We collected detailed spatial data on the density and size distribution of intertidal snails as part of a broader effort to understand food webs in California estuaries. The survey area was Carpinteria Salt Marsh, California USA, which comprises 9 Ha tidal channels, 2 Ha salt flats, 17 Ha upland habitat, 6 Ha tidal pans, 52 Ha vegetated marsh, 2 Ha tidal flats. Using nearly 4,000 transects in potential snail habitat, we mapped snails throughout the estuary. Specifically, we systematically placed transects at intervals stratified within targeted habitat types: channels, pans, or marsh (or planar habitat that was mixed marsh and pan). At a quarter of the quadrats, we also estimated snail size-frequency distributions....

This dataset represents an archived record of annual California sea otter surveys from 1985-2014. Survey procedures involve counting animals during the "spring survey" -- generally beginning in late April or early May and usually ending in late May early June but may extend into early July, depending on weather conditions. Annual surveys are organized by survey year and within each year, three shapefiles are included: census summary of southern sea otter, extra limit counts of southern sea otter, and range extent of southern sea otter. The surveys, conducted cooperatively by scientists of the U.S. Geological Survey, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Monterey Bay Aquarium...

FY2011Research is showing that populations of wintering raptors, including Northern Harriers, Rough-Legged Hawks, Prairie Falcons, American Kestrels. Red-Tailed Hawks and Golden Eagles, have stayed relatively constant in the last 20 years are being used by the Bureau of Land Management and Idaho Army National Guard in developing raptor conservation management practices. The American Wind and WildlifeInstitute will also use the results for their wind energy siting support tools.

GPChickenHistoricRange is an ESRI SDE Feature Class showing Colorado greater prairie chicken distribution. Maps are derived from records of lekking sites for greater prairie chickens. Leks may be classified as active, inactive or lek of unknown status. Classification is usually based on knowledge of population fluctuations and/or male attendance; leks are considered to identify important seasonal activity areas nearby. GPChickenHistoricRange is an ESRI shapefile showing areas where greater prairie chickens have been known to occur prior to 1955 (taken from Aldrich and Duvall, 1955). This information was derived from field personnel. A variety of data capture techniques were used including drawing on mylar overlays...

The source of this coverage data set is the fish biodiversity maps created for The Nature Conservancy (TNC) as part of their Hexagon Project. Professor Peter Moyle and his graduate student, Paul Randall, of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation Biology at the University of California, Davis were hired to produce range maps for all known fish species that presently occur in California. Each coverage denotes a separate fish species (refer to the species coverage key below). The polygons are estimated to be accurate at a scale of roughly 1:1,000,000. Other California fish species distributions can be found in a gallery at: http://app.databasin.org/app/pages/galleryPage.jsp?id=099b47b7394f47b6b42764829e8a8f09

PronghornOverallRange is an ESRI SDE Feature Class showing Overall Range, The area which encompasses all known seasonal activity areas within the observed range of a population of pronghorn antelope. This information was derived from field personnel. A variety of data capture techniques were used including drawing on mylar overlays at 1:50,000 scale USGS county mapsheets and implementation of the SmartBoard Interactive Whiteboard using stand-up, real-time digitizing at various scales (Cowardin, M., M. Flenner. March 2003. Maximizing Mapping Resources. GeoWorld 16(3):32-35). Dataset was acquired from a third party distributor who obtained it from CDOW in January 2011. The authoritative data source is available...

MooseConcentrationArea is an ESRI SDE Feature Class showing that part of the range of a species where densities are 200% higher than the surrounding area during a specific season. This information was derived from field personnel. This metadata references the polygonal ARC/INFO GIS cover showing the current and historic distribution of potential habitat, or range, of the Greater Sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and Gunnison Sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus) in Western North America. This data was initially researched and compiled by Dr. Michael A. Schroeder, research biologist for the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. The initial draft of current and historic range data was mapped and submitted to state, federal, or provincial natural resource agencies and other experts for review, comment, and editing. The final product represents the best available science and expert review available at the time of compilation. ...

This dataset represents presence of white pine (Pinus strobus) at year 100 (2095) from a single model run of LANDIS-II. The simulation assumed Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) B2 emissions (moderate) and used the Hadley 3 global circulation model. Contemporary harvest rates and intensities were simulated.

MtnGoatMineralLick is an ESRI SDE Feature Class showing sites of Mineral Licks used by Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus) in Colorado. Mineral Licks are defined as specific natural sites known to be utilized as lick areas by Mountain Goats. The spring 2017 mainland sea otter count began on April 30, and although the shore-based counts were completed by May 12, 2017, the aerial counts were not completed until July 12, 2017. Overall viewing conditions this year were good, although not as good as conditions experienced during the 2016 spring census (View Score 2.4 versus 3.1, where 0=poor, 1=fair, 2=good, 3=very good, and 4=excellent). The surface canopies of kelp (Macrocystis sp.) were considered by most participants to be considerably below normal for this time of year in most areas of the mainland range. Sea otters along the mainland coast were surveyed from Pillar Point in San Mateo County in the north to Rincon Point in the south at the Santa Barbara/Ventura...
Habitat selection studies can make important contributions to habitat prioritization efforts for species of conservation concern. We present a large-scale collaborative effort to develop habitat selection models for Greater Sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) across large landscapes (Wyoming, USA) and multiple seasons. Greater Sage-grouse are limited to western semi-arid landscapes in North America, range-wide population declines have been documented, and the species is currently listed a “warranted but precluded” from listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Wyoming is predicted to remain a stronghold for Sage-grouse populations and contains approximately 37% of the remaining birds. We developed Resource...
