Data to support the site characterization of locations sampled along the continental shelf and slope of the western U.S. coast off Washington, Oregon and California during the EXPRESS RL1905 expedition in 2019. Data consisted of tissue samples from fauna, sediments and particulate organic matter. These samples were analyzed for stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes to examine food web ecology. Additional observational data were collected through video analyses with efforts focused on documenting counts of fauna other than corals, sponges and fishes, as well as general habitat characteristics.

This dataset is a digital surface of depth-averaged flow velocities for six sites where known rock structures exist in the St. Croix River. Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) are used to measure how fast water is moving across an entire water column. The data consist of counts of sea urchins in quadrats from over 600 nearshore rocky bottom sites that were sampled by scuba between 1987 and 2021. The sites are from 38 locations on the north Pacific Rim ranging from Bering Island, along the Aleutian Island chain and the Alaska Peninsula to Southeast Alaska. At each site, divers counted and collected sea urchins from quadrats placed at random distances mostly along a 20-25-foot depth contour. At a subset of sites, 40-foot depths were targeted. Urchins were counted until either 20 quadrats were sampled or about 200 urchins were collected. Quadrat size is specified in the data table but was 0.25 m2 at almost all sites. Recent advances in hydroacoustic technology are proving to be valuable tools for mapping habitat features for sedentary biota such as freshwater mussels, and has the potential to identify and quantify habitat features. The Spectaclecase (Margaritifera monodonta) and Salamander (Simpsonaias ambigua) are imperiled mussels that are typically associated with rock structures (e.g., wing dams, revetment) in rivers. Hydroacoustic data were collected in early May of 2021 for 6 pre-determined sites containing rock structures within the St. Croix River, to determine whether hydroacoustics can identify and quantify habitat features for imperiled mussels such as the Spectaclecase and Salamander.

Between 1987 and 2021, over 600 nearshore rocky bottom sites were sampled by scuba at 38 locations on the north Pacific Rim ranging from Bering Island, along the Aleutian Island chain and the Alaska Peninsula to southeast Alaska. Sites were plotted at random from along the coasts of islands or areas designated. Hard substrate was targeted. Most sites were sampled more than once, years or decades apart. This dataset represents stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic information from tissue samples collected from diamondback terrapins, potential prey items, and vegetation from 6 salt marsh sites (4 mainland, 2 island) within a 30 km section of southern Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, USA. Red blood cells were collected from terrapins in 2011 (mature females), and whole blood samples were collected in 2015 and 2019 from mature males and females and immature females. Vegetation and invertebrates prey samples were collected within proximity of terrapin capture sites in 2015 and 2019.

The U.S. Geological Survey is monitoring concentrations of metals and other trace elements in water, streambed sediment, and aquatic invertebrates at 6 locations in the middle and lower portions of the mainstem Klamath River from below J.C. Boyle dam in Oregon to near the mouth on the northwestern coast of California. Included are 3 tributary monitoring sites, one each on the Scott, Salmon, and Trinity Rivers. This data release makes available major and minor trace element concentrations in surface water, bed sediment, and aquatic invertebrates collected in September 2018, and in bed sediment collected in September 2019.

In 1995, the Missouri River Benthic Fishes Study was initiated to provide improved information on Missouri River fish populations and how alterations might affect them. Missouri River Benthic Fishes Study (MRBFS) documented annual patterns, habitat, and water quality associations of 21 Missouri River benthic fish species based on relative abundance, including sicklefin and sturgeon chub from 1996 to 1998. Data sets include capture data and habitat characterization. The objective was to evaluate population structure and habitat use of benthic fishes along the entire mainstem Missouri River, exclusive of reservoirs.
