This Sediment Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the sediments sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), sediment collections were a composite of at least five randomly selected samples collected from each site. Per an internal summary report, sediment samples were collected using a stainless steel Eckman dredge. Analytical methods and QA/QC were directed by the Patuxent Analytical Control Facility (PACF) of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Per Dora Passino-Reader, the Geochemical & Environmental Research Group at Texas A&M University, College Station performed the analytical chemistry...

These data were compiled to determine whether transient population dynamics substantially alter population growth rates of sagebrush after disturbance, impede resilience and restoration, and in turn drive ecosystem transformation. Data were collected from 2014-2016 on sagebrush population height distributions at 531 sites across the Great Basin that had burned and were subsequently reseeded by the BLM. These data include field data on sagebrush density in 6 size classes and site attributes (seeding year, sampling year, random site designation, elevation, seeding rate). Also included are modeled spring soil moisture data at each site from the year of seeding to sampling. This data release includes associated software...

This data set consists of counts and lengths of fish collected as part of a 2015-2016 evaluation of shoreline remediation projects in the St. Clair River, Michigan, USA. Remediation sites were sites that had undergone shoreline softening to convert vertical seawalls to sloping banks, reduce water depths, create a gradual transition between shoreline to main channel habitats, and provide structure (e.g., root wads and boulders) for fishes and other aquatic biota. Control sites were other wade-able (less than 1 meter) areas along the St. Clair River where shoreline softening projects had not taken place. Control sites included public beaches and access points to the St. Clair River and generally had limited in-stream...

This dataset contains the physical collection information (e.g., sample location, date, gear type) and microsatellite DNA genotype of egg and larval Lake Sturgeon collected in the St. Clair and Detroit rivers in 2015 and 2016. Individuals were genotyped for 18 microsatellite loci (13 disomic and 5 polysomic). Alleles (base pair sizes) were recorded as presence absence scores (1:present, 2:absent, 0:missing data) for all previously observed alleles. Thus individual genotypes were recorded as pseudo diploid dominant phenotypes resulting in individual vectors of length n=205 for each genotyped egg or larval individual.

Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based fishery management and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. In support of binational Great Lakes fishery management, the objectives of this survey were to: provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to assess seasonal and spatial distributions of fishes in tandem with water quality information, and to assess year class strength. A systematic grid sampling approach with 41 stations was sampled via bottom trawl during June (Spring) and September (Autumn), starting in 2013. This data release adds 2023 data to...

Yes, all data values are reasonable and within the valid range for measurement. The data release consists of 15 tabular data files (csv). These data were compiled to compare patterns and potential drivers of leaf litter decomposition in the Colorado River downstream of Glen Canyon Dam between 1998 and 2022. Objective(s) of our study were to compare the breakdown of cottonwood (Populus fremontii), willow (Salix exigua), and salt cedar (Tamarix chinensis) leaves to a previous decomposition experiment from 1998 (Pomeroy et al. 2000) that was conducted in the context of much cooler water temperatures, higher phosphorus concentrations, lower New Zealand mudsnail densities, and salt cedar litter that was unaffected by...

Note: this data release has been deprecated. Please see new data release here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9347I2H. These data were compiled to estimate fine-fuel abundance and distribution across the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge in southern Arizona, USA. The objectives of the study were to develop and validate annual estimates of fine fuel (biomass of herbaceous vegetation) for the refuge and to assess changes in fine fuels through time in response to wildfire and prescribed fire. These data represent the amount of herbaceous biomass or fine fuels (kg/ha) present at a 10-m resolution derived from in-situ estimates of ground cover modeled with satellite imagery. These satellite image data were collected over...

