Using juvenile individuals of 3 species of carp (Family: Cyprinidae), we tested the potential for six amino acids to elicit an extracellular electro-olfactory response within the naris using gelatin-based electrodes. The amino acids L-alanine, L-arginine, L-aspartic acid, L-asparagine, L-glutamine, and L‑glutamic acid were tested on Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), Bighead Carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), and Silver Carp (H. molitrix) to provide a comparison among amino acids both within and among species. A piscicide delivery method was designed to selectively target black carp Mylopharyngodon piceus, an invasive species in North America which possesses specially adapted pharyngeal teeth for crushing mollusk prey. Bait was prepared by attaching a glass vial containing toxicant (antimycin A) to the exterior of Corbicula fluminea clam valve. The vial was designed to break by the force exerted from the fish’s (550 millimeter total length) pharyngeal teeth when the fish attempted to crush and consume the clam. This dataset documents the number of normally developed hatched free embryos, abnormally developed hatched free embryos, and viable unhatched embryos from two laboratory trials (shovelnose sturgeon during April and pallid sturgeon during May 2016) in substrate conditions designed to simulate potential fates within a dynamic riverine environment. Trials were performed with substrate treatments that consisted of clean glass (control), gravel, medium-coarse sand, and fine sand-silt. This dataset documents the length and developmental stage of pallid sturgeon and shovelnose sturgeon free embryos from the time of hatch through melanin plug expulsion (the approximate onset of exogenous feeding) reared in the laboratory at a constant temperature. Free embryos from 4 pallid sturgeon crosses and 7 shovelnose sturgeon crosses were reared separately in the laboratory at a mean temperature of 17.8 degrees Celsius (range 17.3–18.4 ). In 2019, an experimental release of nearly 1.0 million free embryos of federally endangered pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) was conducted in the Missouri River of eastern Montana and western North Dakota. Dispersal of the free embryos and survival of the benthic larvae was assessed from 20190701 to 20190909 through 150 miles of the river. The data sets contain mean daily discharge and hourly water temperature data for the Missouri River, and mean daily discharge data for the Yellowstone River.
