Album caption: Conglomerate in the sequence of Boner Knob, 7,200 ft on ridge between Mammoth Gulch and Adson Creek, just west of Forth of July fault. Clasts include purple sandstone, vein quartz, jasper, and single-crystal feldspar. Published as figure 3C.

Album caption: Thin-bedded argillite and siltstone, type locality of the sequence of Big Point. Notice interrupted bedding below and to right of hammer point caused by dewatering of silty beds through argillite; on bedding surfaces these interruption mimic mudcracks. Published as figure 3B.

Album caption: Oligocene pumiceous ask interbedded with paleolandslide material that has ash matrix and clasts of quartzite and granite. Exposure on north side of ridge north of Fourth of July Creek (NE ¼ sec. 14, T. 2 S., R. 12 W.) A clast-free layer occurs above large boulder next to man’s head. Another occurs just to left of tip of tree’s shadow below protruding block near top of picture. Published as figure 15.

Album caption: Trough crossbeds in upper beds of Black Lion Conglomerate near Helca. View is down the rough; in cross section the bedding laminations are part of crossbed sets that cut into underlying crossbeds. Published as figure 7.

Album caption: Trilobite tracks on quartzite bedding surface, lower member of the Silver Hill Formation, south side of structural dome near Helca. Published as figure 6C.

Album caption: Conglomerate beds of Black Lion conglomerate, above quartzite strata of figure 4A, same locality. Published as figure 4B.

Abum caption: Glendale, Montana, in 1983. Bedrock Geology of the Vipond Park 15-minute, Stine Mountain 7 1/2-minute, and Maurice Mountain 7 1/2-minute Quadrangles, Pioneer Mountains, Beaverhead County, Montana. Geological Survey (U.S.) Bulletin 1625. 1988. Published as frontispiece, bottom photograph.

Abum caption: Metamorphic mineral assemblages of slightly calcic pelitic rocks in and around the Taconic allochton. Photomicrographs of chloritoid (Cd)-biotite (Bt) assemblages. B, Sample234-1, with chlorite (Ch), staurolite (St), muscovite (Mu), plagioclase (Pa), and ilmenite (Ilm). Southwestern Massachusetts and adjacent Connecticut and New York. ca. 1966. Published as figure 16-B in U.S. Geological Survey. Professional paper 1113. 1981.

Album caption: Pelmatozoan fragment, bedding surface of quartzite bed at transition interval between Black Lion Conglomerate and lower member of the Silver Hill Formation, north side of structural dome near Hecla. Published as figure 6B.

Album caption: Metamorphic mineral assemblages of slightly calcic pelitic rocks in and around the Taconic allochton. Photomicrographs of sample 376-1 (cross-polarized light), showing ilmenite (Ilm) sandwiched between chlorite (Ch) plates. Also show is a bent (though not broken) ilmenite lath and stress-induced (?) twinning in a zoned porphyroblast of plagioclase (Pg). Southwestern Massachusetts and adjacent Connecticut and New York. circa 1966. Published as figure 4 in U.S. Geological Survey. Professional paper 1113. 1981.

Album caption: Polymictic conglomerate in the Red Lion Formation, south slope of Sheep Mountain. The angular clasts are tan, pink, and purple calcareous argillite in matrix of sandy carbonate that is slightly more resistant to weathering.

Album caption: Glacial striae on flat-lying quartzite, 9,230 ft on south shoulder of Stine Mountain. The striae stop abruptly at brink of headwall of later cirque glaciation; the uppermost of the Grouse Lakes, visible in the background, is nestled in the cirque. Formation of the striae probably required the ice to be at least 100 m thick. Because the top of Stine Mountain, the highest peak of the west Pioneer Mountains is at 9,490-foot elevation, the implication is that the peak was also under ice. Published as figure 20.

Album caption: Crossbedded pale-pinkish-gray feldspathic sandstone within the Black Loin [sic] Conglomerate, cliffs next to western couloir, north face of Sheep Mountain. Published as figure 4A.
thumbnail
Album caption: Recumbent and nearly isoclinal fold involving Proterozoic X gneiss and amphibolite; axial surface is parallel to foliation caused by mineral alignment in the rocks. North of 8,860-foot peak northwest of Sheep Mountain. Published as figure 2B.

Album caption: Metamorphic mineral assemblages of slightly calcic pelitic rocks in and around the Taconic allochton. Photomicrographs of coexisting staurolite (St) and epidote (Ep) in (B) sample590-1 (plane-polarized light) Other minerals present are garnet (Ga), biotite (Bt), and muscovite (Mu). Southwestern Massachusetts and adjacent Connecticut and New York. circa 1966. Published as figure 8-B in U.S. Geological Survey. Professional paper 1113. 1981
