Invertebrate, fish, and habitat data were collected as part of a cooperative project that began in 2002 between the U.S. Geological Survey, Colorado Springs Utilities, and Colorado Springs Engineering. Other entities have contributed to the project over the years including Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Data were primarily collected from up to 35 sites – 33 sites within the Fountain Creek Basin but also from two sites on the Arkansas River. The number of sites sampled each year as well as the number of annual visits during which data were collected, and sampling methods used during each visit vary. Data were collected between 2002 and 2023 and is intended to be updated annually as new data are collected and available....

The Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, housed at the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) was developed during a reevaluation of Lake Erie Areas of Concern (AOCs) from 1998-2000. These AOCs were recognized as such by the International Joint Commission (IJC) of the United States and Canada due to their severe water pollution problems. The dataset includes data from both the 1998-2000 reevaluation as well as data from other historical evaluations from the 1980’s to mid-1990’s for comparison where available. Data Description: Rivers and harbors of the Great Lakes have been impacted for decades by heavy industrialization, densely populated areas, and agriculture resulting in contamination, eutrophication,...

ABSTRACT: The pressure on water resources from energy resource development and transformation is likely to be greater in the future than it has been in the past. A rational resolution of the political problems that this situation will generate requires that: 1) planning based on predictions of future energy supply and demand be replaced by scenario, or “what if?” analysis; 2) full attention be paid to the uncertainties in per-unit-energy water requirements; 3) suitable stochastic measures of water availability be used to compare water supply with water demand; 4) realistic ecological criteria, and other alternative use criteria, be developed for estimating impacts of water withdrawn or consurned for energy development;...
Crustacean zooplankton were collected, enumerated, identified, and measured within the St. Clair-Detroit River System (SCDRS). Collections were made using a 0.5 m diameter 153 um zooplankton net. Nets were lowered to ~0.5 m from bottom depth and retrieved. Nets were utilized with a General Oceanics flowmeter to calculate the distance the net traveled. At sites of collection, both temperature (degrees C) and Secchi depth (m) were collected for abiotic influencing factors of the zooplankton community. Collected specimens were narcotized in sugar formalin. Specimens were enumerated, identified, and measured under a dissection microscope. Volumetric estimates (m^-3) were obtained by applying the distance traveled and...

These normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) raster data were compiled to develop time series data of the lower Colorado River (LCR) riparian corridor vegetation greenness and phenology since the year 2000. An objective of our study was to evaluate short and long-term effects of drought and biocontrol on LCR riparian and aquatic ecosystems south of Hoover Dam. These data represent spatially explicit scaled normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI*) difference maps between two decades (2000 to 2010 and 2011 to 2020) and two 5 year periods (2000 to 2005 and 2016 to 2020). NDVI* is an additional correction to the NDVI to account for the illumination conditions; it is a processing correction step to improve...

This dataset contains tabulated-data of dissolved oxygen concentrations collected at Levittown Lake, Toa Baja, Puerto Rico. The standard light-dark method was used to determine the primary productivity in phytoplankton. The method consists in the in-situ incubation of two light-and-dark bottles for approximately four hours. Dissolved oxygen concentrations were estimated using the Winkler method. A total of twelve in-situ incubations were conducted on a monthly basis from April 2010 to June 2011. For each bottle incubated, two or three titrations were conducted and an average of the dissolved concentrations is calculated.

The Hells Canyon Complex (HCC) is comprised of a series of three consecutive reservoirs (Brownlee, Oxbow, and Hells Canyon) along a 145 km reach of the Snake River bordered by Idaho to the east and Oregon to the west. Due to concerns regarding mercury (Hg) contamination within the HCC, in cooperation with Idaho Power Company, the U.S. Geological Survey has been leading an investigation into the sources, transport, microbial transformations, chemical speciation and bioaccumulation of Hg in this complex river-reservoir environment. This data release is focused on the sediment component of this larger effort and includes data collected between 2014 and 2018 from shallow surface sediment (≤ top 5 cm) and from sectioned...

These full time-series period statistics data were compiled for monitoring riparian zone trends and changes in the lower Colorado as part of a study to document riparian ecosystem health and its water use. Our study evaluated the short and long-term effects on the river's vegetation of drought and hydrological processes in this dryland region. Because of the landscape changes, we explored remote sensing-based change analysis techniques and data to develop time series data of the Colorado River riparian corridor vegetation greenness, phenology, and water use since the year 2000. We divided the river into five Reaches (R3..R7) to separate between the different land covers, management conditions, and general geospatial...

This Fish Community Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the fish communities sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), fish were sampled for identification and measurement of length and weight. Identification of fish were done by the same biologists for both the 1998-2000 data and the 1986-87 historical data (Smith et al. 1994). Any fish difficult to identify were preserved in buffered formalin for later identification. If large numbers of a particular species were collected the first thirty fish were measured and weighed; remaining fish were individually measured and group weighed. All...

The dataset contains the selected physical properties and chemical constituents that were measured at Caño Boquerón, Cabo Rojo, and Puerto Mosquito, Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico during a diurnal cycle. Two diel studies were conducted per lagoon to determine the community primary productivity. Photosynthesis creates oxygen which enhances microbiological activity and results in the production of organic matter. Primary productivity is important for supporting the food web in aquatic ecosystems. The field data collection included the measurement of temperature, dissolved oxygen, and percent of oxygen saturation. Measurements were obtained at about 1 hour intervals. Diel studies were conducted on October 29, 2015 and...
