Groundwater residence times were simulated for the major regional aquifers of the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain aquifer system from New York to North Carolina using particle tracking in a regional groundwater flow model. Millions of particles were distributed throughout the aquifers of the North Atlantic Coastal Plain in a MODFLOW model with a volume-weighted algorithm, then tracked backwards using MODPATH6 (Pollock, 2012) until termination of their paths at their sources of origin, usually the simulated water table. Background A major focus of the NAWQA Program in its second decade (2002-2013) is on regional- and national-scale assessments of groundwater-quality status and trends in principal aquifers. This data release includes grids representing the depth and thickness of drinking-water withdrawal zones, polygons of hydrogeologic settings, an inventory of sources of well construction data, and summaries of data comparisons used to assess the depth of groundwater used for drinking-water supplies in the United States. This geospatial dataset represents a prototype of a finer-scale representation of the principal aquifers of the United States, using four original principal aquifers in the Upper Midwest, United States, which were re-analyzed and condensed into three updated principal aquifers. The original principal aquifer definitions and extents were published in the Ground Water Atlas of the United States at a scale of 1:5,000,000. This dataset contains the original data, analysis data, and a results synopsis of 12 slug tests performed in 7 wells completed in unconfined fractured bedrock near the North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. Aquifers tested include extrusive and intrusive volcanic rocks and slate. Estimated hydraulic conductivity range from 10.2 to 2x10-6 feet/day. A hydrogeologic framework was developed by USGS during 2016-19 to describe the groundwater system on the Virginia Eastern Shore. This USGS data release contains text files of (1) interpreted borehole hydrogeologic-unit top-surface altitudes, (2) summary values of previously documented estimates of aquifer hydraulic properties, and (3) groundwater-sample chloride concentrations and well summary statistics.
