The State Geologic Map Compilation (SGMC) geodatabase of the conterminous United States (https://doi.org/10.5066/F7WH2N65) represents a seamless, spatial database of 48 State geologic maps that range from 1:50,000 to 1:1,000,000 scale. A national digital geologic map database is essential in interpreting other datasets that support numerous types of national-scale studies and assessments, such as those that provide geochemistry, remote sensing, or geophysical data. The SGMC is a compilation of the individual U.S. Geological Survey releases of the Preliminary Integrated Geologic Map Databases for the United States. The SGMC geodatabase also contains updated data for seven States and seven entirely new State geologic...

The U.S. Geological Survey acquired high-resolution P- and S-wave seismic data across the Frijoles Fault strand of the San Gregorio Fault Zone (SGFZ) at northern Año Nuevo, California in 2012. SGFZ is a right-lateral fault system that is mainly offshore, and prior studies provide highly variable slip estimates, which indicates uncertainty about the seismic hazard it poses. Therefore, the primary goal of the seismic survey was to better understand the structure and geometry of the onshore section of the Frijoles Fault strand of the SGFZ. We deployed 118 geophones (channels) at 5-m spacing along a linear profile centered on the mapped surface trace of the Frijoles Fault and co-located active P- and S-wave sources...

This line vector dataset represents the faults and dikes used as input data for the Rio Grande transboundary integrated hydrologic model and water-availability analysis, New Mexico and Texas, United States, and Northern Chihuahua, Mexico.
These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This digital data set contains the geologic faults for the 1:250,000-scale Sherman quadrangle, Texas and Oklahoma. The original data are from the Bureau of Economic Geology publication, "Geologic Atlas of Texas, Sherman sheet", by J.H. McGowen, T.F. Hentz, D.E. Owen, M.K. Pieper, C.A. Shelby, and V.E. Barnes, 1967, revised 1991.

The New Madrid Seismic Zone presents significant seismic hazard to the central and eastern United States. We mapped newly-identified coseismic ridge-spreading features, or sackungen, in the bluffs east of the Mississippi River in western Tennessee. We use this mapping dataset in an accompanying manuscript to show that sackungen form during earthquakes on the Reelfoot fault and may fail in preferred orientations. Ultimately, these data can be used to infer fault source and mechanism and improve the paleoseismic record used in hazard models.
This data release contains machine-readable files accompanying the study “Quaternary Reelfoot fault deformation in the Obion River valley, Tennessee, USA" published by Delano et al. (2021) in Tectonics. The data release includes grain size analyses from three auger sites (TableS1_WilsonLoop_grainsize.txt, TableS2_Lanesferry_grainsize.txt, TableS3_BiggsFarm_grainsize.txt) and unit descriptions from three auger sites and a modern analog (TableS4_modern_floodplain_unit_desc.csv, TableS5_Wilson_Loop_unit_desc.csv, TableS6_Lanesferry_Road_unit_desc.csv, TableS7_Biggs_Farm_unit_desc.csv). A readme file (readme.txt) provides details for each file. Delano, J.E., Briggs, R.W., Thompson Jobe, J., Gold, R.D., and Engelhart,...

This dataset contains linework for a simplified Quaternary fault map of Puerto Rico, and is described in Table 4 and Figure 24 in the related manuscript. Faults are classified into three different classes based on the presence or absence of geologic evidence for Quaternary fault activity and tectonic origin, and this dataset includes faults that may have weak, equivocal, or limited evidence for Quaternary deformation or tectonic origin. See related manuscript for additional details on interpretation and use of the linework. Related manuscript: Thompson Jobe, J. A. R. Briggs, K. S. Hughes, J. Joyce, R. Gold, S. Mahan, H. Gray, L. ![]() This part of DS 781 presents data for the faults of the Point Sur to Point Arguello, California, region. The vector data file is included in the “Faults_PointSurToPointArguello.zip,” which is accessible from https://doi.org/10.5066/P97CZ0T7. Faults in the Point Sur to Point Arguello region are identified on seismic-reflection data based on abrupt truncation or warping of reflections and (or) juxtaposition of reflection panels with different seismic parameters such as reflection presence, amplitude, frequency, geometry, continuity, and vertical sequence. Faults were primarily mapped by interpretation of seismic reflection profile data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey between 2008 and 2014.

The Edwards and Trinity aquifers are major sources of water in south-central Texas and are both classified as major aquifers by the State of Texas. The population in Hays and Comal Counties is rapidly growing, increasing demands on the area's water resources. To help effectively manage the water resources in the area, refined maps and descriptions of the geologic structures and hydrostratigraphic units (HSUs) of the aquifers are needed. This digital map database presents the detailed 1:24,000-scale bedrock hydrostratigraphic map as well as names and descriptions of the geologic and hydrostratigraphic units of the Driftwood and Wimberley 7.5-minute quadrangles in Hays and Comal Counties, Tex. These digital data...

A fundamental question in seismic hazard analysis is whether <30º-dipping low-angle normal faults (LANFs) slip seismogenically. In comparison to more steeply dipping (45-60º) normal faults, LANFs have the potential to produce stronger shaking because of their increased possible rupture area in the seismogenic crust. While LANFs have been documented globally, examples of seismogenically active LANFs are limited. The western margin of the Panamint Range in eastern California is defined by an archetypal LANF that dips west beneath Panamint Valley. In addition, high-angle dextral-oblique normal faults displace mid-to-late Quaternary alluvial fans near the range front. To image shallow (<1 km depth), crosscutting relationships...
