Diet contents of Deepwater Sculpin (Myoxocephalus thompsonii) were identified, enumerated, and measured to monitor the changes in the offshore benthic fish community within Lake Huron. Collections were made using a 21-m headrope with a 4.76mm square mesh cod-end with 10 minute contour trawl tows.. Deepwater Sculpin collected from the USGS fall forage (2003-2005 and 2010-2014) were counted and weighed en masse on board research vessel. Individual weights (nearest 0.001g) and measurements (0.1mm) were conducted in laboratory setting. Stomachs were extracted in laboratory setting (from esophogus to pyloric ceaca). Stomachs were stored in ethanol for later dissection. Stomach contents were removed in petri dish. All...

We analyzed tissue δ13C, δ15N, and δ34S of animals associated with hydrocarbon seeps on the lower continental slope of the Gulf of Mexico. We made discrete collections of fauna associated with four dominant chemosymbiotic seep fauna: vestimentiferan tubeworms, bathymodiolin mussels, vesicomyid clams, and Sclerolinum sp. (another siboglinid worm related to vestimentiferans). These collections were conducted in 2006 and 2007 using the manned submersible Alvin and the remotely operated vehicle Jason II, both operated by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. The purpose of this study was to use stable isotopes to explore potential nutritional sources and trophic interactions in these seep communities, especially those...

The primary objective of this study was to assess deepsea food web structure and trophic niches in Baltimore and Norfolk canyons, the adjacent slopes, and chemosynthetic seeps along the mid-Atlantic margin using stable isotope analyses (SIA) and isotope niche width analysis. We hypothesized that the isotopic compositions of canyon versus slope fauna would be distinct, given differences in the physics and chemistry of the canyons and slopes and resulting quality and quantity of the organic matter available to the benthos. These differences should be evident across taxa and among and within feeding groups. We also used SIA to estimate trophic positions of invertebrates and fishes and to examine changes in trophic...

These data were compiled for a manuscript that examines the riverine food-web structure of the Colorado River below Glen Canyon dam to its confluence with Lake Mead. Tissue from primary producers (vascular plants and algae) and consumers (aquatic invertebrates and fish) were collected before and after monsoon floods in 2006 along the 388 kilometer segment of the Colorado River in the Southwest US. Tissue samples were dried, ground, and analyzed for δ13C, δ15N, and δ2H stable isotope signatures and percent carbon and nitrogen. Analysis of these data focused on determining the proportion of terrestrial (allochthonous) vs. aquatic (autochthonous) organic matter sources at the base of the food web, trophic diversity...

Using a bioenergetic model, demographic data for the Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) population were compiled and used to estimate total prey consumption in the Colorado River, Glen Canyon , AZ. Additionally, other data including invertebrate diet, drift, and benthic measurements were used to make generalized estimates of daily production rates for the most common benthic invertebrate taxa. The primary objectives were to test a set of hypotheses regarding proximate and distal drivers that were regualating secondary production of invertebrate prey in Glen Canyon. These production estimates represent an estimate of aggregate prey items that include Chironomidae and Simulium arcticum [complex]), as well as amphipods...
The main route of exposure for selenium (Se) is dietary, yet regulations lack biologically based protocols for evaluations of risk. We propose here an ecosystem-scale model that conceptualizes and quantifies the variables that determine how Se is processed from water through diet to predators. This approach uses biogeochemical and physiological factors from laboratory and field studies and considers loading, speciation, transformation to particulate material, bioavailability, bioaccumulation in invertebrates, and trophic transfer to predators. Validation of the model is through data sets from 29 historic and recent field case studies of Se-exposed sites. The model links Se concentrations across media (water, particulate,...
