Migrating shorebirds and waterfowl are so dependent on the food supply and stopover estuary habitat in the lower Coquille River that Congress established Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge (OR) in 1983. Through congressionally approved expansion, acquisition, and donation, the Refuge now encompasses 889 acres and is composed of two units: Bandon Marsh and Ni-les'tun (named by the Coquille Tribe and pronounced NYE-les-ton, which means People by the small fish dam). Historically, Ni-les’tun was a diverse tidal wetland like Bandon Marsh but was diked and drained for agricultural purposes beginning in the mid to late 1800s. Restoring 418 acres of the tidal marsh has required FWS and its many partners to collaborate...

Due to anthropogenic activities and large stochastic events within the drainage, Gooseberry Creek no longer has a population of CRC above a man made Gabion structure. Gooseberry Creek is a small tributary and cannot support a large population of CRC to persist without connectivity to Trout Creek and Sage Creek. When passage is provided through the structures, approximately 1.5 miles of Gooseberry Creek will be available for CRC and other native fish for spawning, rearing and other life history needs. This project is part of an ongoing effort to improve aquatic and riparian habitat within the Greater Little Mountain area to increase the range of the native Colorado River cutthroat (CRC) trout. The Gooseberry Fish...

This dataset was created as a way to have standard fish distribution datasets across the various fish species for the study area. This was needed because the original source datasets for fish distributions came from several different sources and were at various scales and also overlapped. To fix the issues in the source datasets we walked the original data over to the NHD Plus hydrography. This table contains information about the amount of each threat analysis attribute, indicator and metric quantified for the 6th level Hydrological Unit (HUC12). These attributes were calculated for the entire HUC 12, the streams within the HUC 12, or the riparian corridor within the HUC 12. The attributes were calculated using ArcMap Tools. These data are provided by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) "as is" and may contain errors or omissions. This map summarizes information presented in the other chapters of the report, including background information on the Bureau of Land Management and Rapid Ecoregional Assessments (REAs), and the REA components that are addressed by the Wyoming Basin REA. In addition, we provide two-page summaries for each Change Agent (development, invasive species, fire, and climate change) and Conservation Element (species and communities) assessed by the Wyoming Basin REA. The REA?s provide an assessment of 1) baseline conditions for long-term monitoring of broad-scale conditions and trends; 2) landscape-level intactness of ecological communities, habitats for priority species, and the ecoregion overall; and 3) a predictive capacity...

In 1991, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a study of more than 50 major river basins across the Nation as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) project of the National Water-Quality Program. One of the major goals of the NAWQA project is to determine how water-quality and ecological conditions change over time. To support that goal, long-term consistent and comparable ecological monitoring has been conducted on streams and rivers throughout the Nation. Fish, invertebrate, and algae data collected as part of the NAWQA program were retrieved from the USGS Aquatic Bioassessment database for use in trend analysis. Ultimately, these data will provide insight into how natural features and human...

Final Report WaterSMART Agreement No. R13AP80033Introduction: Sky Island Alliance is a non‐governmental organization that works to protect and restore the rich natural heritage of native species and habitats in the Sky Island Region. We work with volunteers, scientists, land‐owners, public officials, and government agencies to establish protected areas, restore healthy landscapes, and promote public appreciation of the region’s unique biological diversity.Springs are keystone ecosystems in the Sky Island Region, exert disproportionate influence on surrounding landscapes, and are known to be biodiversity hotspots. Although they are abundant in this arid region, they are poorly documented and little studied. Changing...
On April 13, 2015, the Great Basin LCC hosted a webinar about new Sage-Grouse conservation data presented by the National Wetlands Inventory.Nevada’s wetlands are important havens for local wildlife. Past and current changes in climate and land use practices have stressed many sensitive wetland systems across Nevada, putting the wildlife they support at risk. For greater sage-grouse, wetlands also play an important role in providing brood rearing habitat. This project is mapping areas of high priority sage grouse habitat in Nevada and will move towards mapping areas of other wetlands in future years with additional funding. Mapping of other important landscapes such as upland riparian habitat are also part of this...

FY2017There is an increasing concern and need for the conservation of springsnails and other endemic mollusks and for conservation of the unique spring and springbrook habitats on which they depend (Hershler et al 2014; Abele 2011). Nationwide, several of these species have been listed as endangered or threatened under provisions of the ESA; others are candidates for federal listing or are undergoing review by USFWS for possible future listing actions. These species can be particularly susceptible to localized threats and specific knowledge necessary for effective site-based conservation is often limited or lacking.Springsnail are particularly susceptible to extinction because the entire population of any single...

This dataset is a component of a complete package of products from the Connect the Connecticut project. Connect the Connecticut is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conserving the Connecticut River Watershed for future generations, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural ecosystems they inhabit. Click here to download the full data package, including all documentation. This dataset represents the selection index used to create aquatic ecosystem-based cores. The selection index is a continuous surface in which every cell is assigned a value (0-1) based on its relative ecological integrity within each HUC6 watershed. Specifically, the selection index is equal to the...
