An interdisciplinary and multiagency study was undertaken to study harmful algal bloom (HAB) dynamics on the Caloosahatchee River, which drains to the west from Lake Okeechobee into the Gulf of Mexico. Algae and cyanobacteria play crucial roles in aquatic ecosystems, but under favorable environmental conditions certain taxa may experience population growth booms resulting in HABs. Four independent mesocosm experiments were conducted in September 2019, June 2020, September 2020, and February 2021 to capture natural temporal variability in water quality and phytoplankton assemblages. The experimental installation consisted of three floating metal cradles each containing four fiberglass chambers filled with native...

A camera was deployed to monitor cyanobacterial surface blooms occurring in Willow Creek Reservoir in Heppner, Oregon. The camera was positioned above the water and facing downwards to achieve the desired contrast in colors. With the appropriate permissions from USACE, the camera was attached to a railing of the Willow Creek Dam in the northwest corner of the reservoir about 70 feet above the surface of the water. The system was powered by a solar panel and large battery. The camera was programmed to take a series of 5 pictures from different angles every 15 minutes during daylight hours. During 2015, the camera was installed on May 14 and retrieved on November 9. A polarizing lens specific to the Axis 214 camera...
As harmful algal blooms (HABs) increase in magnitude and duration worldwide, they are becoming an expanding threat to marine wildlife. Over the past decade, domoic acid (DA) and saxitoxin (STX) have been increasingly problematic bicoastally in the United States. We investigated pooled seabird mortality data from opportunistic sampling events between 2007-2018, across three states, to examine the patterns and role of DA and STX in seabird mortality events from the continental United States. Patterns in DA and STX levels and affected tissue type were reviewed, and two specific accounts of localized and pervasive event types were examined. There has been increased toxin detection with expanded tissue testing during...

Streamflow was measured at the three largest inflows (the Foster, NT, and ST sites) of Willow Creek Lake and at the outflow of the lake. Flow data were typically available at a 15-minute frequency, but generally were summarized as daily means. Flow data for the Foster, NT, and outflow sites were provided by the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources (NDNR) and were estimated using stage-flow relations applied to measured stage following protocols described by Kennedy (1983). Flow at the ST site was measured by the U.S. Geological Survey using an indirect rating curve with water levels monitored continuously by a submersible pressure transducer and periodic streamflow measurements collected using a Parshall flume...

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are overgrowths of algae or cyanobacteria in water and can be harmful to humans and animals directly via toxin exposure or indirectly via changes in water quality and related impacts to ecosystems services, drinking water characteristics, and recreation. While HABs occur frequently throughout the United States, the driving conditions behind them are not well understood, especially in flowing waters. In order to facilitate future national model development and characterization of HABs, this data release publishes a synthesized and cleaned collection of HABs-related water quality and quantity data for river and stream sites across the United States. It includes nutrients, major ions, sediment,...

Flow interaction between Willow Creek Lake and groundwater was calculated from a lake water balance (Healy and others, 2007) in which all of the other flow components were either measured or estimated between 2012 and 2014 (as described in Rus and others, 2018) and the interaction was the residual term. Inflow terms consisted of streamflow at three sites (Foster, NT, and ST) as well as the direct precipitation onto the lake. Measured outflow terms consisted of the streamflow at the outflow site and the direct evaporation from the lake. Increases in lake storage had the same effect on the water balance as an outflow. All components of the water balance were tabulated on a daily basis and converted to units of acre-feet...

Quantitative phytoplankton data was collected as part of an interdisciplinary and multiagency experimental study investigating harmful algal bloom (HAB) dynamics in the Caloosahatchee River located in southwestern Florida. Algae and cyanobacteria play crucial roles in aquatic ecosystems, but under favorable environmental conditions such as nutrient enrichment certain taxa may experience population growth booms resulting in HABs. HABs are becoming increasing common in the Caloosahatchee and the Lake Okeechobee system, yet the drivers and processes controlling these events is still under investigation. Here, three independent mesocosm experiments were conducted on the Caloosahatchee River at the W. P. Franklin Lock...

The Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP) began in January 2015 with the purpose of deepening the Savannah Harbor federal shipping channel to allow access to larger shipping vessels (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 2018a). There are various features and mitigation efforts to the SHEP, one of which is the installation of a dissolved-oxygen (DO) injection system at two locations along the Savannah River to maintain pre-SHEP DO levels in the harbor (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 2018b). The injection systems are installed upstream near Georgia Power Plant McIntosh in Effingham County, Georgia and downstream near Hutchinson Island, Chatham County, Georgia. Designed to maintain DO levels in the harbor as they were before...

Algal toxins are a growing concern worldwide. Rapid assessment test strips are a newer technology and their accuracy in detecting toxins in different lakes with different phytoplankton and toxins present is unknown. This data release is supported by our testing of toxin test strips. This research took place in Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota. The research will indicate whether these test strips are accurate for this system, and hopefully lay the foundation for a cost-effective harmful algal blooms (HABs) monitoring and communication tool for Voyageurs National Park and other parks. The utility of the test strips in this system may lead to broader applications, for instance in other inland systems like...

Site-specific multiple linear regression models were developed for eight sites in Ohio—six in the Western Lake Erie Basin and two in northeast Ohio on inland reservoirs--to quickly predict action-level exceedances for a cyanotoxin, microcystin, in recreational and drinking waters used by the public. Real-time models include easily- or continuously-measured factors that do not require that a sample be collected. Real-time models are presented in two categories: (1) six models with continuous monitor data, and (2) three models with on-site measurements. Real-time models commonly included variables such as phycocyanin, pH, specific conductance, and streamflow or gage height. Many of the real-time factors were averages...
