Rule: Urban open space index areas within Upland Hardwood in top 30% Reason: Many rare plants that require disturbance in the Upland Hardwood ecosystem are not effectively covered by LCC indicators and natural disturbances are no longer sufficient to maintain their populations. Many rare upland hardwood plants now rely on railroad tracks, roadsides, and small human created prairies for their survival. Cultivation and establishment of rare disturbance dependent upland hardwood plants in high priority Blueprint areas near urban areas could provide a unique way for urban areas to improve the overall integrity of the upland hardwoods ecosystem

Acres of Forested Wetlands These layers give more information about the forested wetlands indicator for the South Atlantic LCC. These layers show the change in percent impervious cover over time and the projected change in the future. Reason for selection Overall acreage provides an indicator of whether forested wetlands being inundated by sea level rise are being replaced or restored somewhere else, is well monitored, and resonates with a diversity of audiences Target No net loss of protected forested wetlands Input Data: Protected Areas Database of the United States, PAD US CBI Edition V2 (October 2012) National Conservation Easement Database (NCED 05152013) NLCD 1992, 2001, 2006 2050 Landcover Estimate...

Permeable Surface This is a draft layer proposed by the South Atlantic LCC as a potential indicator for freshwater aquatic ecosystem. It is an index of permeable surface within NHD Plus catchments. If selected this layer will help inform Blueprint 2.1, scheduled for release in July 2016. All of the layers in this map service are showing the same data layer, but they are display with different classifications and stretches to help the indicator revision team review the layers. Indicators provide a way to measure progress toward overall goals of ecosystem integrity and intact cultural landscapes. They include species, habitat, and abiotic ecosystem process metrics. Your Cooperative selected indicators that can...

Rule: All areas within 2.5 mi of Top 30% pine areas Reason: Education/outreach about prescribed fire near pine ecosystems to 1) “Reduce public anxiety about smoke and the wildland fires that cause it by increasing understanding about current conditions, the ecological role of fire, the use and expected outcomes of prescribed fires, and smoke management activities” and 2) “Increasing public acceptance of fire management strategies” (Olson et al 2014). 2.5 mi radius is based on 25 mile smoke screening distances for Southern Ecosystems (U.S. Forest Service, 2012) and 1% rule for critical areas (http://www.bugwood.org/pfire/smoke.html)

Rule: Non-secured land in top 30% priority Reason: LCC is mostly private and so incentives will be needed for most areas not formally protected. Incentives should also overlap land/water protection as there may not be willing sellers in even the highest priority places
thumbnail
Rule: All protected areas in Top 30% Reason: Protected areas help connect people with nature and historical cultural landscapes. Education and outreach in these places help generate community support for conservation actions
thumbnail
Rule: Top 10% not already secured and not in SLR threat zone Reason: Protection being the most expensive and long term action get’s reserved for only the best places. 10% is based on taking how much land protection has happened annually in the LCC and extrapolating that out to 2050.

This map contains multiple layers related to the draft corridors in Blueprint 2.2 Inland Hubs These are the hubs used in the Linkage Mapper-based connectivity analysis for the inland portion of the South Atlantic area in Blueprint 2.2. Input Data -- Ecosystem scores from Zonation for all inland ecosystems (beach and dune, estuarine marsh, forested wetland, freshwater marsh, maritime forest, pine and prairie, upland hardwood) -- The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) Resilient Land Project -- TNC's Secured Lands Database (External Eastern Division 2014) Mapping Steps 1) Individual ecosystem integrity scores (Zonation outputs) for the inland ecosystems (beach and dune, estuarine marsh, forested wetland, freshwater marsh,...

This map contains multiple layers related to the corridors in an older version of the South Atlantic Blueprint, Version 2.1. Terrestrial Hubs These are the hubs used in the Linkage Mapper-based connectivity analysis for the terrestrial portion of the South Atlantic area in Blueprint 2.1. Input Data -- Ecosystem scores from Zonation for all inland ecosystems (beach and dune, estuarine marsh, forested wetland, freshwater marsh, maritime forest, pine and prairie, upland hardwood) -- The Nature Conservancy’s Southeast Resilience Project and Northeast Resilience Project -- The Nature Conservancy's Secured Lands Database (External Eastern Division 2014) Mapping Steps 1) Individual ecosystem integrity scores (Zonation...
