Data on body condition and reproduction of Utah prairie dogs at 5 colonies on the Awapa Plateau, Utah, USA, June-August 2013-2016. Utah prairie dogs were live-trapped and sampled on 5 colonies. We recorded the age (juvenile/adult) and mass (nearest 5 grams) of each prairie dog and marked its ears and body with metal tags and passive integrated transponders, respectively, for permanent identification. We measured each prairie dog's right hind foot length (nearest millimeter). We indexed each adult prairie dog's body condition as the ratio between its mass and hind-foot length. Prairie dogs were allowed to recover from anesthesia and released at their trapping locations. We indexed prairie dog reproduction, by colony...

Intracoelomic implantation of electronic tags has become a common method in fishery research, but rarely are fish examined by scientists after release to understand the extent that surgical incisions have healed. Walleye (Sander vitreus) are a valuable, highly-exploited fishery resource in the Laurentian Great Lakes. Here, fishery capture of walleye with internal acoustic transmitters combined with a high reward program provided multiple opportunities to examine photographs and quantify the status of surgical incisions. Walleye (n=926) from reef and river spawning populations in Lake Erie and Lake Huron were implanted with acoustic transmitters during spring spawning events from 2011 to 2016. Incisions were closed...
From 2003-2018, USGS researchers and collaborators conducted mark-recapture studies of the boreal toad at the Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern Montana, USA. The datasets included here contain information on individual toad capture history, body size, and disease status. These data were collected annually over the 16-year period at up to 11 breeding sites per year on the refuge. We include datasets for (1) male toad captures over time, (2) female toad captures over time, (3) male disease status (tested - positive or negative, or not tested in a given year), (4) all toad length and weight data over time, and (5) male toad size and body condition over time.

This dataset contains the physical collection information (e.g., sample location, date, gear type) and microsatellite DNA genotype of egg and larval Lake Sturgeon collected in the St. Clair and Detroit rivers in 2015 and 2016. Individuals were genotyped for 18 microsatellite loci (13 disomic and 5 polysomic). Alleles (base pair sizes) were recorded as presence absence scores (1:present, 2:absent, 0:missing data) for all previously observed alleles. Thus individual genotypes were recorded as pseudo diploid dominant phenotypes resulting in individual vectors of length n=205 for each genotyped egg or larval individual.

The Coastal Cactus Wren is a species of high conservation concern in southern California. The goal of this project was to obtain taxonomic resolution of subspecies boundaries between coastal and desert populations of Cactus Wrens. We collected genetic samples from Cactus Wrens at California desert sites and combined this dataset with previously collected samples from coastal populations to resolve the distribution of subspecies and to determine distinct genetic lineages, gene flow, genetic diversity and effective population size of desert populations. Understanding these relationships will assist managers with development and implementation of a conservation and management strategy that could aim to avoid state...

Predation and habitat degradation by non-native species are principal terrestrial threats to the federally endangered Hawaiian Petrel (ʻuaʻu, Pterodroma sandwichensis) and Hawaiian Goose (nēnē, Branta sandvicensis) within Haleakalā National Park (HALE), Maui, Hawaiʻi. Since 1981, HALE has maintained a network of live-traps to control invasive mammalian predators and protect these endangered birds. To continue evaluations of trapping efficiency in HALE, we analyzed 2000 - 2014 trap events. Trap events were divided up into six event types classified into three event categories: no event, other event [bait lost, or trap triggered], or predator event [rat, cat, or mongoose caught]. Event type analysis was divided up...

Genetic samples in the form of a small blood sample were collected from 263 Bell’s vireos (Vireo bellii) in drainages throughout southern and central California, Arizona, southern Nevada, and southwestern Utah. We used population genomic techniques to delineate the range limit between the Least Bell’s Vireo (V. b. pusillus) and its conspecific geographical neighbor, the Arizona Bell’s Vireo (V. b. arizonae). This study provides a taxonomic classification of individuals sampled where the two subspecies meet. Moreover, it allows an estimate of genetic diversity and trends in both taxa, estimates sources and levels of dispersal and gene flow among drainages, and allows us to assess progress of recovery and effectiveness...
Argentine Giant Tegu lizard (Salvator merianae) trap effort and count data collected in southern Georgia, USA in 2019. Non-target species associated with the traps were also documented, as were type of bait used and condition of the traps during trap checks.

Mean flea counts from prairie dogs and their burrows in Utah (2000), New Mexico (2010–2012), and Montana (2016, 2019). Prairie dogs were live-trapped, anesthetized with isoflurane, and combed thoroughly for 30 or 45 seconds to remove and count fleas. Prairie dogs were allowed to recover from anesthesia and released at their trapping locations. Randomly selected prairie dog burrows were swabbed for fleas using a plumber’s snake to insert a white flannel-cloth as deep as possible into each tunnel; the cable was shook ~30 seconds, and the cloth was removed from the burrow and quickly sealed in a re-sealable zipper storage bag. Fleas were later removed from swabs and counted. Mean flea counts were calculated for each...

Invasive Argentine Black and White Tegu lizards (Salvator merianae) are trapped with chicken eggs when populations are discovered in the United States. Unfortunately, non-targeted mammals are trapped in tegu lizard traps which reduces trap efficacy. We evaluated if non-target mammal captures could be reduced by coating the chicken eggs with a known irritant to mammals (capsaicin) while maintaining a highly desired bait for tegu lizards. The data set quantifies trap disturbance by non-targets species and efficacy of capsaicin coated eggs as bait in live traps set for Argentine Black and White Tegu lizards (Salvatore merianae). The dataset consists of three live trapping experiments to test if 1) trap disturbance...

Over a 22-week period both with and without active Brown Treesnake (BTS) snake removal, we evaluated snake-trap contact rates at mouse- and bird-lure traps within the Guam National Wildlife Refuge in 2014. Bird-lure traps served as a proxy for reintroduced nesting birds. Data consists of 3 files generated from camera surveillance and trapping using mouse and bird lures in conventional snake traps on a 6 x 18 trapping grid. Trap survey effort contains summary results for a set of traps on a single occasion. Mark release data consist of individual capture records of trapped snakes. Camera transcription consist of animals detected via motion and time-lapsed photography at traps using bird lures.
