This dataset depicts indices of forest fragmentation within the western U.S. This dataset can help inform prioritization of landscapes for conservation through identification of more intact forested areas. Forest fragmentation was assessed using information derived from the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) and USGS 1:100,000 scale roads. Within each forested ecoregion in the World Wildlife Fund ecoregions dataset, landscape units (land units) were defined using U.S. Census Bureau TIGER highway networks. Land units were blocks of forested land bounded by highways and were required to be at least 2,000 hectares in size. We compiled data on terrestrial lizards and snakes by querying the WWF WildFinder database for species occurrences by ecoregion of the following taxonomic groups: Sauria, Serpentes, Amphisbaenia, and Rhynchocephalia. The WWF WildFinder database is a spatially explicit online database of vertebrate species occurrences by ecoregion. Number of globally threatened freshwater mammal, bird, and crocodilian species, by freshwater ecoregion. We generated the map of number of freshwater mammals, birds, and crocodilian species per ecoregion that are threatened with extinction from multiple sources, including species range maps, as well as geographic range descriptions from literature and online sources (our primary sources are listed below). Threatened species refer to those listed by IUCN Red List as Vulnerable, Endangered, or Critically Endangered (www.redlist.org). Increasing pressures from land use coupled with future changes in climate will present unique challenges for California’s protected areas. Number of freshwater endemic species, by freshwater ecoregion. The map of the number of freshwater endemic species shows the number of endemic fish, freshwater turtles, crocodiles, and amphibians found in each freshwater ecoregion. To calculate the total number of endemic species by ecoregion, we simply added the number of endemic species in these four taxonomic groups. Fish endemics are from Abell et al. (2008). Extirpated fish species are included in these tallies, but resolved extinct species, as determined by the Committee on Recently Extinct Organisms, and introduced species are excluded. These draft files of of Level I, II, and III ecological regions of North America are an update and revision of files developed by Canada, the United States, and Mexico in the late 1990's in a cooperative project for the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC 1997). The condition of natural fire systems, by terrestrial ecoregion. Spatial data on the status and trends of fire regimes were developed under the Global Fire Partnership, a collaboration of nongovernment and academic institutions and summarized in Shlisky et al. (2007). The fire regime and its status and trends were established through a formal expert workshop process. Workshops were held around the world from 2004 to 2006. Percent of ecoregion area covered with grassland habitat. We derived the grasslands map from grassland classes of the Global Land Cover 2000 data set (JRC 2003) with areas of human habitation and infrastructure from the Global Rural-Urban Mapping Project database (CIESIN et al. 2004) removed. These data identify the mean population growth rate and ratio change in abundance of common raven (Corvus corax; ravens) populations from 1966 through 2018, delineated by ecoregions defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This enables researchers and land managers to identify regions which may be more heavily affected by growing raven populations. The average percent of forest cleared per year between 2000 – 2005, by terrestrial ecoregion. The map of forest clearing was produced using Vegetation Continuous Field (VCF) data (Hansen et al. 2006). VCF files were assembled by year for 2000 through 2005 by realm. These data sets were resampled to one-kilometer ground resolution and merged into a global product by year. We then subtracted data from 2001 from 2000 data; this process was applied to all subsequent years. The derived, differenced data sets were averaged to obtain an annual av¬erage for years 2000–2005. The second edition of "Ecoregions of Montana" (2002) revises many ecoregion polygon assignments that appeared in the first edition (Woods and others, 1999). These changes were made after research in Idaho (McGrath and others, 2002) recognized the Idaho Batholith as a separate level III ecoregion (Ecoregion 16), limited the Northern Rockies (15) to strongly marine-influenced areas, and transferred the Montana Valley and Foothill Prairies (formerly Ecoregion 16) to another level III ecoregion, the Middle Rockies (17). Permeability refers to the degree to which a landscape sustains ecological processes and supports movement of many species by virtue of the structural connectedness of its natural systems (Meiklejohn et al 2010). We used resistant kernel analysis (Compton et al. 2007) to map permeability as a focal statistic based on the resistance data from the terrestrial condition dataset.