This publication is a preliminary map and geodatabase of the coseismic surface rupture and other coseismic features generated from the August 9, 2020, Mw 5.1 earthquake near Sparta, North Carolina. Geologic mapping facilitated by analysis of post-earthquake quality level 0 to 1 lidar, document the coseismic surface rupture, named the Little River fault, and other coseismic features. The Little River fault is traced for approximately 4 kilometers and cuts the regional Paleozoic fabric (mean foliation, 063°/57°), and the dominant strike of joint sets are 0°–10°, 130°–150° and 320°–340°. Individual fault strands occur in an en echelon pattern within an approximately 10-meter-wide zone. Trenches across the Little River...

This data set, compiled by the USGS Lake Erie Biological Station, provides near-bottom measurements of temperature and dissolved oxygen for the Central Basin of Lake Erie. Data were recorded by self-contained environmental data loggers (PME, Inc., MiniDOT data loggers). The data loggers were deployed to collect data during August 2021 through November 2022 to better understand how hypoxia develops and influences fish habitat quality during lake stratification. The data loggers were deployed on acoustic telemetry receivers in a network designed to record tagged fish movements (Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System, GLATOS). Additional years of data collection are planned, and data release will be updated...

Coastal communities are uniquely vulnerable to sea-level rise (SLR) and severe storms such as hurricanes. These events enhance the dispersion and concentration of natural and anthropogenic chemicals and pathogenic microorganisms that could adversely affect the health and resilience of coastal communities and ecosystems in coming years. The U.S. Geological Survey has developed the Sediment-Bound Contaminant Resiliency and Response (SCoRR) strategy to define baseline and post-event sediment-bound environmental health (EH) stressors. These data document the location, sampling techniques and field conditions observed while collecting soil and sediment samples from selected stations in the northeastern US during the...

Sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) control is achieved in tributaries to the Laurentian Great Lakes by applying lamprey-specific pesticides (lampricide) to habitats containing larval sea lamprey. Lampricide treatments are cheaper and more effective in watersheds where dams block runs of adult sea lamprey and hence limit the distribution of sea lamprey larvae. However, dams impound water and those without fishways block movement of valued fishes, outcomes that are untenable for some stakeholders. Here, an alternative to physical barriers was tested to block adult sea lamprey; a portable and seasonal non-physical barrier of pulsed direct current that does not impound water, allows fish passage when not operated, and...
These data represent occupancy surveys conducted in long-term monitoring sites in Yosemite National Park in 2018 for three anurans, the Yosemite Toad (Anaxyrus canorus), the Sierran Treefrog (Pseudacris sierra), and the Sierra Nevada Yellow-legged Frog (Rana sierrae). The data include independent double-observer surveys and time-to-detection data to calculate detection probabilities and account for false negatives, or the failure to detect a species at a site where it occurs. These data support the following publication: Schimel, D.S., 2018, Editorial: Ecological Applications, v. 28, no. 4, p. 869–870, https://doi.org/10.1002/eap.1735.
Valley Water (formerly Santa Clara Valley Water District) provides stream stewardship, wholesale water supply, and flood protection for Santa Clara County, California, in the southern San Francisco Bay Area. A number of the reservoirs owned by the agency sit in the eastern foothills of the Santa Cruz mountains above the city of San Jose and in the watershed below the former New Almaden Mining District, which was historically the largest mercury (Hg) mining district in North America. Aquatic biota in a number of these reservoirs have elevated levels of Hg, presumably as a result of their downstream location relative to the former mining district. The form of Hg that most readily accumulates in aquatic food webs is...

Bravo Dome is a commercial natural CO2 field that supplies the gas to depleted oil fields for enhanced oil recovery. In order to understand the distribution of CO2 across the greater Bravo Dome region, including southeastern Colorado and northwestern New Mexico, and to assess the impacts of high CO2 concentrations on microbes in the subsurface, 7 samples were collected from sites associated with high natural CO2 concentrations. Four water samples were collected, two from wells producing within Bravo Dome, one from an oil and gas field north of Bravo Dome associated with high CO2 concentrations, the Oakdale field, and one sample from a shallow groundwater well on the Rafter K ranch that effervesces CO2. Three samples...
