambed in June 2019 (Whaling and Wagner, 2021) within a one-kilometer reach of the FBR at the bridge construction site.
