To support an investigation of the effectiveness of a large-scale river restoration project, several types of field data were collected from two gravel-bed reaches of the regulated lower Merced River in California's Central Valley, primarily in the fall of 2016. These data sets were intended to characterize salmon spawning habitat and identify factors influencing spawning site selection. This parent data release includes links to child pages for the following data sets: 1) Bulk samples of streambed sediment used to characterize the subsurface grain size distribution. 2) Pebble counts used to characterize the sediment grain size distribution of the bed surface. 3) Force gage measurements used to parameterize a...
In 2003–2005, systematic studies in four contrasting hydrogeologic settings were undertaken to improve understanding of source and transport controls on nitrate movement to public supply wells (PSW) in principal aquifers of the United States. Chemical, isotopic, and age tracer data show that agricultural fertilizers and urban septic leachate were the primary sources of large nitrate concentrations in PSW capture zones at Modesto, California (Central Valley aquifer system) and York, Nebraska (High Plains aquifer). Urban septic leachate and fertilizer (possibly nonfarm) were the primary sources of large nitrate concentrations in PSW capture zones at Woodbury, Connecticut (glacial aquifer system), and Tampa, Florida...

Surveys of channel and floodplain topography were used to characterize the morphology of two reaches of the lower Merced River in California's Central Valley and to parameterize a hydraulic model. These data were collected to support research intended to evaluate the extent to which large-scale restoration projects provided improved salmon spawning habitat. A related goal of this study was to improve our understanding of the geomorphic factors influencing spawning site selection by salmon. At the Merced River Ranch field site, river channel and floodplain topography was measured using a combination of real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS for wadable parts of the channel, an echo sounder for deep pools, and photogrammetry...

These data were compiled to accompany flow modeling work on Little Colorado river above the mouth (USGS gage 09402300). The data include example models in FaSTMECH and SToRM solvers in the iRIC framework, topographic data collected by LiDAR and total station in June 2017, and high water marks from nine historic floods. Other data also include location and other information for control points and gage structures. Topographic data include ground topography collected by LiDAR and channel bathymetry collected by total station survey of a 2500 meter reach of the Little Colorado River ending near the confluence with the Colorado River. High water mark data were collected by USGS personnel using total station surveys and...

These data were compiled to accompany flow modeling work on Kanab Creek near the mouth (USGS gage 09403850). The data include topographic data collected by a remote sensing detection light detection and ranging (LIDAR) system and surveying total station in June 2017, high water marks from six floods from 2011 to 2013, and control points and gage structures. Topographic data include ground topography collected by LIDAR and channel bathymetry collected by total station survey of a 600 meter reach of Kanab Creek, ending at the confluence with the Colorado River in Grand Canyon, Arizona. High water mark data include sets from six floods collected by USGS personnel using total station surveys.

This product includes a model archive using the iRIC-SAC Solver for indirect discharge computation of the spring snowmelt peak flow surveyed on May 27, 2023, and estimated to have occurred in early April 2023. The best-fit discharge for this flood is 3,500 ft3/s. Other data include topographic cross-section data, control points, and high-water marks collected by RTK GPS, and selected photographs of the survey. The location of this survey is a ~300-meter reach of Sand Creek ending at the upstream side of the Shell Creek Stock Trail bridge. Evidence of additional likely coincident floods on tributaries that enter Sand Creek between the Shell Creek Stock Trail bridge and the confluence of Sand Creek with the Little...

These data provide a comprehensive survey of peak-stage indicators along the Colorado River corridor between river mile (RM) 0 and RM 87 (see Figure 1 in the associated USGS-SIR). In 2008, the locations of peak-stage indicators in three short reaches downstream from RM 87 were measured using a handheld GPS unit (see Appendix 1 in the associated USGS-SIR). Total-station measurements were made using an established network of survey control that references the 2011 realization of NAD83 (NAD83 (2011)) (Kaplinski and others, 2017). The measurements were projected into the State Plane Coordinate System of 1983, Arizona central zone (FIPS zone 0202). Vertical positions are provided in both NAD83 ellipsoid heights and in...
