Quantitative assessments of high-resolution telemetry data reveal behavior and movement of bighead and silver carp are impacted by a carbon dioxide barrier in outdoor ponds
Resource managers need effective methods to limit the spread of invasive Asian carps (Hypophthalmichthys spp.) into new areas. This study evaluated carbon dioxide (CO2) as a barrier and deterrent to Asian carps in a small outdoor pond. Telemetered silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) were monitored for 72h (24h before CO2, 24h during CO2, 24h after CO2) using a two-dimensional acoustic telemetry array to evaluate behavioral responses to CO2. Water quality was measured concurrent with acoustic telemetry to determine the concentration and extent of the CO2 plume. Results are intended to provide information on the potential application of CO2 as an invasive fish deterrent...

To evaluate how bigheaded carps use a restored backwater habitat, their passages into and out of and residency within a backwater was monitored using acoustic telemetry. This dataset describes the results of this study and was used to compare activity of bigheaded carps between species, at a diel scale, among seasons, and how activity related of environmental conditions. Calculation of passages and residency are available in the thesis of Douglas Schultz (Southern Illinois University, 2006). http://fishdata.siu.edu/schultz.pdf

Acoustic deterrence of bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) to a broadband sound stimulus: Data
Recent studies have shown the potential of acoustic deterrents against invasive silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix). This study examined the phonotaxic response of the bighead carp (H. nobilis) to pure tones (500– 2000 Hz) and playbacks of broadband sound from an underwater recording of a 100 hp outboard motor (0.06–10 kHz) in an outdoor concrete pond (10 × 5 × 1.2 m) at the U.S. Geological Survey Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center in La Crosse, WI. The number of consecutive times the fish reacted to sound from alter- nating locations at each end of the pond was assessed. Bighead carp were relatively indifferent to the pure tones with median consecutive responses ranging from 0 to 2 reactions away...

Physiological and behavioral responses of bighead and silver carp to chemicals associated with common carp sex pheromones
This dataset contains a combination of physiological and behavioral approaches for characterizing the response of bighead and silver carp to potentially attractive chemicals associated with sex pheromones identified in common carp. The dataset contains eight tables: 1) EOG responses from untreated and masculinized silver carp to prostaglandins, 2) mixture discrimination indices of the prostaglandins tested with the EOG, 3) relative distribution (percentage) of initial behavioral/attractiveness tests of individual PGF’s to silver carp, 4) release rates of prostaglandin mixtures from PGF2α-implanted bigheaded carps, 5) relative distribution (percentage) of masculinized silver carp to PGF2α-implanted carp odors, 6)...

Evaluation of broadband sound as an acoustical deterrent to deter the movement of silver carp and bighead carp in an outside pond: Data
The effectiveness of an acoustic barrier to deter the movement of silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, and bighead carp, H. noblis, was evaluated. A pond (10 m, x 5 m x 1.2 m) was divided in half by a concrete-block barrier with a channel (1 m across) allowing fish access to each side. Underwater speakers were placed on each side of the barrier opening and an outboard motor noise (broadband sound; 0.06 – 10 kHz) was broadcast to repel carp that approached within 1 m of the channel. Broadband sound was effective at reducing the number of successful crossings in schools of silver carp, bighead carp and a combined school. Repulsion rates were 82.5% (silver carp), 93.7% (bighead carp) and 90.5% (combined). This...

Data for "Comparison of size, terminal fall velocity and density of bighead, silver, and grass carp eggs for use in drift modeling"
Invasive Asian carps established in the United States spawn in turbulent water of rivers and their eggs and early larvae develop while drifting in the current. The eggs are slightly denser than water and are held in suspension by water turbulence. The eggs are believed to perish if they settle before hatching. It is thus possible to use egg drift modeling to assess the capability of a river to support survival of Asian carp eggs. Data to populate such models include the physical properties of the assessed rivers, and information on egg size, density, and terminal fall velocity (sinking rates). Herein, we present the physical characteristics of the eggs as a function of post fertilization time. We recorded mean egg...

Auditory thresholds for bighead and silver carp after sound exposure determined by the AEP technique: Data
Invasive silver (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead (H. nobilis) carp, collectively referred to as bigheaded carps, threaten aquatic ecosystems of the Upper Midwestern United States. Due to extensive ecological impacts associated with these species, prevention of their further range expansion is the aim for fisheries management. Recent behavioral studies indicate bigheaded carps are deterred by acoustic barriers and exhibit negative phonotaxis in response to anthropogenic sound sources (≥ 150 dB re 1 μPa SPLrms). However, the impact of long-term exposure to these sounds on the hearing capabilities of bigheaded carps has not been well documented. In this study, the auditory evoked potential (AEP) technique...
