We revised distribution maps of potential presettlement habitat and current populations for Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and Gunnison Sage-Grouse (C. minimus) in North America. The revised map of potential presettlement habitat included some areas omitted from previously published maps such as the San Luis Valley of Colorado and Jackson area of Wyoming. Areas excluded from the revised maps were those dominated by barren, alpine, and forest habitats. The resulting presettlement distribution of potential habitat for Greater Sage-Grouse encompassed 1 200 483 km(2), With the species' current range 668 412 km(2). The distribution of potential Gunnison Sage-Grouse habitat encompassed 46 521 km(2), with...
Habitat selection studies can make important contributions to habitat prioritization efforts for species of conservation concern. We present a large-scale collaborative effort to develop habitat selection models for Greater Sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) across large landscapes (Wyoming, USA) and multiple seasons. Greater Sage-grouse are limited to western semi-arid landscapes in North America, range-wide population declines have been documented, and the species is currently listed a “warranted but precluded” from listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Wyoming is predicted to remain a stronghold for Sage-grouse populations and contains approximately 37% of the remaining birds. We developed Resource...

This metadata references the polygonal ARC/INFO GIS cover showing the current and historic distribution of potential habitat, or range, of the Greater Sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and Gunnison Sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus) in Western North America. This data was initially researched and compiled by Dr. Michael A. Schroeder, research biologist for the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. The initial draft of current and historic range data was mapped and submitted to state, federal, or provincial natural resource agencies and other experts for review, comment, and editing. The final product represents the best available science and expert review available at the time of compilation. ...

The source of this coverage data set is the fish biodiversity maps created for The Nature Conservancy (TNC) as part of their Hexagon Project. Professor Peter Moyle and his graduate student, Paul Randall, of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation Biology at the University of California, Davis were hired to produce range maps for all known fish species that presently occur in California. Each coverage denotes a separate fish species (refer to the species coverage key below). The polygons are estimated to be accurate at a scale of roughly 1:1,000,000. Other California fish species distributions can be found in a gallery at: http://app.databasin.org/app/pages/galleryPage.jsp?id=099b47b7394f47b6b42764829e8a8f09

TurkeyWinterRange is an ESRI SDE Feature Class showing the overall range for Wild Turkey (Melagris gallopavo) in Colorado. Winter Range is defined as that part of the overall range where 90% of the individuals are located from November 1 to April 1 during the average five winters out of ten. This information was derived from field personnel. A variety of data capture techniques were used including drawing on mylar overlays at 1:50,000 scale USGS county mapsheets and implementation of the SmartBoard Interactive Whiteboard using stand-up, real-time digitizing at various scales (Cowardin, M., M. Flenner. March 2003. Maximizing Mapping Resources. GeoWorld 16(3):32-35). Dataset was acquired from a third party distributor...

PronghornWinterConcentrationArea is an ESRI SDE Feature Class showing Winter Concentration Areas of Pronghorn Antelope. Winter Concentration Area is defined as that part of the winter range where animal densities are at least 200% greater than the surrounding winter range density during the same period used to define winter range in the average five winters out of ten. PronghornResidentPopulationArea is an ESRI SDE Feature Classshowing Resident Population Area, An area that provides year round range for a population of pronghorns. The resident animals use all of the area all year long, it cannot be subdivided into seasonal ranges. A resident population may be found within the overall range of a larger, migratory population.
