Several scales of land classification are provided. The bio-geoclimatic ecosystem classification, and ecosection classifications include both biological and physical characteristics. The physiographic provinces are based entirely on physical characteristics of the landscape.
The study area boundary used to define the extant of the enduring features model. This boundary is the Outer Fjordland; Georgia Strait provincial ecosection and includes a version buffered by 40 km.
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and socio-economic spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.

Place names are selected from the BC gazetteer dated November 2012. Study area boundaries are defined by ecosections or watersheds as determined by requirements for the development of spatial data (e.g., budget, topical influence on study area). The physiographic boundary covers the largest area and is a selection of physiographic provinces intersecting with the watershed boundary. This boundary was not used in the project data development but offers important context to the physical setting of the Discovery Islands.
