This dataset, AirWin.csv, contains the raw transcribed bird and marine mammal data collected during the 1997-2002 aerial winter Southeast Alaska Nearshore Waterbird Survey. Note that this dataset contains records of species that were omitted in the final, quality-controlled data (WinterSimplified.csv), due to detection issues or inappropriateness of the survey design for those species.

In the 1960s, US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Alaska Region Migratory Bird Management (MBM-AK) developed a protocol for aerial Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator) and Tundra Swan (C. columbianus) abundance surveys in Alaska that was used by several government agencies and private entities through 2015. This standardized survey protocol allowed data collected by these diverse organizations to be stored together in a common digital archival system called the Alaska Swan Database, which is maintained by MBM-AK. Contributions to the database ranged from relatively small, localized surveys to the statewide quinquennial Alaska Trumpeter Swan Survey. Survey timing was either the spring nesting period or late summer...

Duck banding data is integral to the Adaptive Harvest Management (AHM) process that uses both band recovery data and aerial breeding population survey data to establish hunting regulatory packages each year. Mallard banding in Alaska is one component of the process to set hunting regulations for ducks in the Pacific Flyway by providing harvest rate estimates for the Western Mallard AHM model (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 2021). Harvest rate is used in coordination with breeding population size estimates from the Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey to determine the optimal regulatory strategy (liberal, moderate, restrictive, or closed) for dabbling ducks in the Pacific Flyway. Each regulatory alternative...

This collection comprises the memoranda that have been produced annually since 2012 by MBM-Alaska for the Pacific Flyway to report abundance indices of lesser Canada geese, Taverner’s cackling geese, Western Population tundra swans, and trumpeter swans. The abundance indices of lesser Canada Geese and trumpeter swans were derived solely from WBPHS_AK data. Indices of Western Population tundra swans were derived from data collected during two MBM-AK surveys: WBPHS_AK and the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Coastal Zone Survey. Taverner’s cackling goose indices were derived from three MBM-AK surveys: WBPHS_AK, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Coastal Zone Survey, and the Arctic Coastal Plain Survey. For further information on these...

This is the GeoPackage (“TMG_TraditionalAreas.gpkg”) that contains the layer (“main.TMG_LakePolys”) depicting the spatial extent of the 209 lakes within the Traditional Survey Area that are assessed during the annual MBM-AK TLSA molting goose aerial surveys. This GeoPackage (NAD83; ESPG: 3338) was created by Michael Swain in August 2021 and subsequently emailed to Maggie Harings. It includes waterbody units, waterbody types, and waterbody perimiters as well as their areas.

In many areas surveyed during the North American WBPHS, ground surveys are conducted in conjunction with the aerial surveys to derive annual visibility correction factors (VCFs) for the aerial survey crews, which are used during analyses to adjust for detection bias. Due to the remoteness of strata 1–12, ground surveys are not conducted there. Instead, a set of fixed VCFs by species and basic habitat type (strata 1–7 = boreal forest; strata 8–11 = tundra; stratum 12) are used. The fixed VCFs that were used through 1991 were derived from work done in WBPHS prairie strata. During the years 1985–1991, efforts were made by the FWS Division of Migratory Bird Management-Alaska Region (MBM-Alaska) to develop more appropriate...

Starting in 1999, WBPHS_AK surveyors used the custom survey software RECORD (John I. Hodges, FWS-MBM-Alaska, retired) to record bird data and capture the survey flight track. Each observer had their own computer and obtained their own separate flight track each day. The track was recorded by capturing a GPS location every 5 seconds as long as the survey software was running. The software was started at some time between the aircraft’s engine start and the first transect, and was shut down at some time between the last transect and engine shut-down. The track thus includes the aircraft’s flight to and from transects as well as along the transects themselves. This collection comprises the track files from 1999 to present:...

The WBPHS_AK bird observation data are archived as two separate datasets: 1) the raw data as originally transcribed by survey observers; and 2) the data as edited via a quality-control (QC) process. Among other things, the QC process removed records of certain non-waterfowl species, and it changed some species codes to meet the MBM-Alaska Waterfowl Program’s standardized format for transect waterfowl surveys. The QC dataset is that which MBM-Alaska uses for analyses and is considered the most appropriate for sharing with other users. This collection of files comprises the raw transcribed WBPHS_AK bird-observation data. There is one file for each year and observer: WBPHS_YYYY_RawObs_OOO.csv, where YYYY=Year and OOO=Observer...

This collection of 10 separate geopackages contains the survey areas of the 1968-2015 Alaska Trumpeter Swan Surveys. The geopackages are named YYYY_AK_TRUS_Survey_Area.gpkg, where YYYY = survey year. Each year’s survey area consisted of a set of U.S. Geological Survey 1:63,360 scale quadrangle maps, where each map represented a potential sampling unit. The 1968-2005 surveys were designed to census the entire survey area, and thus all of the maps were surveyed in these years. The 2010 and 2015 surveys were stratified random samples (optimally allocated to minimize cost for a fixed variance); therefore, only a selected set of 100 maps were surveyed in these years. (Additional geopackages are available in the survey’s...

This is a table that contains all eight Aviatrix, GPS & camera data fields, including camera angle, transect number, sequence, computer time, camera time, latitude, longitude, and altitude. This table will be joined with the table that contains survey and file data and observer results to comprise the final data table that will be run through the bird analyses.

HydroSHEDS (Hydrological data and maps based on SHuttle Elevation Derivatives at multiple Scales) provides hydrographic information in a consistent and comprehensive format for regional and global-scale applications. HydroSHEDS offers a suite of geo-referenced data sets (vector and raster), including stream networks, watershed boundaries, drainage directions, and ancillary data layers such as flow accumulations, distances, and river topology information. HydroSHEDS is derived from elevation data of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) at 3 arc-second resolution. Available HydroSHEDS resolutions range from 3 arc-second (approx. 90 meters at the equator) to 5 minute (approx. 10 km at the equator) with seamless...

The significant rise in seismicity rates in Oklahoma and Kansas (OK–KS) in the last decade has led to an increased interest in studying induced earthquakes. Although additional instruments have been deployed in the region, there are still relatively few recordings at the distances (<20 km) and magnitudes (M4+) most relevant to earthquake hazard. In contrast, the USGS Did You Feel It? (DYFI) system has collected more than 200,000 observations during this period with 22,000+ observations at distances less than 20 km. This dataset has already been used to study the unique characteristics of induced earthquakes, to evaluate the extent of felt area, shaking, and damage, to compare intensity and ground motion metrics,...

Subduction zones are home to the most seismically active faults on the planet. The shallow megathrust interface of subduction zones host our largest earthquakes, and are the only faults capable of M9+ ruptures. Despite these facts, our knowledge of subduction zone geometry - which likely plays a key role in determining the spatial extent and ultimately the size of subduction zone earthquakes - is incomplete. Here we calculate the three- dimensional geometries of all active global subduction zones. The resulting model - Slab2 - provides for the first time a comprehensive geometrical analysis of all known slabs in unprecedented detail.
