This short-term project responded to concerns about the disappearance of culturally important plants in traditional gathering areas expressed by elders of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe (PGST) (Olympic Peninsula, WA), both currently and in response to continuing climate change. A formal Memorandum of Understanding was developed between Oregon State University and the PGST to guide this culturally sensitive research. We recommend this formal approach to researchers considering tribal partnerships in order to ensure expectations of all parties are clearly outlined. This project facilitated the engagement of the North Central Climate Adaptation Science Center’s (NC CASC) Climate Foundational Science Area (FSA) to identify and address the physical climate science challenges that are important for ecologists and natural resource managers in the NC CASC region, as well as meet their needs for climate information to assess impacts to their desired system and develop strategies for effective climate adaptation. The Integrated Scenarios (IS) of the Future Northwest Environment project resulted in several datasets describing projected changes in climate, hydrology and vegetation for the 21st century over the Northwestern US. At the conclusion of the IS project in August 2014, it was recognized that many data users would be challenged to use the IS data due to 1) the sheer size of these datasets (~ 20 Terabytes of data), 2) the specific file format (netCDF) of the IS data, and 3) the unfamiliarity of appropriate methods for analyzing climate scenarios.
