We used free-ranging northern elephant seals as a model species to investigate maternal transfer of mercury (Hg) to pups in relation to maternal traits, including maternal blood mercury concentrations, and to quantify the links between pup lanugo mercury concentrations and maternal mesopelagic foraging behavior during gestation. We satellite tracked known-age adult females at sea during their seven-month-long foraging trip to determine maternal foraging strategies (geographic locations and diving depths) and quantified mercury concentrations in maternal blood and their pups’ blood and lanugo (which is defined as pup hair grown in utero) early in lactation when seals were hauled out. We then tested how the maternal...

We investigated whether the length of time fire chemical weathers on a terrestrial substrate before mixing into aquatic environments alters the chemical’s toxicity when encountered by juvenile rainbow trout. We also looked at whether the type of substrate where the chemical is applied affects its toxicity to juvenile rainbow trout after mixing into water. Two fire chemicals (Phos Chek LC95A-R and Phos Chek MVP-Fx) were applied to four substrate media (low organic content soil, high organic content soil, duff, and gravel) and allowed to age on the substrate for 7, 14, 28 or 56 days. At the end of the assigned weathering period, 96-hour assays were conducted by adding water to the dosed substrate and stocking each...

Sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense) samples were collected from marshes on five different keys (Big Pine, Torch, Ramrod, Cudjoe, and Sugarloaf Keys) within National Key Deer Refuge in January and June of 2015 and analyzed for contamination by the mosquito control insecticide permethrin. Permethrin was detected on 17 of 57 samples collected in January while it was detected on 40 of 56 samples collected in June. The concentrations on samples collected in January (below detection to 16 ng/g ww) were lower than concentrations on samples collected in June (below detection to 57.7 ng/g).

The Permian Basin, straddling New Mexico and Texas, is one of the most productive oil and gas (OG) provinces in the United States. OG production yields large volumes of wastewater that contain elevated concentrations of major ions including salts (also referred to as brines), and trace organic and inorganic constituents. These OG wastewaters pose unknown environmental health risks, particularly in the case of accidental or intentional releases. Releases of OG wastewaters have resulted in water-quality and environmental health effects at sites in West Virginia (Akob, et al., 2016, Orem et al. 2017, Kassotis et al. 2016) and in the Williston Basin region in Montana and North Dakota (Cozzarelli et al. 2017, Cozzarelli...

We determined acute and chronic toxicity of sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) to up to 7 freshwater species of different taxa in a hardness water of 40 mg/L as CaCO3 and evaluated the effect of 4 hardness waters (15, 30, 60, and 120 mg/L as CaCO3) on acute toxicity of NaCl and Na2SO4 to 3 sensitive species tested in the acute exposures. This data release reports results from acute and chronic exposures with Ceriodaphnia dubia (cerios), Chironomus dilutus (midge), Hyalella azteca (amphipod), Hyla versicolor (gray treefrog), Lampsilis abrupta (pink mucket), Lampsilis siliquoidea (fatmucket), and Pimephales promelas (fathead minnow. Date include survival, size, and other endpoints and associated water...
Coho salmon have been shown to be highly sensitive to the tire transformation chemical 6PPD-quinone, with concentrations contained in stormwater sufficient to induce mortality in up to 90% of the entire fall coho run. Other salmonid species (chinook, sockeye, chum) are much less sensitive to 6PPD-quinone induced mortality. This data examines the varying species sensitivities across salmoids using in vivo exposures in juvenile fish. We then used established cell lines forom these species to assess their suitability for in vitro studies concerning species differences in toxicokinetics using fluorescence and absorbance-based plate assays.

A number of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) have been reported to interfere with the thyroid signaling pathway and cause oxidative stress in birds, yet the underlying shifts in gene expression associated with these effects remain poorly understood. In this study, we measured hepatic transcriptional responses of 31 genes in American kestrel hatchlings following in ovo exposure to one of three high-volume alternative BFRs: 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTPBE), bis(2-ethylhexyl)-2,3,4,5-tetrabromophthalate (TBPH), or 2-ethylhexyl-2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (EHTBB). Hatchling kestrels exhibited shifts in the expression of genes related to oxidative stress (CYP, GSTA, SOD, GPx), thyroid hormone metabolism...

This data release contains analytical results of organohalogenated compounds and mercury in lamprey and sediment that were collected from rivers in Oregon and along the Pacific northwest coast from 2017 to 2021. In 2017, 20 lamprey were collected off the Washington and Oregon coasts by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. These ocean-caught juvenile lamprey were parasitizing targeted fish and were bycatch. In 2019, larval lamprey were collected by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs of Oregon from 8 sites on the Warm Springs Reservation. Larval lamprey were collected by electroshocking depositional sediment areas. Collocated depositional sediment samples also were collected along with the larval...

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a globally pervasive contaminant that biomagnifies in food webs and can reach toxic concentrations in consumers at higher trophic levels, including wildlife and humans. The production of MeHg, and its subsequent entry and biomagnification in food webs, is governed by a complex suite of biogeochemical, physical, and ecological processes, resulting in spatial variation in the distribution of MeHg. To better understand the link between MeHg production in sediments and MeHg bioaccumulation in biota, we evaluated the effects of habitat biogeochemistry, food web structure, and diet composition on bioaccumulation in the wetland-obligate California black rail (Laterallus jamaicensis coturniculus)...

Coho salmon have been shown to be highly sensitive to the tire-derived chemical 6PPD-quinone. Concentrations contained in stormwater and in urban streams during the fall spawning season are sufficient to induce mortality in up to 90% of the entire fall coho run, threating the long-term survival of populations in urban areas. Another area of concern is survival of coho salmon embryos of adults that successfully reach spawning grounds. This dataset encompasses two separate experiments assessing survival and morphology of embryos exposed to measured concentrations of 6PPD-quinone during development.

We conducted multiple toxicity tests to (1) evaluate the survival and growth of juvenile mussels (Fatmucket, Lampsilis siliquoidea) in a standard 4-week and a longer-term 12-week exposures following a method refined from the standard method using two common reference toxicants (potassium chloride [KCl] and nickel [Ni]); (2) evaluate reproductive endpoints from reproductive KCl and Ni toxicity tests. Reproductive toxicity tests started with Fatmucket brooding mature glochidia to five concentrations of K and Ni for 6 weeks. Subsamples of glochidia were then removed from the adults to determine (1) the viability of brooded glochidia; (2) the viability of free glochidia in a 24-h additional exposure; and (3) success...
