The original time series and cross power data were stored in Binary format on 3.5" disks until further conversion was needed. To convert the time series and cross power data to a format that can be used for modeling, the original binary files were converted to ASCII format using Basic 4.0 code and associated subroutines (see Magnetotelluric_Original-Code_Binary-to-Ascii.txt and Magnetotelluric_Original-Code_Binary-to-Ascii-Subroutines.txt attached to the binary data ScienceBase item). The DaR project used these converted ASCII format files to create the EDI format files included in this data release. The binary data are considered the original data for the magnetotelluric survey, therefore, they are provided with...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center (GGGSC) collaborated with the USGS Science Analytics and Synthesis (SAS) team to preserve and release a subset of magnetotelluric data from the San Andreas Fault in Loma Prieta, California. The San Andreas Fault data were collected by the Branch of Geophysics, a precursor to the now GGGSC, between 1989 and 1994. The magnetotelluric data selected for this preservation project were collected in 1989 and 1990 using USGS portable truck mounted systems that measure the distribution of electrical conductivity beneath the surface of the earth. Truck mounted systems of this era output data to 3.5” discs, from which data were recovered...

In October 2016, we acquired an approximately 15-km-long seismic profile along a linear transect across the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay area. Our goal was to image previously unknown strands of the Hayward Fault zone and to better delineate the structure and geometry of the main trace of the Hayward Fault. Our profile started near the southern border of San Leandro, California at the San Francisco Bay shoreline, trended ENE through the northern edge of Castro Valley, California, and ended approximately 5 km WSW of San Ramon, California. The data were analyzed using refraction tomography modeling, reflection processing, and guided-wave analysis. The analyzed data are presented in separate reports by...

This product is the result of a comprehensive compilation of site-specific ground photographs taken where tectonic faulting and ground failure produced visible deformation that fractured and disturbed the ground surface. The resultant data is distributed as a tab-delimited text file. All post-earthquake photographs taken by investigators working for public agencies are in the public domain, including data that have been published in summary reports elsewhere.

The resultant data is distributed as collection of JPEG image files. All post-earthquake photographs taken by investigators working for public agencies are in the public domain, including data that have been published in summary reports elsewhere. These photographs are best viewed in context with fault rupture and other observations from the related KMZ file of summary field observations and photographs (https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/5c1d7ae0e4b0708288ca1322), or from the associated open-file...

In March 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey acquired seismic reflection and refraction data along an approximately 2.8-km-long profile across northwest-trending San Andreas Fault splays located at the Dos Palmas Preserve east of Salton Sea. To acquire the reflection and refraction data, we collocated shots and geophones, spaced every 3 m along the profile. We used 933 SercelTM L40A P-wave (40-Hz vertical-component) geophones with a sensitivity of 22.34 volts/meter/second to record 925 P-wave shots. We generated P-wave data using one of two active sources: 400-grain Betsy-SeisgunTM shots at approximately every 90 m and a 3.5-kg sledgehammer and steel plate combination at every 3 m between the seisgun shots. All data...
The bedrock geologic map database of the Woodstock quadrangle consists of highly deformed metasedimentary rocks of the Central Maine trough, including the Silurian Rangeley and Perry Mountain Formations and the Devonian Littleton Formation. The central, northern, and eastern parts of the quadrangle are underlain by the oldest rocks in the area, the Rangeley Formation. In the southwest and southcentral part of the quadrangle, metaturbidites of the Perry Mountain Formation and subsequent Littleton Formation overly the Rangeley Formation in a deformed F1 synform, herein informally called the Bagley Brook basin. The metasedimentary rocks were intruded by widespread syn- to post-tectonic granitoids of the Devonian New...

In April 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey acquired high resolution P- and S-wave seismic data across the suspected trace of the West Napa Fault zone in St. Helena, California. We acquired seismic reflection, refraction, and guided-wave data along a 215-m-long profile across the expected trend of the West Napa Fault zone. To acquire the reflection and refraction data, we co-located shots and geophones, spaced every 2 m along the profile. We used 109 SercelTM L40A P-wave (40-Hz vertical-component) geophones with a sensitivity of 22.34 volts/meter/second to record 108 P-wave shots, and 109 SercelTM L28-LBH S-wave (4.5-Hz horizontal-component) geophones with a sensitivity of 31.3 volts/meter/second to record 108 S-wave...

We acquired multiple types of controlled-source seismic data across the Hollywood Fault in Hollywood, Calif., and the Santa Monica Fault in Beverly Hills, Calif., in May and June of 2018. We acquired two separate profiles across the Hollywood Fault, and from those data, we can evaluate multiple seismic datasets, including guided-wave data, tomographic Vp data, and tomographic Vs data. From the datasets, we can calculate multiple seismic models, including Vp/Vs and Poisson's ratio models derived from tomographic Vp and Vs data, Rayleigh-wave-based Vs models, Love-wave-based Vs models, Vp/Vs and Poisson's ratio models (derived from combinations of tomographic-based Vp and surface-wave-based Vs models), P-wave reflection...

Transient electromagnetic (TEM) soundings were made in the San Luis Valley, Colorado, to map the location of a blue clay unit as well as to investigate the presence of suspected faults. A total of 147 soundings were made near and in Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, and an additional 6 soundings were made near Hansen Bluff on the eastern edge of the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge. The blue clay is a significant hydrologic feature in the area that separates an unconfined surface aquifer from a deeper confined aquifer. Knowledge of its location is important to regional hydrological models. Previous analysis of well logs has shown that the blue clay has a resistivity of 10 ohm-meters or less, which is...

Detailed geologic mapping and sample collection was conducted in rare bedrock exposures of the Denali fault zone during the summer months of 2013, 2014, and 2015 by the U.S. Geological Survey. Data include measurements of structural geologic orientations and documentation of fault zone and host rock characteristics. Representative samples were selected for measurements of fault vein attributes and electron backscatter diffraction studies to characterize deformation mechanisms. All station locations, pertinent sample information, and associated data are included in this data release.
