The Critical Minerals in Archived Mine Samples Database (CMDB) contains chemistry and geologic information for historic ore and ore-related rock samples from mineral deposits in the United States. In addition, the database contains samples from archetypal deposits from 27 other countries in North America, South America, Asia, Africa and Europe. GeoTIFF grids of national-scale magnetic anomaly data for the conterminous United States (Ravat and others, 2009), Alaska (Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys, 2016) and Canada (Miles and Oneschuk, 2016) were merged to create a composite residual magnetic anomaly grid of the United States and Canada. Miesch was an early contributor to USGS geochemistry research and many of these samples are associated with his research. In 1953 Dr. Miesch began a 33-year career with the Survey. His work in Grand Junction, CO involved research on the distribution of minor elements in association with uranium on the Colorado Plateau. A derivative product called a 'shape index' was calculated from satellite gravity data acquired from the gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite mission. The satellite data were processed to emphasize mass-surplus (dome-like) and -deficit (bowl-like) anomalies described in Ebbing and others (2018). This collection consists of rock samples associated with the research of USGS scientist Paul Schmidt. This collection contains one pallet of geological samples, books and papers. Schmidt was a geologist, employed by the U.S. Geological Survey and worked from 1963 to 1984 at the Denver Federal Center. From 1984 to 1994 he worked at the U.S. Geological Survey Mission in Saudi Arabia. He retired in 1995.

The Trans-Pecos region of West Texas and Southern New Mexico contains a series of rare earth element (REE) enriched ~ 34-36 Ma intrusive rhyolites and syenites. One such intrusive in the Sierra Blanca Mountains, Texas, hosts the Round Top REE deposit which is one of the few REE deposits in the U.S. with an economic evaluation and is scheduled to go into production in 2025. In addition, Alkaline igneous rocks in the Cornudas and Hueco Mountains, both within the Trans-Pecos area, also show high concentration of REEs and other critical elements.
