These data are daily climate, water balance, and soil moisture data for 270 plots in the National Park Service (NPS) Southern Colorado Plateau Network (SCPN) Inventory & Monitoring (I&M) network. Climate data was collected from a gridded, daily climate dataset, Daymet (https://daymet.ornl.gov/). Climate, alongside field-collected soils (SoilDepthsByPlot.csv) and vegetation information, were then used to drive a point based, daily, multi soil-layer, ecosystem water-balance model, SOILWAT2 (https://github.com/DrylandEcology/SOILWAT2). SCPN plots were established to capture the range of ecosystem conditions present in this network. Plant communities of the SCPN are a vital sign for this region, enhancing habitat, stabilizing...

Extreme climate events– such as hurricanes, droughts, ice storms, extreme precipitation, and wildfires– have the potential to cause large changes in watershed processes, response, and function. A five-year post-wildfire study of stream chemistry in the Colorado Front Range USA, enabled the analysis of the effects these events have water quality, which is published in the journal article Murphy, S.F., McCleskey, R.B., Martin, D.A., Writer, J.H., and Ebel, B.A., in review, Fire, flood, and drought: Extreme climate events alter flowpaths and stream chemistry: JGR-Biogeosciences. That article describes how extreme climate events altered concentration-discharge relations in ways that elucidate hydrologic flow paths and...

Documented in this data release are data used to model and map the probability of arsenic being greater than 10 micrograms per liter in private domestic wells throughout the conterminous United States during drought conditions (Lombard and others, 2020). The model used to predict the probability of arsenic exceeding 10 micrograms per liter in private domestic wells was previously developed and documented by Ayotte and others (2017). Independent variables in the model include groundwater recharge and annual precipitation. In order to assess the impact of drought these variables were altered to simulate drought by reducing the 30-year average annual values by 25 and 50 percent. The impact of drought was also assessed...

This metadata record describes outputs from 12 configurations of long short-term memory (LSTM) models which were used to predict streamflow drought occurrence at 384 stream gage locations in the Colorado River Basin region. The models were trained on data from 01-Oct-1981 to 31-Mar-2005 and validated over the period of record spanning 01-Apr-2005 to 31-Mar- 2014. The models use explanatory variable inputs described in Wieczorek (2023) (doi.org/10.5066/P98IG8LO) to predict daily streamflow and streamflow percentiles as described in Simeone (2022) (doi.org/10.5066/P92FAASD). Separate models were trained to predict daily streamflow and streamflow percentiles. Two types of percentiles were modeled: (1) fixed-threshold...

The south central U.S. is one of the main agricultural regions in North America and annual agricultural production is valued at more than $44 billion dollars. Climate variability and drought have both direct and indirect impacts on agriculture and consequences for land management. There are many different drought monitoring products and tools available, but unfortunately most were developed without input from the stakeholders who are intended to use them. In the SC CSC region private landowners, such as farmers and ranchers, are responsible for the majority of land management. The goal of this project is to assess the information needs of famers and ranchers in the SC CSC region in the development of drought monitoring...

The past decade includes some of the most extensive boreal forest fires in the historical record. Environmental drivers include warming temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, desiccation of thick organic soil layers, and increased ignition frequency from lightning. Wildland fires produce smoke aerosols that can travel thousands of kilometers, before blanketing the surfaces on which they fall, such as the Juneau Icefield of Alaska. This data release presents chemical constituent and physical particulate results from investigations of wildland fire smoke deposits and other atmospheric deposition characteristics stored in layers of ice in the Juneau Icefield of Alaska, USA (Tables 1 and 2). We drilled a series...
These data were compiled for research pertaining to the effects of stand density treatments on growth rates in semi-arid, ponderosa pine forests. Also, these data examined how the planned restoration treatments in the Four Forests Restoration Initiative (4FRI), the largest forest restoration project being implemented in the United States, would alter landscape-scale patterns of forest growth and drought vulnerability throughout the 21st century. Using drought-growth relationships developed within the landscape, we considered a suite of climate and thinning scenarios and estimated both average forest growth and the proportion of years with extremely low growth as a measure of vulnerability to long-term decline. The...

