This data set consists of data collected during 2005-2007, 2010, and 2015 at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Iowa, USA that were used in the analysis in support of the article titled "Toward improving pollinator habitat: Reconstructing prairies with high forb diversity," which has been submitted to Natural Areas Journal. We compared pollinator habitat, in terms of planted forb richness, cover, and phenology, cover of planted grasses, and persistence of exotic species 10-years post-planting of reconstructions with 58 species (extra-high), 34 species (high), 20 species (medium) and 10 species (low) planted at the same time using the same fields, methods, and overall seeding rate. Twelve replicates of three...

This dataset provides cost estimates for 668 dam removal projects occurring in the United States. Cost estimates were obtained by searching the internet for sources of information that mention the cost of dam removal projects listed in the USGS Dam Removal Information Portal. When cost data were not available for a dam removal but contact information was, then personal communications were used to acquire additional cost information. The accuracy of estimates is not known but we assume that most estimates represent close to the total cost or the minimum financial cost, with overestimates being rare. Total cost information could include component costs related to project planning, dam deconstruction cost, and several...

These data were compiled to investigate the evolutionary history of Graham's beardtongue (Penstemon grahamii). Objective(s) of our study were to determine the evolutionary history of P. grahamii, including ancestral population sizes, the history of population divergences, and historical connectivity. In addition, we characterized population structure, genetic diversity summary statistics, and landscape factors influencing differentiation. These data represent anonymous loci sequenced from throughout the P. grahamii genome (specifically, .vcf and .structure files). Data in these files were manipulated to represent site frequency spectra between population pairs (.data files). These data were collected in 2019 from...

This dataset contains the physical collection information (e.g., sample location, date, gear type) and microsatellite DNA genotype of egg and larval Lake Sturgeon collected in the St. Clair and Detroit rivers in 2015 and 2016. Individuals were genotyped for 18 microsatellite loci (13 disomic and 5 polysomic). Alleles (base pair sizes) were recorded as presence absence scores (1:present, 2:absent, 0:missing data) for all previously observed alleles. Thus individual genotypes were recorded as pseudo diploid dominant phenotypes resulting in individual vectors of length n=205 for each genotyped egg or larval individual.

These data were compiled to investigate the evolutionary history of Hilaria jamesii, Hilaria mutica, and Hilaria rigida. The data release consists of two tab delimited text files that may be used to infer population structure (viva_structure.stru) or relationships among sampling localities (viva.phylip). Files record genetic variation on an individual (.stru) or sampling locality (.phylip) level. These files may be opened and edited in a text editor program, such as Notepad ++ (PC) or BBEdit (Mac). The .phylip file can be uploaded to phyML or SVDQuartets to generate a tree-based visualization of relationships ( http://www.atgc-montpellier.fr/phyml/ or https://paup.phylosolutions.com, repectively). The .stru file...
This study employs the hedonic pricing method and a rich spatial and temporal dataset from two counties in Washington, USA to determine the effect of the 2009 Nisqually Restoration project (NRP) on housing prices in adjacent communities. The NRP restored 308 hectares of wetlands via dike removal in the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge (NNWR), leading to improvements in salmon and bird abundance and recreational opportunities. We find that the ecological improvements made by the NRP increased the value of homes within 0.5 mile of the refuge by $37,631; homes 0.5 to 1 mile by $10,489; and homes 1 to 1.5 miles by $31,186. Our findings are consistent with previous wetland hedonic price analyses and...

The Rio Grande provides drinking water for more than six million people, irrigation water for two million acres of land in the United States and Mexico, and supports riparian ecosystems that are home to endangered species like the ocelot and Rio Grande silvery minnow. Climate variability and anthropogenic activities continue to stress this already limited water resource. This project was developed in response to a request from a group of stakeholders who work in the Basin and represent federal, state and local agencies, private industry, farmers, ranchers, and NGOs. These stakeholders identified the need for a comprehensive data resource that spatially depicts where conservation activities are occurring on the ground....

The dataset includes several measurements collected for two complementary phases of a Sandberg bluegrass restoration project. In the first phase of the project, percentage of vegetation and soil surface cover (e.g. soil, rock) were measured within each of 20 treatment plots (described in the following section) using the Line Point Intercept (LPI) method (Herrick et al. 2005) from 2019-2021. Sandberg bluegrass density was also measured by counting individual plants within 0.5 x 0.5 meter quadrats systematically placed along the transects. Herbaceous biomass was destructively harvested within 0.5 x 0.5 m quadrats that were also systematically placed (at different meter marks than density quadrats) along the transects....

This dataset is a compilation of completed, in progress, and planned restoration projects identified in the study area by the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) Project Tracker as of March 2022. The goal of compiling projects and information was to identify target resources and impacts of these projects in the study area. Projects were screened for action types, completion year, and resources intended to benefit from restoration in barrier island and shoreline systems. In addition, system components of structure and function were identified. The potential for geomorphological impacts was categorized among different types of projects.
Under the 2012 Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability, Tourist Opportunities, and Revived Economies of the Gulf Coast States Act (RESTORE Act) the the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council (Council), has statutory requirements to report on the progress of funded projects and programs. Each Council funded project will perform project sites specific monitoring. In order to effectively aggregate and analyze project specific results, there is a need to establish monitoring and assessment protocols and standards for the Council that will be followed by each project. This will allow the Council to better evaluate progress towards comprehensive ecosystem restoration and better leverage ongoing monitoring efforts by...

Data represent physical (water quality, water nutrient analysis) and biological (fish, macroinvertebrate, and vegetation community) collections from the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge in Saginaw, MI, USA (specifically, historical management unit "Pool 1A" and the North and South management units of the Maankiki Marsh Complex.) The North and South management units of the Maankiki Marsh Complex were reconnected to the Shiawassee River in 2018, whereas Pool 1A represents a historically reconnected wetland. Additional sites within the Shiawassee River and Spaulding Drain (east of Pool 1A) were also sampled to represent parameters collected from the parent water system. All data were collected in 2019.

Conclusions: Four plant species have been tested in the majority of field evaluations, while plants native to the test area and perennial plants are particularly underrepresented. Native plants useful in restoration of rare ecosystems can increase natural enemy abundance and provide ecosystem services as much as widely recommended non-natives. Thresholds/Learnings: Synopsis: The intentional provision of flowering plants and plant communities in managed landscapes to enhance natural enemies is termed habitat management and is a relatively new but growing aspect of conservation biology. The focus of most habitat management research has been on understanding the role of these plant-provided resources on natural enemy...

Environmental Analysis Data: These data were compiled to investigate the complex interactions between environmental gradients and geographic distance across the Intermountain West of the western United States. Due to complex topography, physiographic heterogeneity, and complicated relationships with large bodies of water, spatial autocorrelation of environmental similarity may be expected. We provide an R script (VarioAnalysis.R) that uses four associated data files (annualprecip.csv, annualSWA.csv, annualtemp.csv, key.csv) to reproduce Figure 3 in Massatti et al. 2020 (see Larger Work Citation). The data files contain information on yearly soil water availability, temperature, and precipitation, which are summed...

These data were compiled for research pertaining to the effects of stand density treatments on growth rates in semi-arid, ponderosa pine forests. Also, these data examined how the planned restoration treatments in the Four Forests Restoration Initiative (4FRI), the largest forest restoration project being implemented in the United States, would alter landscape-scale patterns of forest growth and drought vulnerability throughout the 21st century. Using drought-growth relationships developed within the landscape, we considered a suite of climate and thinning scenarios and estimated both average forest growth and the proportion of years with extremely low growth as a measure of vulnerability to long-term decline. The...
