This dataset consists of two tables with the results from two manipulative thermal experiments with juvenile coho salmon (May 2021) and juvenile Chinook salmon (May 2020) and include 1) gene transcription results and heat shock protein 70 abundance in coho salmon and Chinook salmon and 2) water temperatures to which fish were exposed during the experiment.

A fish’s diet is the integrated response of multiple ecological interactions including habitat use, foraging behavior, prey community characteristics, and inter-specific interactions. Fish diet samples have quantified how the invasion of white perch into Lake Erie in the early 1950s has influenced interactions with native yellow perch, which are similar in morphology and habitat use. Early research largely concluded that given the high foraging efficiency of white perch there is both high potential for inter-specific competition and that the invasion of white perch has negatively affected yellow perch. As part of a biannual (spring and autumn) Lake Erie Western Basin Forage Fish Assessment, the USGS Lake Erie Biological...

This dataset documents the onset of developmental stages of pallid sturgeon free embryos from hatch through melanin plug expulsion, when reared in the laboratory at five nominal temperatures (14, 17, 20, 23, and 26 degrees Celsius, ° C). Onset of developmental stages were recorded in days post-hatch (DPH) and cumulative thermal units (CTU). CTU are calculated as the sum of water temperature, in ° C, during the time of exposure, in our case, from the time of hatch to the time of sample preservation. Pallid sturgeon transition through a series of brief developmental stages during a free-embryo period from hatch to melanin plug expulsion, which is regarded as the approximate onset of exogenous feeding. Detailed characteristics...

This tabular data set contains information about the diets of angler-caught Lake Trout (Salvelinus namaycush), Walleye (Sander vitreus), Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), Coho Salmon (O. kisutch), Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar), Steelhead (O. mykiss), Pink Salmon (O. gorbuscha), and Brown Trout (Salmo trutta) captured between April and October of 2017 and 2018 from U.S. waters of Lake Huron. Diet items were identified to lowest taxa, enumerated, measured, and prey biomass determined.

Impacts of dreissenid mussels (Dreissena spp.) on Great Lakes ecosystems are well documented, and a better understanding of mechanisms that cause variation in mussel abundance is needed. An outstanding question is how much mussel biomass is consumed by fish predation. A significant difficulty for investigating mussel consumption by fish is that mussels in stomachs are often a mix of crushed shell and flesh. Here, we provide information on the relationship between shell-and-flesh dry weight measurements and flesh-only dry weight of two species of dreissenid mussel, quagga (Dreissena rostiformis bugensis) and zebra (Dreissena polymorpha), to be used in formulating conservative estimates of flesh-only dry weight in...

The USGS Lake Erie Biological Station’s East Harbor sampling program began in 1961 with the commissioning of the research vessel Musky II. It is the longest known continuous trawl survey in Lake Erie. In addition to spanning over 50 years, the data series is unique for three prominent design elements: 1) sampling was conducted at three depth strata; 2) replicate trawl samples were collected at each depth stratum; and 3) sampling was conducted during both day and night. Unlike other trawl series collected in Lake Erie, and throughout the Great Lakes, the East Harbor program is the only one to combine these sampling practices in a single survey. In 2012, the original vessel used since the inception of the East Harbor...

The data set contains sampling and catch data associated with a broad-scale experiment to examine dispersal of endangered pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) free embryos in the Missouri River of eastern Montana and western North Dakota. On 20190701, two age groups of pallid sturgeon including 771,707 1-day post-hatch (dph) free embryos and 200,786 5-dph free embryos were released and recaptured through 20190708 from six sampling sites in a 150-mile reach of the Missouri River. The free embryos were sampled using multiple boats and crews at the sites, and sampling for the free embryos was conducted at the river bed (bottom samples), in the middle of the water column (mid-water samples), and at the river surface...

In 2019, an experimental release of nearly 1.0 million free embryos of federally endangered pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) was conducted in the Missouri River of eastern Montana and western North Dakota. Dispersal of the free embryos and survival of the benthic larvae was assessed from 20190701 to 20190909 through 150 miles of the river. The data sets contain mean daily discharge and hourly water temperature data for the Missouri River, and mean daily discharge data for the Yellowstone River. Dates of the data extend from 20190701 to 20190909. Discharge data for the Missouri River were obtained from USGS gage 06177000 near Wolf Point, Montana. Discharge data for the Yellowstone River were obtained from USGS...

These data include goals, objectives, and performance measures from management plans and monitoring surveys related to fisheries management in the St. Clair-Detroit River System and the Western Basin of Lake Erie. Researchers extracted these data from existing management plans identified from on-line grey literature searches and discussions with collaborators and regional fisheries management personnel
