This data set represents National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) National Trends Network average of annual precipitation-weighted mean atmospheric deposition for seven select constituents from years 1985-2014 compiled for two spatial components of the NHDPlus version 2 data suite (NHDPlusv2) for the conterminous United States; 1) individual reach catchments and 2) reach catchments accumulated upstream through the river network. The seven constiuents presented here are: Calcium, Nitrate, Sulfate, Inorganic Nitrogen, Magnesium, Ammonium, and Chloride. Units are kilograms per hectare. This dataset can be linked to the NHDPlus version 2 data suite by the unique identifier COMID. The source data was produced by...
The effects of a dilute (ionic strength = 5 × 10−3 M) plume of treated sewage, with elevated levels (3.9 mg/L) of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), upon the pH-dependency and magnitude of bacterial transport through an iron-laden, quartz sand aquifer (Cape Cod, MA) were evaluated using sets of replicate, static minicolumns. Compared with uncontaminated groundwater, the plume chemistry diminished bacterial attachment under mildly acidic (pH 5.0–6.5) in-situ conditions, in spite of the 5-fold increase in ionic strength and substantively enhanced attachment under more alkaline conditions. The effects of the hydrophobic neutral and total fractions of the plume DOC; modest concentrations of fulvic and humic acids (1.5...
During the two years from 24 May 1978 to 7 June 1980, the battery subsystem for the 100-kW peak photovoltaic power system for Natural Bridges National Monument was designed, modified, tested, installed, retested and again modified. The subsystem includes 224 lead-acid (with calcium alloy) cells, hydrogen recombiners, an air-lift pump system and electrolyte level indicators. Problems and solutions related to these subsystem components are discussed. Further details concerning the battery selection, design, tests and performance throughout the battery's life are also included. Published by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lincoln Laboratory, in 1981.

Phosphorus (P) efficiency (shoot dry weight at low P/shoot dry weight at high P) of a cultivar is the ability to produce a high yield in a soil that is limited in that element for a standard genotype. The large variation in P efficiency of different crops provides opportunities for screening crop species that perform well on low phosphorus soil. To explain the differences in P efficiency of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cultivars a glasshouse pot experiment was conducted by using P-deficient soil [0.5 M sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3)-extractable P 8.54 mg kg-1] treated with 0 (low P) and 100 mg P kg-1 soil (high P). The relationship between P efficiency and P, calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and manganese (Mn)...

Lead (Pb) and calcium (Ca) concentrations were measured in fillet samples of longear sunfish (Lepomis megalotis) and suckers (Catostomidae) collected in 2005‒12 from the Big River, which drains a historical mining area in southeastern Missouri, where a consumption advisory is in effect due to elevated Pb concentrations in fish. Regression analysis indicated that fillet Ca explained 75‒>99% of fillet Pb variation in mining-affected stream reaches. We used analysis-of-covariance to standardize Pb concentration to a common Ca concentration (415 ug/g wet weight), which reduced differences between taxa. Variation among sites and years also was reduced after Ca-normalization, as was the number of samples that exceeded...
Natural and anthropogenic changes in basin lake levels in the western U.S. expose saline, alkaline substrates that are commonly colonized by shrubs in the Chenopodiaceae. On a chronosequence of recently exposed substrates at Mono Lake, California, Sarcobatus vermiculatus has greatest biomass accrual, seed production, seedling establishment, and leaf N at younger sites where soils are extremely saline and alkaline. These field observations and an understanding of the role of N-containing compatible solutes in salinity tolerance of halophytes led to our prediction that Na and N interactions stimulate Sarcobatus performance. To test this, we grew Sarcobatus juveniles for 2 years in the greenhouse at 4 levels of NaCl...

Evaluations of non-nitrogen nutrient budgets in pasture systems are limited, and there needs to be greater knowledge of these budgets. Although most nutrient budget studies from grasslands have focused solely or primarily on N, maintenance of a proper nutrient balance is important to healthy plant growth and reduction of potential water quality problems. Budgets of non-nitrogen nutrients were studied in a rotational pasture system during two treatment periods, which received different levels of nitrogen (N) fertility. Rotationally grazed grass pastures in Ohio (USA) received 56 kg N ha−1 as NH4NO3 for a 5-year period and then 168 kg N ha−1 for a 10-year period. A topsoil pH of 6.0 and available P and K levels of...

This raster depicts the percentage of lithological calcium oxide (CaO) content in surface or near surface geology. We derived these rasters by calculating the average percent CaO content for each map unit in combined surficial-bedrock geologic maps. We used state geologic maps (Preliminary Integrated Geologic Map Databases for the United States, Open File Reports 2004-1355, 2005-1305, 2005-1323, 2005-1324, 2005-1325, 2005-1351, and 2006-1272), which depict surficial geology instead of bedrock when the surficial layers are sufficiently deep. For the state maps that do not incorporate surficial geology (i.e., midwestern states), we overlaid surficial geologic map units with thicknesses greater than 100 feet (from...
