These data were compiled to explore the foraging ecology of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in the Colorado River, Grand Canyon, Arizona. These data represent samples characterizing the availability of drifting invertebrate prey (hereafter, drift) and use of these invertebrate prey by rainbow trout determined by gut samples (hereafter, diets). Drift and diet sampling occurred in five distinct reaches downstream of Glen Canyon Dam (river kilometer (rkm) from the dam): (I) rkm 16.3-21.7; (II) rkm 52.8-58.3; (III) rkm 86.6-91.9; (IV) rkm 122.0-123.6; and (V) rkm 127.1-129.6. Samples were taken on 12 trips in April, July, September and January from April 2012 through January 2015. The aquatic prey base consists...

Habitat use, diet, prey availability and foraging ecology of the endangered Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus semotus, Vespertilionidae), was examined in the east Maui region inclusive of the Waihou Mitigation Area, Pu‘u Makua Restoration Area and the wind power facility operated by Auwahi Wind Energy, LLC. The study was conducted to inform the mitigation and management requirements of Auwahi Wind Energy, research funding was provided by Auwahi Wind Energy, LLC (Auwahi Wind) to fulfill requirements for mitigating bat fatalities under its approved incidental take permit. This study included the first genetic analysis of Hawaiian hoary bat diet items, and broadly confirms the major arthropod orders (Coleoptera,...

The study was conducted to inform the mitigation and management requirements of Auwahi Wind Energy, and fulfill requirements for mitigating bat fatalities under its approved incidental take permit. Acoustic monitoring over the three-year period demonstrated that bats are present and actively feed year-round at the Waihou Mitigation Area. This study included the first genetic analysis of Hawaiian hoary bat...

We investigated the summer diets of feral burros (Equus asinus) in two ecosystems in which they are found in the United States: a subtropical desert in Arizona (Lake Pleasant Herd Management Area; HMA) and a temperate juniper shrubland in Utah (Sinbad HMA). In June and July of 2019, we gathered 50 burro fecal samples randomly from each location and used plant DNA metabarcoding to determine the burros’ diets. This dataset includes two.csv files: Burro_diet_AZ_UT_JuneJuly_2019_genera.csv - data showing the diet of burros at Lake Pleasant, AZ and Sinbad, UT HMAs by percent of genera detected. Burro_diet_AZ_UT_JuneJuly_2019_species.csv - data showing the diet of burros at Lake Pleasant, AZ and Sinbad, UT HMAs by percent...

Research funding to study bat ecology was provided by Auwahi Wind, LLC, in order to fulfill requirements for mitigating bat fatalities under its approved incidental take permit. This study included the first genetic analysis of Hawaiian hoary bat guano items, and broadly confirms the major arthropod orders (Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, and Blattodea) found in previous microscopy-based studies...

This tabular data set contains information about the diets of double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) collected from Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron during April-September 2013 and 2014. Diet items were identified, enumerated, and measured.

This tabular data set contains information about the diets of angler-caught Lake Trout (Salvelinus namaycush), Walleye (Sander vitreus), Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), Coho Salmon (O. kisutch), Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar), Steelhead (O. mykiss), Pink Salmon (O. gorbuscha), and Brown Trout (Salmo trutta) captured between April and October of 2017 and 2018 from U.S. waters of Lake Huron. Diet items were identified to lowest taxa, enumerated, measured, and prey biomass determined.

The role of disease in freshwater mussel declines has been largely ignored due to the lack of appropriate diagnostic tools and metabolomic markers of stress. Mussels in this study were either fed a prepared diet or unfed and their condition was assessed with the observed changes in fatty acid content of their tissue. This dataset contains quantitative fatty acid data from nonlethal (biopsy) sampling of foot tissue. These data may provide biomarkers indicative of freshwater mussel’s metabolic status.
