Aerial imagery for the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) Navigational Pool 5 drawdown follow-up was collected in true color (TC) in August of 2015 at 6”/pixel using a mapping-grade Applanix DSS 439 digital aerial camera. All TC aerial images were orthorectified, mosaicked, and compressed into a JPEG2000-format image. The TC aerial images were interpreted and automated using a genus-level 150-class Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) vegetation classification. The 2015 vegetation database was prepared by or under the supervision of competent and trained professional staff using documented standard operated procedures.
Observations and subtle shifts of vegetation communities in western Lake Erie have USGS researchers concerned about the potential for Grass Carp to alter these vegetation communities. Broad-scale surveys of vegetation using remote sensing and GIS mapping, coupled with on-the-ground samples in key locations will permit assessment of the effect Grass Carp may have already had on aquatic vegetation communities and establish baseline conditions for assessing future effects. Existing aerial imagery was used with object-based image analysis to detect and map aquatic vegetation in the western basin of Lake Erie.

This data set includes bi-monthly data on submerged aquatic vegetation species composition, percent cover, above and below ground biomass and environmental data at coastal sites across the fresh to saline gradient in Barataria Bay, LA. This project was co-funded by the South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center and the Gulf Coast Prairie and the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperatives. The objective of this work is to delineate areas in the Upper Mississippi River System where the combined effects of water clarity and water level fluctuation conditions are not limiting the establishment and persistence of submersed aquatic vegetation. We note that other factors, such as herbivory or high current velocity may actively prevent establishment of submersed aquatic vegetation in areas of the Upper Mississippi River System, and that this analysis is based on physical constraints imposed by water clarity and water level fluctuation only. This portion of the USGS data release presents eelgrass distribution and bathymetry data derived from acoustic surveys of the Nisqually River delta, Washington in 2012 (USGS Field Activity Number D-01-12-PS). Eelgrass and bathymetry data were collected from the R/V George Davidson equipped with a single-beam sonar system and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver. The sonar system consisted of a Biosonics DT-X single-beam echosounder and 420 kHz transducer with a 6-degree beam angle. Depths from the echosounder were computed using sound velocity assuming a salinity of 30 psu and temperature of 10 degrees Celcius. Seagrasses are highly productive ecosystems. A before-after-control-impact (BACI) design was used to examine effects of dredging on seagrasses and the animals that inhabit them. The control site North Biscayne Bay (NBB) and impacted site Port of Miami (POM) had seagrass densities decreased during the before, Fish and Invertebrate Assessment Network (FIAN) 2006-2011 and after, Faunal Monitoring Due to Harbor Dredging (FMHD) 2014-2016 studies. Turbidity levels increased at NBB and POM basins during the FMHD study, especially in 2016. Animal populations decreased significantly in NBB and POM in the FMHD study compared to the FIAN study. This dataset records Cladophora and associated submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) biomass collected approximately monthly during the growing season starting in 2018 at stations located along the U.S. shoreline of Lakes Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. It also records a variety of supporting data collected at Cladophora measurement stations.
