This dataset provides results for the following: (1) metals concentrations in soils surrounding breeding song bird nest sites; (2) metals concentrations in invertebrates (earthworm and grub composites) collected near nest sites; (3) metals concentrations and delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity in avian blood samples; and (4) metals concentrations, indicators of oxidative stress and DNA damage, and histopathology in liver and/or kidney tissues collected from breeding song birds.
This study evaluates biomarkers of mercury exposure among residents of Horlivka, a city in eastern Ukraine located in an area with geologic and industrial sources of environmental mercury, and residents of Artemivsk, a nearby comparison city outside the mercury-enriched area. Samples of urine, blood, hair, and nails were collected from study participants, and a questionnaire was administered to obtain data on age, gender, occupational history, smoking, alcohol consumption, fish consumption, tattoos, dental amalgams, home heating system, education, source of drinking water, and family employment in mines. Median biomarker mercury concentrations in Artemivsk were 0.26 μg/g-Cr (urine), 0.92 μg/L (blood), 0.42 μg/g...

Soil contamination by lead (Pb) from past small munitions training on Beale Air Force Base, California and Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida may result in adverse effects for passerine birds that utilize the locations. A study was conducted during 2016–17 at both Air Force Bases (AFB) to assess the risk of bird exposure to Pb. Two different methods were used to estimate exposure. The first was by analysis of blood and feather samples collected from birds captured on both AFBs, while the second was by food chain modeling using data on Pb concentrations in dietary items (invertebrates and seeds) collected from both AFB. Lead concentrations in blood and feathers for birds captured at Beale AFB indicate low exposure and...

Total mercury concentrations were determined in hair and whole blood of raccoons and skunks in Suisun Marsh from 2016 to 2019. Individual skunks and raccoons were identified by a unique identifier (Animal_ID) and some animals were sampled multiple times. This dataset includes animal sex, age class, the date the sample was collected, animal body mass, head length, and head-to-torso length. These data support the following publication: Peterson, Sarah H., Ackerman, J.T., Hartman, C.A., Casazza, M.L., Feldheim, C.L., and Herzog, M.P. 2020. Mercury exposure in mammalian mesopredators inhabiting a brackish marsh. Environmental Pollution
