Album caption: El Caracol - The Snail in Spanish. This name was first applied by John L. Stephens when he visited the site in 1841. Although the area was cleared in 1889 the first work on the building by Carnegie Institution of Washington was in 1925, and with the exception of 1928, work continued each year until completion in 1931. This photograph shows an early stage of the work on the West Annex in 1929. It is believed that this building was used as an astronomic obvservatory but such has not been definitely proved since apparently there have been some additions. It is likely that it was constructed during the period 1000-1200 A.D. No specific date has been determined although several date hieroglyphs were recovered...
