The US Geological Survey Chesapeake Bay Watershed Land Cover Data Series, 2011 edition, (CBLCD-e11) consists of Level I Land Cover data for the years 1984, 1992, 2001, 2006 and 2011. It consists of a series of five 8-bit unsigned integer raster data files of 30 meter spatial resolution in Albers Conic Equal Area projection, NAD83 datum. The 1984 – 2006 data layers were created by aggregating most Level II Anderson classes of the USGS CBLCD Land Cover Data Series released in 2010 (Irani and Claggett, 2010).

This data release contains coastal wetland synthesis products for the geographic region from Jamaica Bay to western Great South Bay, located in southeastern New York State. Metrics for resiliency, including unvegetated to vegetated ratio (UVVR), marsh elevation, and mean tidal range, are calculated for smaller units delineated from a Digital Elevation Model, providing the spatial variability of physical factors that influence wetland health. Through scientific efforts initiated with the Hurricane Sandy Science Plan, the U.S. Geological Survey has been expanding national assessment of coastal change hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands with the intent of providing Federal, State, and local managers with...

We collected detailed spatial data on the density and size distribution of intertidal snails as part of a broader effort to understand food webs in California estuaries. The survey area was Carpinteria Salt Marsh, California USA, which comprises 9 Ha tidal channels, 2 Ha salt flats, 17 Ha upland habitat, 6 Ha tidal pans, 52 Ha vegetated marsh, 2 Ha tidal flats. Using nearly 4,000 transects in potential snail habitat, we mapped snails throughout the estuary. Specifically, we systematically placed transects at intervals stratified within targeted habitat types: channels, pans, or marsh (or planar habitat that was mixed marsh and pan). At a quarter of the quadrats, we also estimated snail size-frequency distributions....

To address the data and information gap for characterizing coastal drought, a coastal salinity index (CSI) was developed using salinity data (Conrads 2016; Conrads and Darby, 2017). The CSI uses an approach similar to the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), a readily available drought index that is widely used for monitoring meteorological droughts (McKee and others, 1993). The CSI substitutes total monthly precipitation with monthly mean salinity data to determine the probability of recording a given salinity value in a particular month. The initial investigation demonstrated that the index could be used to delineate short- and long-term drought (saline) and wet (high freshwater inflow) conditions; however,...

A subset of the Louisiana's 2017 Coastal Master Plan model output was used to estimate the potential climate mitigation role of Louisiana’s coastal area. Model output of surface water salinity, land/water classification, and area of eight habitats for elapsed years of 6, 11, 16, 26, and 36 were post-processed to estimate habitat areas at years of 2020, 2025, 2030, 2040, and 2050, that align with the Governor of Louisiana’s greenhouse gas reduction targets. In addition, the Louisiana coastal boundary and a static mask of upland and developed area were used to define the coastal area. The modeled habitat areas with literature review of net ecosystem carbon balance fluxes per habitat were used in an analytical framework...

Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center investigated the sedimentary and geochemical properties of the lower reaches of the Pascagoula River along the Mississippi coast of the Gulf of Mexico by collecting estuarine, riverine and marsh sediments. This was done in order to increase understanding of the region's environmental history, describe the long-term (millennial-scale) depositional history, and identify sedimentary intervals associated with extreme marine intrusions. To this end, the group obtained long sediment cores, shovel-dug sediment slabs and marsh and riverine channel/estuarine surface samples from a north-south transect along the river edge from...

This data set contains shoreline rate of change statistics for New York State coastal wetlands. Analysis was performed using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS), created by U.S. Geological Survey, version 5.0, an extension for ArcMap. A reference baseline was used as the originating point for orthogonal transects cast by the DSAS software. The transects intersect each polyline vector shoreline establishing intersection measurement points, which were then used to calculate the rates of change. End-point rates, calculated by dividing the distance of shoreline movement by the time elapsed between the oldest and the most recent shoreline, were generated for wetlands where fewer than three historic shorelines...

Geo-referenced two-dimensional velocity profiles collected at a single cross-section in the upper Sacramento River Deep Water Ship Channel. Data were collected over a range of river conditions, collected hourly for 30 hours, with four 30-hours studies collected over four consecutive weeks in July and August 2019. Data are available as .csv files contained in the attached .zip file.

The 2008 - Present Ecosystem History of South Florida's Estuaries Database contains listings of all sites (modern and core) and modern monitoring site survey information (water chemistry, floral and faunal data, etc.). Three general types of data are contained within this database: 1) Modern Field Data (2008-present), 2) Master list of location information on all modern sites, and 3) Core data - location information. Data are available for modern sites (from 2008 to present) and cores in the general areas of Florida Bay, Biscayne Bay, and the southwest (Florida) coastal mangrove estuaries. Specific sites in the Florida Bay area include Taylor Creek, Bob Allen Key, Russell Bank, Pass Key, Whipray Basin, Rankin Bight,...

This topobathymetric digital elevation model (TBDEM) mosaic represents the topography and bathymetry for the Milwaukee River Estuary in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and adjacent terrestrial and Lake Michigan nearshore coastal areas. The TBDEM was produced in support of modeling and for developing a physical habitat framework to help with understanding the effects from multidirectional currents and seiche effects associated with the mixing of river flows with Lake Michigan backwater. The TBDEM mosaic is built off existing terrestrial, nearshore, and estuary frameworks developed for other areas around the Great Lakes and the Milwaukee River Harbor. Ranging from 2008-2015, land elevations derived from lidar and historic topographic...

Lidar-derived digital elevation models often contain a vertical bias due to vegetation. In areas with tidal influence the amount of bias can be ecologically significant, for example, by decreasing the expected inundation frequency. We generated a corrected digital elevation mode (DEM) for Suisun marsh using a modification of the Lidar Elevation Adjustment with NDVI (LEAN) technique (Buffington et al. 2016). GPS survey data (6912 points, collected across public and private land in 2018), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from an airborne multispectral image (June 2018), a 1 m lidar DEM from September 2018, and a 1 m canopy surface model were used to generate models of predicted bias across the...

Lidar-derived digital elevation models often contain a vertical bias due to vegetation. In areas with tidal influence the amount of bias can be ecologically significant, for example, by decreasing the expected inundation frequency. We generated a corrected digital elevation mode (DEM) for tidal marsh areas around San Francisco Bay using the Lidar Elevation Adjustment with NDVI (LEAN) technique (Buffington et al. 2016). Survey-grade GPS survey data (6614 points), NAIP-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, and original 1 m lidar DEM from 2010 were used to generate a model of predicted bias across tidal marsh areas. The predicted bias was then subtracted from the original lidar DEM and merged with the NOAA...
