The Mercury Deposition Network (MDN) is a national database of weekly concentrations of total mercury in precipitation and the seasonal and annual flux of total mercury in wet deposition. The data is used to develop information on spatial and seasonal trends in mercury deposited to surface waters, forested watersheds, and other sensitive receptors. The MDN is part of the National Atmospheric Deposition Project (NADP) Network. Analysis of precipitation samples for total- and methylmercury is performed by Frontier Geosciences, Inc., Seattle WA, USA. Frontier Geosciences provides the environmental sciences community with uncompromisingly high-quality contract research, project design and management, and analytical...

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a globally pervasive contaminant that biomagnifies in food webs and can reach toxic concentrations in consumers at higher trophic levels, including wildlife and humans. The production of MeHg, and its subsequent entry and biomagnification in food webs, is governed by a complex suite of biogeochemical, physical, and ecological processes, resulting in spatial variation in the distribution of MeHg. To better understand the link between MeHg production in sediments and MeHg bioaccumulation in biota, we evaluated the effects of habitat biogeochemistry, food web structure, and diet composition on bioaccumulation in the wetland-obligate California black rail (Laterallus jamaicensis coturniculus)...

Neonicotinoids, a widely used class of insecticide, have been found in surface waters globally. They pose a risk to non-target species found in aquatic environments such as aquatic macroinvertebrates. To better understand the effects of the neonicotinoids imidacloprid, clothianidin and their mixtures on aquatic communities we ran a 30 day mesocosm test. Rock trays were colonized with natural benthic communities in the Cache La Poudre River, located in the mountains of Northern Colorado, and relocated to a laboratory experimental stream setting. In total there were 33 experimental streams: 3 controls and 30 treatments consisting of both single compound and binary compound exposures with 5 treatment levels for each...

Data were collected from Xenopus laevis tadpoles exposed to clothianidin and thiamethoxam in two concentrations each, 100 ppm and 20 ppm. Gene expression was generated from brains and livers, and liver cells provided metabolic activity data.

In a series of 4 experiments conducted over 4 years, natural lotic macroinvertebrate communities were colonized by placing baskets of large gravel in a riffle in the upper Cache La Poudre River, Colorado and leaving the baskets in place for 30-40 days. The communities were then exposed in experimental streams to different combinations of five metals (cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn). The metals exposures and associated counts of larval insects and other invertebrates remaining in the experimental streams are detailed in Child Items 1-4 of this Data Release. In this dataset (child item #5), we report the associated adult insect counts by day that successfully metamorphosed during...

Dataset consists of 4-day, 14-day, and full life responses of laboratory cultured mayflies (Neocloeon triangulifer) to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Responses were measured as survival at 4 days, 14 days, pre-emergent nymph (PEN) stage, and emergence; 14-day length; number of days to PEN stage, and imago live weight. Water quality and analytical chemistry results associated with toxicity data are included.

Nitrapyrin, a nitrification inhibitor, and three co-applied herbicides (acetochlor, atrazine, and metolachlor) were measured in soil samples from an agricultural field in Iowa. Samples were collected from three locations in the field before and after nitrapyrin application in April-May 2017. Soils were collected using a 5-inch pipe that was hammered into the ground. Soil samples were extracted using pressurized solvent extraction (with dichloromethane), clean-up via solid phase extraction (carbon and alumina sorbents), and analyzed by gas chromatography with mass-spectrometry.
Statistical inferences play a critical role in ecotoxicology. Historically, Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST) has been the dominant method for inference in ecotoxicology. As a brief and informal definition of the NHST approach, researchers compare (or “test”) an experimental treatment or observation against a hypothesis of no relationship or effect (the “null hypothesis”) using the collected data to see if the observed values are statistically “significant” given predefined error rates. The resulting probability of observing a value equal to or greater than the observed value assuming the null hypothesis is true is the p-value. Criticisms of NHST have existed for almost a century and more recently these...

Methylmercury concentrations and stable isotope ratios were measured from back feathers of California black rails (Laterallus jamaicensis coturniculus) and six taxa of their invertebrate prey (Amphipoda, Arachnida, Coleoptera, Diptera, Gastropoda, and Hemiptera). Samples were collected from three wetlands in the spring and summer of 2005 and 2006.

