The goal of this project is to create critically needed coastal fog datasets. Anticipated products from the collaboration between on-the-ground natural resource managers and a multidisciplinary coalition of physical scientists are: 1) a compilation of existing fog related data from multiple sources: satellite (AVHRR, GOES, Modis, Landsat), NOAA buoy , and airport and meteorological stations, 2) USGS Open File report documenting the results of a multiday working session with climatologists, remote sensing specialists, fog modelers, statisticians, and natural resource managers, convened to review the data, examine and assess the correlations between data streams and models, specify initial parameters to be extracted...

This part of the data release presents a shapefile that includes a spatial index of orthoimagery and elevation data describing the Alaskan coastline from Icy Cape to Cape Prince of Wales. The data products referenced in this index include orthoimagery, digital surface models, and elevation point clouds which were generated from aerial imagery using structure-from-motion methods. Fairbanks Fodar, a contracted mapping service, collected the aerial imagery in 2016 and created all of the data products referenced here. Due to the enormous extent of this dataset, the products are split into separate files with more manageable sizes. Each polygon in this shapefile index provides a geographic outline of a data file’s coverage,...

Due to the great differences in knowledge and availability of information on the biodiversity of the different marine regions from Mexico, it was decided to use the opinion of experts for the identification of the high-priority sites for the conservation of the marine biodiversity that includes coasts, the oceans and islands. For this aim, an experts workshop was conducted in October 2005 to determine the marine and coastal high-priority sites for conservation in Mexico. The workshop was organized by CONABIO, CONANP, Pronatura and TNC. After the workshop, the resulting sites were delimited and validated by means of an internet Wiki site, which served like a vestibule for the exchange of information and opinions...

This point shapefile approximates locations within 20 km of the North Pacific Coastline, as defined by the "World Country Boundaries (Generalized)" shapefile distributed by ESRI as part of their Data & Maps data series. They are based on raster data at 4 km resolution. Therefore there are between 3-5 points extending out from each location along the shoreline (at 4 km intervals).
Includes: Coastal Habitat, Coastal Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS), Shoreline Units - represents a parsing tool to help compare and contrast geographies with the understanding that boundary changes, or splitting/lumping of areas may be desirable when developing conservation approaches at more localized geographies, Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) - provides insight into the relative potential of coastal change due to future sea-level rise, and Eelgrass.
Three types of data (one with an elevation model (DEM), one without a DEM, and one indicating the difference) are provided for the entire Northeast region and by analysis zone (n=8). Tidal Marsh Vegetation Classification, DEM, 3m, Northeast U.S. – contains a regional classification produced using a combination of Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) multispectral imagery. All eight cover types are included in this classification. This dataset combined with “Tidal Marsh Vegetation Classification, DEM, 3m, Northeast U.S” provides a contiguous classification of tidal marsh cover types from coastal Maine to Virginia. The eight cover types include: High marsh: Area flooded during...

The GIS shapefile "Range extent of southern sea otters 2017" is a simple polyline representing the geographic distribution of the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) in mainland California, based on data collected during the spring 2017 range-wide census. The USGS range-wide sea otter census has been undertaken twice a year since 1982, once in May and once in October, using consistent methodology involving both ground-based and aerial-based counts. The spring census is considered more accurate than the fall count, and provides the primary basis for gauging population trends by State and Federal management agencies. Sea otter distribution in California (the mainland range) is considered to comprise a band...

Geophysical and geological survey data were collected off Town Neck Beach in Sandwich, Massachusetts, in May and July 2016. Approximately 130 linear kilometers of subbottom (seismic-reflection) and 234-kilohertz interferometric sonar (bathymetric and backscatter) data were collected along with sediment samples, sea floor photographs, and (or) video at 26 sites within the geophysical survey area. Sediment grab samples were collected at 19 of the 26 sampling sites and video and (or) photographic imagery of the sea floor were taken at all 26 sites. These survey data are used to characterize the sea floor by identifying sediment-texture, seabed morphology, and underlying geologic structure and stratigraphy. Data collected...

The GIS layer "Census_sum_15" provides a standardized tool for examining spatial patterns in abundance and demographic trends of the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis), based on data collected during the spring 2015 range-wide census. This Shape file includes a series of summary statistics derived from the raw census data, including sea otter density...

A polygon dataset representing the open lake - offshore environmental zone within the Lake Erie Basin. The zone is defined by water depth of more than 15 meters, queried from the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center bathymetry data. This data was developed in conjuction with the Lake Erie Millinium Network www.lemn.org .
The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data of the nearshore region of the North Pacific show temperature ranges in degrees C using points whose locations correspond to the centroids of AVHRR Pathfinder version 5 monthly, global, 4 km data set (PFSST V50). The pathfinder rasters are available from the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC), hosted by NASA JPL. The data points in this dataset lie within a 20 km buffer from the GSHHS (Global Self-consistent, Hierarchical, High-resolution Shoreline) coastline. The GSHHS vector data are available from the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC). Furthermore, each point in the SST dataset is categorized by the ecoregion in which it is located. This...

These datasets are part of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project. Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. The data depict the relative resilience or vulnerability of every coastal site to six possible scenarios of sea level rise (1 to 6 feet). Other data from this project are available in the Nature’s Network gallery: https://nalcc.databasin.org/galleries/8f4dfe780c444634a45ee4acc930a055. Resilience Z-score, Condition Z-score, Physical Z-score and Shoreline units of the Northeast U.S. We evaluated the coastal region of nine Northeast and Mid-Atlantic...

This part of the data release presents digital elevation models (DEMs) spanning the ocean shoreline of Alaska from Icy Cape to Cape Prince of Wales. Aerial images were collected, and data were processed, by Fairbanks Fodar (https://www.fairbanksfodar.com) in Fairbanks, Alaska, for the U.S. Geological Survey. The aerial images, from which the DEMs were created, were collected in 2016 between August 29 and September 4 and extend from the shoreline to 400-4000 meters inland. The aerial images were collected with precise Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation data from a manned aircraft and were then processed into DEMs photogrammetrically using structure-from-motion (SFM) processing methods as described in Nolan...

The spring 2015 mainland sea otter count began on 2 May and wasn’t completed until 2 July. The delay in finishing the census was due primarily to limited availability of the survey plane (because of the need for the plane during the oil spill in the Refugio State Beach area). Overall viewing conditions this year were more favorable than those during the 2014 spring census (View Score = 2.6 vs. 2.3, where 0=poor, 1=fair, 2=good, 3=very good, and 4=excellent). The surface canopies of kelp (Macrocystis sp.) were considered by most participants to be about normal for this time of year. Sea otters along the mainland were surveyed (using a combination of ground-based and aerial-based surveys) from Pillar Point...
