Inland fishes provide important ecosystem services to communities worldwide and are especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Fish respond to climate change in diverse and nuanced ways which creates challenges for practitioners of fish conservation, climate change adaptation, and management. Although climate change is known to affect fish globally, a comprehensive online, public database of how climate change has impacted inland fishes worldwide and adaptation or management practices that may address these impacts does not exist. We conducted an extensive, systematic primary literature review to identify peer-reviewed journal publications describing projected and documented examples of climate change...
This shapefile represents The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) “essential forests” and “key connectors” in the Central Appalachians Whole System. Essential Forests are built around groups of large forest patches, ecoregional portfolio roll-up sites, and areas with high local integrity and high flow density (from M. Anderson’s resiliency analysis). Key Connectors provide physical linkages among essential forests, have high flow density, and may also include large forest patches and matrix blocks. The polygons were originally delineated by TNC staff at a workshop near Petersburg, West Virginia, on March 9 and 10, 2011. The boundaries were hand-drawn on paper maps and then hand-digitized by A. Watland (TNC-VA) and T. Gagnolet...
The central objective of this project was to answer two questions: 1) how downscaled climate datasets, modeled vegetation changes, and information on estimated species sensitivities can be used to develop climate change adaptation strategies, and 2) how model results and datasets can be made more useful for informing the management of species and landscapes. To answer these questions, we identified enthusiastic partners working in two very different complex landscapes within the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NPLCC): 1) the British Columbia Park system, specifically the midcoast region, and 2) the National Wildlife Refuge system in the Willamette Valley, OR. The issues and concerns of each group...

The Quartz Valley Indian Reservation will partner with tribes, federal agencies and higher education institutions in the Klamath Basin on a tribal youth intern program for the summer of 2014. This program will build on current efforts to integrate western science and TEK for climate change planning and adaptation in the Klamath Basin.

Climate change vulnerability assessments are commonly used to identify species or populations at risk from global climate change, but few translate impact assessments to climate change adaptation actions. Furthermore, most climate change adaptation efforts emphasize where to implement management actions, whereas timing remains largely overlooked. The rate of modern climate change introduces urgency in evaluating whether delaying conservation actions compromises their efficacy for reaching important conservation targets. We evaluated the importance of multiple climate change adaptation strategies including timing of actions on preventing extinctions for a threatened climate-sensitive species, the Eastern Massasauga...
The Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center (ACRC) held a symposium titled “Coastal Temperate Rainforests: Integrating Science, Resource Management, and Communities” on April 17‐19, 2012, in Juneau, Alaska. The three day event included an all‐day field trip to Berner’s Bay (north of Juneau), an international plenary, three concurrent sessions, two lunch‐time keynote speakers, an evening open public reception, an evening science social, and an evening banquet. The list of speakers may be found in the attached program, or at http://acrc.alaska.edu. To highlight a few of the keynotes speakers, Dr. Peter Kareiva (The Nature Conservancy) spoke at the opening public reception and the banquet, Dr. Kirk Johnson (Denver Museum of...

We developed an expert opinion questionnaire to gather information regarding expert opinion regarding the importance of climate variables in determining a species geographic range (Brandt et al. 2017). The data on the Survey_Results tab represent the raw survey questions and responses. Each column in the spreadsheet (except the first four columns, described below) represents a survey question, which is written in the first cell of that column. Each survey response for that question is listed below. Some questions have multi-part answers, and are listed in multiple columns, and appended with letters (e.g., Q8A, Q8B, Q8C, etc.). The first four columns of the spreadhseet represent unique information for that survey...

A compilation and content analysis of gray literature (e.g., shoreline management plans, climate change strategy documents) from the Pacific Northwest - Washington, Oregon, northern California -written between 1993-2016, and categorized as to the ways in which climate adaptation actions related to sea level rise appear in these documents.
The Washington Connected Landscapes Project is a highly leveraged effort to provide scientific analyses and tools necessary to conserve wildlife habitat connectivity. In support of the project, we 1) developed tools necessary to reliably identify and prioritize areas important for connectivity conservation and restoration under current conditions and for allowing species range shifts under climate change; 2) tested and refined these tools by applying them in a Great Northern LCC (GNLCC)-funded effort to identify essential habitats and linkages for the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion where the WHCWG is currently engaged (connectivity and climate tools) and across Washington State (climate tools); and 3) released these...

Summary The impact of climate change on cold-water ecosystems—and the cold-adapted native salmonids present in these systems—is the subject of a substantial body of research.. Recently, scientists have developed a number of datasets and analyses that provide insight into projections of climate change effects on native salmonid populations in the northern U.S. Rockies region. Alongside this research, a number of management options for helping native salmonids respond to the effects of climate change—also known as ‘climate adaptation’ strategies and actions—have been identified by scientists and managers in the region. These analyses and climate adaptation options offer valuable information to managers charged with...

Worldwide, many species are responding to ongoing climate change with shifts in distribution, abundance, phenology, or behavior. Consequently, natural-resource managers face increasingly urgent conservation questions related to biodiversity loss, expansion of invasive species, and deteriorating ecosystem services. We argue that our ability to address these questions is hampered by the lack of explicit consideration of species’ adaptive capacity (AC). AC is the ability of a species or population to cope with climatic changes and is characterized by three fundamental components: phenotypic plasticity, dispersal ability, and genetic diversity. However, few studies simultaneously address all elements; often, AC is confused...

EARTH SCIENCE > LAND SURFACE > LANDSCAPE,
This report provides a first-ever compilation of what is known—and not known—about climate change effects on marine and coastal ecosystems in the geographic extent of the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NPLCC). The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service funded this report to help inform members of the newly established NPLCC as they assess priorities and begin operations. Production of this report was guided by University of Washington’s Climate Impacts Group and information was drawn from more than 250 documents and more than 100 interviews. Information in this report focuses on the NPLCC region, which extends from Kenai Peninsula in southcentral Alaska to Bodega Bay in northern California west of the Cascade...

This report provides a compilation of what is known – and not known – about climate change effects on terrestrial ecosystems in the geographic extent of the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NPLCC). Where a broader regional context is needed, we also present information from surrounding areas. The NPLCC funded this report to help inform members of the NPLCC as they assess priorities and continue operations.
