The data are part of a larger, long-term project of lesser scaup on Lower Red Rock Lake, Montana, 2004-2015, conducted by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. This segment of the data has summarized results of late summer resighting surveys of nasal-marked adult females and GIS-derived habitat attributes. Scaup resighting surveys were conducted mid-August to early September, 2007-2013. The study site was divided into 16 survey plots (as shown as grid in figure); each plot comprised one to four 750 × 750 m survey blocks such that plots contained roughly equivalent area of open water Survey data included GPS location, number, and social status of marked females, wind conditions, and group size of other scaup associated...

This data set contains daily survival rates from 81 studies of passerine obligate grassland bird species that primarily breed in the United States; patch size information was extracted when available. Temperature and precipitation variables were calculated for the study sites and years the data were collected. The studies we used collected data across the period 1978 to 2013.

Water is essential to life because its unique properties facilitate a vast number of biochemical processes that enable all organisms to exist. Maintenance of proper water concentration in the body is thus a vital activity. Colonization of terrestrial habitats placed organisms in desiccating environments that emphasized problems of water balance. The procurement and economical use of water has since been a central organizing theme in biology and has shaped the morphology, physiology, behavior, and spatial distribution of organisms. In hot, and environments like North American deserts, organisms are faced with especially challenging abiotic conditions characterized by variable and often extreme temperatures, intense...

This dataset contains the physical collection information (e.g., sample location, date, gear type) and microsatellite DNA genotype of egg and larval Lake Sturgeon collected in the St. Clair and Detroit rivers in 2015 and 2016. Individuals were genotyped for 18 microsatellite loci (13 disomic and 5 polysomic). Alleles (base pair sizes) were recorded as presence absence scores (1:present, 2:absent, 0:missing data) for all previously observed alleles. Thus individual genotypes were recorded as pseudo diploid dominant phenotypes resulting in individual vectors of length n=205 for each genotyped egg or larval individual.

The data set provides information on the fledging times of passerine grassland birds. Data were collected from video surveillance of 70 nests of 9 bird species that nested in grasslands of Minnesota and North Dakota, USA. The data include year, unique nest number, species, date and time of fledging by nestling.

Pollination is a critical ecosystem service affected by various drivers of land-use change, such as policies and programs aimed at land resources, market values for crop commodities, local land-management decisions, and shifts in climate. The United States is the world's most active market for pollination services by honey bees, and the Northern Great Plains provide the majority of bee colonies used to meet the Nation's annual pollination needs. Legislation requiring increased production of biofuel crops, increasing commodity prices for crops of little nutritional value for bees in the Northern Great Plains, and reductions in government programs aimed at promoting land conservation are converging to alter the regional...

This collection contains numerous zoological specimens from the southwestern United States. Specimens were collected beginning in the 1920s through 2013 and include mammals, fish, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. This is a legacy collection that was transferred to the USGS from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) in 1996 when the unit that would become the Biological Resources Division became part of the USGS. Specimens were accessioned as museum property in 2002, 2003, and 2006. The collection contains voucher specimens of vertebrates collected on Federal land in the western United States. It is administered by the USGS Fort Collins Science Center and housed at the Museum of Southwestern Biology at the University...
