The National Park Service (NPS), in conjunction with the Biological Resources Division (BRD) of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), has implemented a program to "develop a uniform hierarchical vegetation methodology" at a national level. The program will also create a geographic information system (GIS) database for the parks under its management. The purpose of the data is to document the state of vegetation within the NPS service area during the 1990's, thereby providing a baseline study for further analysis at the Regional or Service-wide level. The vegetation at Devils Tower National Monument was mapped using 1:16,000 scale U.S. Forest Service Color Aerial Photography acquired July 29, 1993. The mapping classification...

The vegetation units on this map were determined through the stereoscopic interpretation of aerial photographs supported by field sampling and ecological analysis. The vegetation boundaries were identified on the photographs by means of the photographic signature and collateral information on slope, hydrology, geography, and vegetation in accordance with the Standardized National Vegetation Classification System (October 1995). The mapped vegetation reflects conditions that existed during the specific year and season that the aerial photographs were taken. There is a margin of error inherent in the use of aerial photographs. Therefore, a detailed ground and historical analysis of a single site may result in a revision...

This geospatial database covers vegetation land cover and land use for Wind Cave National Park and surrounding areas and is authorized as part of the USGS/NPS Vegetation Mapping Program http://www.usgs.gov/core_science_systems/csas/vip/index.html. The program is administered by the Biological Resources Division (BRD) of the United States Geological Survey (USGS). This mapping effort was performed by the US Bureau of Reclamation's (USBR) Remote Sensing and GIS Group, Technical Service Center, Denver, CO. The vegetation mapping program is part of a larger Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) program started by the National Park Service (NPS) http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/. I&M goals are, among others, to map the vegetation...

This map depicts 25 USNVC vegetation association classes and groups for Shenandoah National Park developed from AVIRIS hyperspectral imagery, ASTER multispectral imagery and topographic modeling (version 2.0b). Overall accuracy of this map is 60.5% as determined from 703 accuracy assessment field plots.

The vegetation and landcover of Valley Forge National Historical Park (VAFO) were mapped to the association level of the National Vegetation Classification System developed by The Nature Conservancy and network of Natural Heritage Programs. The mapping process was based on the USGS-NPS Vegetation Mapping Program with some modifications due to the size of the mapped polygons. A total of 308 plots were used to assess the thematic accuracy of the database. The estimated overall thematic accuracy of the database is 81.20 percent. At a 90 percent confidence interval, the estimated minimum overall thematic accuracy is 77.40 percent and the estimated maximum is 85.00 percent. Based on hypothesis testing, the final association...

This feature class contains complete polygonal coverage (map units) for two management units of Casa Grande Ruins NM. Each polygon has been attributed with either Alliance or Association level vegetation community names. Polygons were drafted using heads-up digitzing methods in ESRI ArcMap software using Quickbird satellite data as a guide and were subsequently field verified for accuracy. Field verification and species level attribution occured during March 2008. Edits to polygon boundaries and attribution were done using ESRI ArcMap software at the Sonoran Desert Network office. Polygons were verified and validated using standard ArcGIS topolgy rules.

This shapefile is an vegetation map of George Washington Birthplace National Monument, VA. It was developed by The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Natural Heritage in cooperation with North Carolina State University's Center for Earth Observation for the Northeast Region of the National Park Service. The data was created following general guidelines set forth by the USGS-NPS Vegetation Mapping Program. Map classes are crosswalked to the U.S. National Vegetation Classification (USNVC) or level II of the Anderson's land use land cover classification system. Crosswalks to the USNVC were determined on June 15, 2007. The map is based on field work performed in the summer of 2002 and 2003...
