This dataset summarizes impairment status for HUC12 watersheds at the CONUS scale using the EPA publicly available Assessment, Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Tracking and Implementation System (ATTAINS) geospatial package and the USGS Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD). ATTAINS is an online system maintained by the EPA containing information about the condition of the Nation’s surface waters, as reported by individual states. These data were downloaded in October 2023 and primarily reflect 2022 stream conditions. Because of the varying data types that exist in the database, an independent methodology was developed for summarizing impairment status for HUC12 watersheds using the USGS WBD as detailed in this metadata...

Leavenworth Creek, a tributary of South Clear Creek and Clear Creek near Georgetown, Colorado contains copper, lead, and zinc concentrations that are near to or exceed aquatic life standards. The creek drains the Argentine mining district where mining was active primarily in the early 1900s. In the summer of 2012, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) conducted a metal-loading study using tracer dilution and spatially detailed synoptic sampling to assess the location and magnitude of copper, lead, manganese, and zinc sources to Leavenworth Creek. Sodium bromide solution was injected into the stream to facilitate calculation of stream discharge at all stream sites using the principles of tracer dilution. Consequently,...

This dataset describes the quantity and morphology of microplastics in water, sediment, fish, and mussel samples from the Delaware River and select tributaries, including portions of the Upper Delaware Scenic & Recreational River, Middle Delaware National Scenic River, Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, and Lower Delaware Scenic & Recreational River. Water and sediment samples were collected at nine locations, from Callicoon, New York, at the upstream end, to Burlington, New Jersey, at the downstream end. Smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu), white sucker (Catostomus commersonii), and eastern elliptio (Elliptio complanata) were sampled at a subset of locations to assess biological uptake of microplastics....

More than 160 Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) congeners were analyzed in 21 fish-tissue samples and in one reference material sample. Dioxins and Furans were analyzed in 5 fish-tissue samples and in a second reference material sample. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), organochlorine and other persistent organic...

This Sediment Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the sediments sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), sediment collections were a composite of at least five randomly selected samples collected from each site. Per an internal summary report, sediment samples were collected using a stainless steel Eckman dredge. Analytical methods and QA/QC were directed by the Patuxent Analytical Control Facility (PACF) of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Per Dora Passino-Reader, the Geochemical & Environmental Research Group at Texas A&M University, College Station performed the analytical chemistry...

Clean water is important for a variety of uses, including drinking, recreation, and as habitat for aquatic species. Nonpoint-source pollution, such as nutrients, sediment, and pesticides from agricultural runoff, is a major cause of impaired water quality in the United States . Vegetation and soil in natural land cover help to remove pollutants from runoff water before it reaches streams and other waterways by slowing water flow and physically trapping sediment. To assess the spatial distribution of water purification potential in the southeastern United States, we mapped the demand for purification as the total area of agricultural land and the supply of natural land cover in the flowpath over which water moves...
Water-borne polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were sampled in three tributaries of the Niagara River Area of Concern (AOC) in 2018 and 2019 using semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs). This data set is a compilation of data from two sampling efforts, focused on determining the presence and distribution of total and congener PCBs in these tributaries.
Dust suppressants and soil stabilizer products are applied to unpaved roads worldwide to reduce dust production and stabilize road surfaces. Although these products may enter roadside surface water through runoff or leaching, little information is available on environmental fate or aquatic toxicity. The data reported here include the acute toxicity of 27 dust suppressant/soil stabilizer products to juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and the acute toxicity of selected products to fatmucket mussels (Lampsilis siliquoidea), virile crayfish (Faxonius virilis), pond snails (Lymnaea stagnalis), and larval gray treefrogs (Dryophytes versicolor). Selected products were also tested after exposure to simulated weathering...
