We examined bird and bat mortality at a new 89-turbine windfarm constructed in an environmentally sensitive area in north-central Iowa. The windfarm became operational in November 2001. It is located in cropland between three Wildlife Management Areas (WMA's) with historically high bird use. In the past, migrant and resident waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds moved between the WMA's through the area now occupied by the windfarm. Studies of bird collision mortality in California and elsewhere raised concerns about the possibility of mortalities in this area. From April 15, 2003 and December 15, 2003 we searched for dead animals under 26 randomly selected turbines. Six 76.2 m by 3.0 m transects were maintained...

These are the boundaries of current Land Use Plans. Represents the spatial extent and boundaries for existing BLM Land Use Planning Area (LUPA) polygons. Land Use Planning Areas are geographic areas within which the BLM will make decisions during a land use planning effort. Land Use Planning Area Boundaries shift from an "in-progress" status and become Existing Land Use Planning Areas when the Land Use Plan has been approvided and a Record of Decision Date has been established. At this point, these LUPAs are officially "existing".

This map shows all the places conservation elements. Some of the places included exhibit high biodiversity or ecological and cultural value. This map also shows other managed areas from the Protected Areas Database, as well as those that are excluded. Associated input datasets are also included; they relate to biodiversity, special areas, and development. These data are provided by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) "as is" and may contain errors or omissions. The User assumes the entire risk associated with its use of these data and bears all responsibility in determining whether these data are fit for the User's intended use. These data were compiled to create models that estimate entrainment rates and population growth rates of smallmouth bass below Glen Canyon Dam. Objective(s) of our study were to predict smallmouth bass entrainment rates and population growth under different future scenarios of Lake Powell elevations and management. These data represent parameters needed for associated models and data needed to produce figures. These data were collected from publicly available online sources including published papers and federal government datasets. These data were assembled by researchers from U.S. Geological Survey, Utah State University, Colorado State University, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These data can be used to run...

ThThe purpose of the Coral Reef Evaluation and Monitoring Project (CREMP) is to monitor the status and trends of selected reefs in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary(FKNMS). CREMP assessments have been conducted annually at fixed sites since 1996 and data collected provides information on the temporal changes in benthic cover and diversity of stony corals and associated marine flora and fauna. The core field methods continue to be underwater videography and timed coral species inventories. Findings presented in this report include data from 109 stations at 37 sites sampled from 1996 through 2008 in the Florida Keys and 1999 through 2008 in the Dry Tortugas. The report describes the annual differences (between...

The energy consumption and fossil CO2 emissions from the Canadian vegetable greenhouse industry were assessed using greenhouse statistics from 2002 to 2007. The fossil CO2 emissions were compared to the fossil CO2 emitted during transport of an equal weight of food by truck and by airplane from two horticultural production centers in the southern USA to four locations in Canada. The calculations in this paper for Canadian greenhouse energy use for heating were verified against farm energy use survey data collected from greenhouse operators in 1996. Allowing for extrapolations to 1996 from the 2002 to 2007 period, the survey data were underestimated by 12%. Since the survey data were not corrected for possible household...
Note: A new version of these statistics based on PAD-US 2.0 will be made available in 2020 here. This summary of the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) is created to provide land managers and decision makers with a general summary of management for conservation, natural resource management and recreation. Area statistics include total acreage, acres by managing agency and percent protection. These summaries are available for the nation and by state. The PAD-US 1.4 Combined feature class (with Marine Protected Areas removed) was modified to remove overlaps, avoiding overestimation in protected area statistic summaries. A Python scripted process prioritized overlapping designations (for example,...

Mandatory targets for biofuels have led to their rapid global adoption, but ethical problems with their large-scale production are widely reported. Research is underway to find new biofuel technologies that mitigate climate change and can be produced sustainably and economically. Following an 18-month inquiry, the Nuffield Council on Bioethics has developed an ethical framework for biofuels policy-making. Based on a number of widely held ethical values, six ethical principles are introduced that should be considered in biofuels policy-making. Many current biofuels policies fail this ethical ‘test’. An overarching ethical standard for biofuels is proposed that includes the protection of human rights and the environment,...

This is version 2.0 of Tungsten Deposits in the United States. This data release provides the descriptions of approximately 100 U.S. sites that include mineral regions, mineral occurrences (deposits), and mine features that contain enrichments of tungsten (W). This data release reports on U.S. mines and deposits with greater than or equal to 215 metric tons of tungsten metal (30,000 short ton units of tungsten trioxide). Sites in this database occur in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, Utah and Washington. As a part of the process set forth by Executive Order 13817, the USGS National Minerals Information Center (NMIC) identified W as a critical mineral...
