The Mercury Deposition Network (MDN) is a national database of weekly concentrations of total mercury in precipitation and the seasonal and annual flux of total mercury in wet deposition. The data is used to develop information on spatial and seasonal trends in mercury deposited to surface waters, forested watersheds, and other sensitive receptors. The MDN is part of the National Atmospheric Deposition Project (NADP) Network. Analysis of precipitation samples for total- and methylmercury is performed by Frontier Geosciences, Inc., Seattle WA, USA. Frontier Geosciences provides the environmental sciences community with uncompromisingly high-quality contract research, project design and management, and analytical...

This dataset is composed of a single data table containing survival data and ancillary measurements for brook trout bioassays conducted in streams of the Western Adirondack Mountains during 2001-03 and 2015-17. At each stream site, 4 replicate bottles, each containing five young-of-year brook trout, are exposed to ambient stream waters for approximately one month during spring.

Lab-reared colonies of Bombus huntii (Hunt bumble bee) were deployed in a commercial cherry orchard in the spring of 2016. A fungicide formulation containing boscalid (25.2%) and pyraclostrobin (12.8%) was applied one time at the recommended label rate. Nectar and pollen were collected daily, beginning two days before spray application and continuing for ten days following. Nectar samples were extracted with acetonitrile and cleaned up using dispersive solid-phase extraction with primary-secondary amine, C18, and magnesium sulfate. Pollen samples were extracted with ethyl acetate. Both types of samples were analyzed by GC-MS/MS for boscalid and pyraclostrobin. Fungicide concentrations in nectar varied spatially...

This dataset is from the third of four experiments which test the toxicity of several metals with aquatic insect communities that were colonized in the field and then transferred and tested in experimental streams. Here we report original data from testing the toxicity of copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn), singly and in mixtures, to natural aquatic insect communities. Methods are the same as those in Experiment 2, with the addition of in situ, in-vivo fluorescence measurements of benthic algae. Cu Trays of cleaned gravel were placed in a stream (the Cache La Poudre River, Colorado) and allowed to colonize for about 40 days before being translocated to Aquatic Experimental Stream Laboratory (AXL) which was...

An important component of assessing the hazards of anticoagulant rodenticides to non-target wildlife are observations in exposed free-ranging individuals. The objective of this study was to determine if environmentally realistic, sublethal first-generation anticoagulant rodenticide exposures via prey, can result in direct or indirect adverse effects to free-flying raptors. We offered black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) that had fed on Rozol® Prairie Dog Bait (0.005% active ingredient chlorophacinone) to six wild-caught red-tailed hawks (RTHA, Buteo jamaicensis), and uncontaminated black-tailed prairie dogs to two wild-caught RTHAs for 7 days. On day 6, blood was collected from all eight RTHAs to determine...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the chronic toxicity of potassium (tested as KCl) to a commonly tested unionid mussel (fatmucket, Lampsilis siliquoidea) at five water hardness levels (25, 50, 100, 200, 300 mg/L as CaCO3) representing most surface waters in the United States. Chronic 28-d potassium chloride toxicity tests were conducted with 3-week-old juvenile fatmucket using six concentrations of potassium in the five base waters of differing hardness using ASTM standard methods. In this data release we report individual survival, mass, and length along with chemical and water quality measurements.

Ultra-low volumes of naled are applied by aircraft over rice fields and canals to reduce adult mosquito populations near Sacramento, California. Each summer, the pesticide is applied approximately 7-10 times between July and October. Naled and its major degradate (dichlorvos) were quantified in water, biofilm, and invertebrates following aerial applications. In 2020, samples were collected before the naled application season, after 3 rice field and 5 canal applications, and immediately after an application. In 2021, water and crayfish samples were collected before the naled application season, after 3 applications, and at intervals (1, 3, 5, and 7 days) following an application. A few opportunistic samples (including...

The phenylpyrazole insecticide fipronil and its degradates are a potential surface-water contaminant and toxicant to nontarget species such as aquatic macroinvertebrates. To better understand how fipronil, fipronil sulfide, fipronil sulfone, desulfinyl fipronil, and fipronil amide affect aquatic communities, a 30-day mesocosm experiment was run. Rock trays were colonized with natural benthic communities in the Cache La Poudre River in the mountains of northern Colorado and transplanted into a laboratory experimental stream setting. In total, there were 36 experimental streams: 3 controls, 3 solvent controls, and 30 treatments. Water quality metrics and samples for pesticide analysis were collected throughout the...
