Album caption and index card: View of ypical exposures of the Navajo Sandstone (JTn) and Temple Cap Sandstone. The narrow slot-like inner gorge of Zion Canyon is in the red lower part of the Navajo, and the wider upper part of the canyon is in the white part of the Navajo. The red Sinawava Member of the Temple Cap (Jtcs) weathers to form a narrow, tree-covered shelf above the white cliffs of the Navajo and below the white cross-bedded sandstone cliff of the White Throne Member of the Temple Cap (Jtcs). The limestone member of the Carmel Formation slope above the Temple Cap. The Temple Cap is about 52 meters thick. Album caption: Washington County, Utah. One of the finest of the Temples of the Virgin, Zion Canyon, Utah. Looking east, S.E. across canyon about 7 miles above Springdale. This rock is very impressive with its flanking columns, deeply arched face and white, dome like summit. The picture was taken just at sun down of a rather sombre evening, and does not benefit from the usual play of light and shade. Exposure 2 1/2 sec.
