This is a GIS data layer representing submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) of the Barnegat Bay - Little Egg Harbor estuary, 2009, developed by classifying high resolution airborne digital camera imagery. Included are the submerged aquatic vegetation densities mapped into three classes throughout the study area and their respective area and perimeter for each polygon. The three classes of SAV are: 1) Dense (80% - 100% cover), 2) Moderate (40% - 80% cover), and 3) Sparse (10% - 40% cover). For full documentation, please refer to the technical report, 'Assessment of Seagrass Status in the Barnegat Bay - Little Egg Harbor Estuary System: 2003 and 2009 (Rutgers University, Lathrop and Haag, 2010), which is listed in the...

This project evaluates the effects of global climate change and sea level rise on estuarine intertidal habitat in the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Flyway migratory waterbirds that rely on this habitat. Phase 2 of this project is a continuation of work to evaluate the effects of global climate change and sea level rise (SLR) on intertidal shoals in the San Francisco Bay Estuary and the migratory waterbirds that rely on this critically important resource in the Pacific Flyway. The primary objectives are to: 1) use downscaled global climate change models to translate SLR and climate scenarios into habitat quantity predictions through Delft3D and Dflow-FM (unstructured grid) geomorphic modeling; 2) model the response...

Multispectral satellite images from two reaches of the Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas were acquired between August 6, 2021, and September 15, 2021, to support research on remote sensing of benthic algae. The images included in this data release were obtained by the WorldView3 and Planet SkySat sensors. The original images were cropped to produce smaller subset images focused on each of the two primary study reaches. In addition, the WorldView3 images were geo-referenced and warped to improve alignment with field measurements. This data release includes a comma-delimited (*.csv) text file with a listing of the satellite images with columns: River, Reach, AcquisitionDate, Sensor, PixelSizeMeters, Projection,...

Digital aerial photographs of the Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas were acquired on August 24, 2021 to support research on remote sensing of benthic algae. The images included in this data release were obtained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service using the following key pieces of equipment: Quest Kodiak K100 aircraft, PhaseOne iXURS-1000 4-band (RGB and NIR) 100 mega-pixel medium format digital camera, SOMAG gyro-stabilized/vibration isolation sensor mounting, and POS AV510 GNSS/IMU navigational system. The original images were processed using photogrammetry software to generate orthophotos for the entire project area, delivered as GeoTIFF tiles. The tiles covering each of the two primary study reaches...

Field measurements of water depth and percent cover of benthic algae were acquired from two reaches of the Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas August 24-25, 2021, to support research on remote sensing of benthic algae from aerial photographs and satellite images. The depth measurements included in this data release were obtained by wading the channel and measuring water depth with a stadia rod. Percent of algae cover on the streambed at each sample point was estimated visually to the nearest 10% on a scale from 0.0 to 1.0. The spatial location of each measurement was obtained using a Leica Zeno GG04 RTK GPS receiver. The map projection and datum for these data are UTM Zone 15 N and WGS84, respectively. This...

Detecting trends in biological attributes is central to many stream monitoring programs; however, understanding how natural variability in environmental factors affects trend results is not well understood. We evaluated the influence of antecedent streamflow and sample timing (covariates) on trend estimates for fish, invertebrate, and diatom taxa richness and biological condition from 2002 to 2012 at 51 sites distributed across the conterminous United States. This data release contains all of the input and output files necessary to reproduce the results presented and discussed in the associated journal article.
In 1991, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a study of more than 50 major river basins across the Nation as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) project of the National Water-Quality Program. One of the major goals of the NAWQA project is to determine how water-quality and ecological conditions change over time. To support that goal, long-term consistent and comparable ecological monitoring has been conducted on streams and rivers throughout the Nation. Fish, invertebrate, and algae data collected as part of the NAWQA program were retrieved from the USGS Aquatic Bioassessment database for use in trend analysis. Ultimately, these data will provide insight into how natural features and human...
The Willamette River Basin, Oregon, supports native fish species and non-native fish species introduced for sport fisheries or accidentally from aquarium releases and other sources. Based on fish surveys completed from 1998 to 2018 by Oregon State University and records from the Oregon State University Ichthyology Collection, the Willamette River Basin has 34 native fish species found upstream of the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers and 28 non-native fish species. Each native and non-native fish species has its own thermal tolerances and diet, spawning, and vertical preference traits. This means that distributions of native and non-native fishes along the river network are shaped by physical factors...
Variability in sediment properties with depth and the thickness of individual sedimentary layers are critical determinants of seabed acoustic response. The New England Mud Patch (NEMP), located south of Cape Cod, is an unusual feature on the U.S. Continental Shelf in that it is composed of fine-grained sediment layers containing a relatively-homogeneous mix of sand, silt, and clay-sized particles bounded by more typical sandy shelf sediments. The unique characteristics and nature of this deposit is due to a derivation of sediments that have been transported to, and deposited in, a basal bowl-shaped depression since the last glacial maximum. Ninety-two piston, vibra-, and gravity cores with a maximum length of 8.2...
This data product was created as part of the Northwest Atlantic Marine Ecoregional Assessment. The Nature Conservancy developed this science-based ecoregional assessment for the Northwest Atlantic Marine region (Bay of Fundy to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina). This assessment synthesizes information on oceanography, chemistry, geology, biology, and social science to inform decisions about coastal and marine ecosystems. By integrating this information at a regional level, the Conservancy is able to provide both a greater understanding of the interrelated biological diversity of the marine ecoregion, and a clearer picture of the current condition of its natural areas and the challenges to their continued persistence....