These data were collected from 27 April 2017 through 4 Septmber 2017. Data are measurements of plant physiology collected using a LI-COR LI-6400XT Portable Photosynthesis System. Methods detailed in: Lahr, E.C., Backe, K.M. & Frank, S.D. Intraspecific variation in morphology, physiology, and ecology of wildtype relative to horticultural varieties of red maple (Acer rubrum). Trees 34, 603–614 (2020).
These data were compiled to assess the response of vegetation and biological soil crusts to drought in a semi-arid ecosystem on the Colorado Plateau near Moab, Utah. Objective(s) of our study were to explore how vegetation cover, soil conditions, and growing season nitrogen (N) availability are impacted by multifaceted drying climate conditions using data from a long-term precipitation reduction experiment (30% reduction). In 2010, U.S. Geological Survey biologists installed paired experimental plots with a control plot and a plot covered by a shelter that excluded 35% of incoming precipitation. These 40 sites represent shallow vs. deep soils and sandstone vs. shale parent material. These data were collected at...
These data were compiled to measure airborne horizontal mass flux of sediments moved by wind across soils, climates, vegetation types, and land uses on the Colorado Plateau. Objectives of our study were to quantify spatial and temporal patterns in wind erosion and further our understanding of how soil and site setting, climate, and land uses are controlling wind erosion and horizontal mass flux. These data represent seasonal cumulative horizontal mass flux as measured using passive aspirated sediment traps, Big Spring Number Eight (BSNE) samplers. These data were collected in Grand and San Juan counties, Utah, and Mesa County, Colorado, USA between August 2017 and November 2020. These data were collected by the...

Amphibians are among the most sensitive taxa to climate change, and species inhabiting arid and semiarid landscapes at the extremes of their range are especially vulnerable to periods of drought. The Jack Creek, Oregon, USA population of Oregon spotted frogs (Rana pretiosa) faces unique challenges occupying the highest elevation site in the species’ extant range and one that has been hydrologically transformed by loss of American beaver (Castor canadensis). We evaluated the effect of drought mitigation (addition of excavated ponds) on relationships between local water availability, legacy beaver dams, and R. pretiosa population dynamics in the Jack Creek system. We conducted capture-mark-recapture sampling at a...
This data release documents time-series analyses of aqueous-chemistry data from public-supply wells (PSWs) and associated potential explanatory factors to characterize responses of groundwater quality to drought and recovery periods in California’s San Joaquin Valley (SJV) during 2000-2022. Annual median nitrate values were computed for PSWs throughout the SJV during the period of study. Median annual nitrate values were calculated at all PSWs with available data in the SJV, resulting in a total of 698 PSWs with complete annual records after single-year linear gap imputation. A total of 237 of these records were classified as “low variance” because they contained proportions of identical values exceeding 80 percent...
These data were compiled for research pertaining to the effects of stand density on growth rates in semi-arid forests. Increasing heat and aridity in coming decades is expected to negatively impact tree growth and threaten forest sustainability in dry areas. Maintaining low stand density has the potential to mitigate the negative effects of increasingly severe droughts by minimizing competitive intensity. By inspecting growth rates and the climate and soil moisture conditions that drive these growth rates we can understand better the positive effects of reducing stand density and the specific dynamics that are beneficial to growth.
Management and disturbances have significant effects on grassland forage production. When using satellite remote sensing to monitor climate impacts such as drought stress on annual forage production, minimizing these effects provides a clearer climate signal in the productivity data. The use of an ecosystem performance approach for assessment of seasonal and interannual climate impacts on forage production in semi-arid grasslands proved to be a successful method in a case study covering the Nebraska Sandhills. In this study we developed a time series (2000-2018) of the Expected Ecosystem Performance (EEP), which serves as a proxy for annual forage production after accounting for non-climatic influences, while minimizing...

In 2013 five Taxodium distichum trees along a 125 m long transect of Hickory Point State Forest outside Pocomoke City, Maryland were outfitted with dendrobands. Each year the growth of the T. distichum trees was measured in terms of the ratio of that year's circumference to the previous year's circumference. Tree growth was measured until the year the tree died or the conclusion of the study in 2021.