Coho salmon have been shown to be highly sensitive to the tire-derived chemical 6PPD-quinone. Concentrations contained in stormwater and in urban streams during the fall spawning season are sufficient to induce mortality in up to 90% of the entire fall coho run, threating the long-term survival of populations in urban areas. Another area of concern is survival of coho salmon embryos of adults that successfully reach spawning grounds. This dataset encompasses two separate experiments assessing survival and morphology of embryos exposed to measured concentrations of 6PPD-quinone during development.

The Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset contains data collected on contaminants in sediments, benthic invertebrate populations, fish populations and abnormalities, and fish health of primarily brown bullhead in Areas of Concerns (AOCs) on Lake Erie. A subset of the larger dataset, this section specifically handles reference tables, used in database design in order to standardize often used values and to make the data file efficient, for the main tables of the LEEI dataset. The reference tables include: site.csv, site_date.csv, and species.csv.

Little is known about how design and testing methodologies affect the macroinvertebrate communities that are held captive in mesocosms. To address this gap, we conducted a 32-day test to determine how seeded invertebrate communities changed once removed from the natural stream and introduced to the laboratory. We evaluated larvae survival and adult emergence in controls from 4 subsequent experiments, as well as corresponding within-river community changes. The experimental streams maintained about 80% of the invertebrates that originally colonized the introduced substrates. Many macroinvertebrate populations experienced changes in numbers through time suggesting that these taxa are unlikely to maintain static populations...

The files in this data release are RNA seq datafiles from a study that examined the effects of the synthetic anabolic steroid 17β hydroxyestra 4,9,11 trien-3-one, trenbolone (17βT - CAS 10161-33-8), a common contaminant of wastes from confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) were exposed in the egg and through feed to multiple doses of 17βT and liver transcriptomes were examined to identify genes and pathways directly affected by this androgenic compound. RNA was extracted from liver of adults and embryos and analyzed (1x50 bp) on an Illumina HiSeq 2000. NCBI Biosample accessions and the raw counts that were input into the differential expression analysis are provided in this...

We conducted multiple toxicity tests to (1) evaluate the survival and growth of juvenile mussels (Fatmucket, Lampsilis siliquoidea) in a standard 4-week and a longer-term 12-week exposures following a method refined from the standard method using two common reference toxicants (potassium chloride [KCl] and nickel [Ni]); (2) evaluate reproductive endpoints from reproductive KCl and Ni toxicity tests. Reproductive toxicity tests started with Fatmucket brooding mature glochidia to five concentrations of K and Ni for 6 weeks. Subsamples of glochidia were then removed from the adults to determine (1) the viability of brooded glochidia; (2) the viability of free glochidia in a 24-h additional exposure; and (3) success...

This dataset is from the first of four experiments which test the toxicity of several metals with aquatic insect communities that were colonized in the field and then transferred and tested in experimental streams. Here we report original data from an experiment testing the toxicity of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn), singly and in mixtures, to natural aquatic insect communities. Trays of cleaned gravel were placed in a stream (the Cache La Poudre River, Colorado) and allowed to colonize for about 40 days before being translocated to Aquatic Experimental Stream Laboratory (AXL) which was located at the USGS Fort Collins Science Center. There the insects were exposed for 30 days to metal mixtures in ratios and concentrations...

During 2013-2017, the U.S. Geological Survey, National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Project, collected water samples year-round from the National Water Quality Network – Rivers and Streams (NWQN) and reported on 221 pesticides at 72 sites across the US in agricultural, developed, and mixed land use watersheds. Pesticide Toxicity Index (PTI) scores, a screening-level tool that uses an additive, toxic-unit model, were calculated to estimate the potential chronic and acute toxicity to 3 taxonomic groups – fish, cladocerans, and benthic invertebrates. The pesticide that makes the single largest (maximum) contribution to the PTI is called TUmax. This dataset consists of the PTI and TUmax scores, as well as, the TUmax...

This Fish Health Evaluation dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the health of fish—primarily brown bullhead—sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie, as measured by anomalies, tumors, biomarkers, and other heath indicators. The focus of the data in the Fish Health dataset is from the 1998-2000 study, which reevaluated fish health in comparison to data from various historical studies also in the dataset. All of the data from the 1998-2000 evaluation and the data used for comparison from historical studies are in the main FISH_HEALTH table; additional historical data, which presumably fell out of scope for comparison, is also in the OLDFISHDATA_NOTERIE...
