We explore the potential for applying broad ecological theories to interactions between soil animals and micro-organisms to generate a predictive framework within which more hypothesis led research can be undertaken. The paper stems from discussions during a workshop at the XIVth International Symposium on Soil Zoology. The possible linkage between biodiversity and ecosystem functions forms a good example of how soil zoology research can be productively stimulated by addressing a broader ecological concept but also how the concept can be tested below ground at fundamentally different scales to those commonly used above ground. Other areas of theory rapidly developing above ground, which are yet to be fully tested...

Rivermouth ecosystems are areas where tributary waters mix with lentic near-shore waters and provide habitat for many Laurentian Great Lakes fish and wildlife species. Rivermouths are the interface between terrestrial activities that influence rivers and the ecologically important nearshore. Stable isotopes of nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) in consumers were measured from a range of rivermouths systems to address two questions: 1) What is the effect of rivermouth ecosystems and land cover on the isotopic composition of N available to rivermouth consumers? 2) Are rivermouth consumers composed of lake-like or river-like C? For question 1, data suggest that strong relationships between watershed agriculture and consumer...

This data release includes individual lengths, total dry mass, and taxonomic classification for a subset of adult aquatic insects captured emerging from the surface of wadeable wetlands in cropland and grassland landscapes across a salinity/hydrology gradient (N = 14 wetlands in 2015, N = 15 wetlands in 2016). Sampling was completed in late spring, after ice off was complete and during the local bird breeding season. Wetlands were situated on 3 USFWS Waterfowl Protection Areas and 2 private farms in Stutsman County, North Dakota, USA. Other portions of this data such as sampling locations and pesticide concentrations are reported in Kraus et al. 2021 (https://doi.org/10.5066/P971S7IV)

Cold-water corals create complex structures, but our incomplete knowledge of their niche space limits our ability to understand their distribution and therefore the impact of the ecosystem services they provide in the ocean. The Richardson reef complex consists of over 150 km of linear reef tracts within an area of 75 km2 between 700-900 m depth. This reef experiences rapid shifts in temperature, and currents approaching 1 meter per second. The reef fauna cycle and sequester carbon and regenerate nutrients that help fuel the primary productivity of the region. Newly acquired multibeam sonar mapping data and predictive models indicate that cold-water coral reefs are more widespread than previously understood, necessitating...

This dataset includes stable nitrogen-15 and carbon-13 isotope analysis data derived from freshwater aquatic and semi-aquatic primary producers, invertebrates, and fishes collected from five sampling sites (and one pilot site) within the Owens River Gorge, Mono and Inyo counties, CA, USA between 2017 and 2021. These sampling efforts were conducted in conjunction with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s fish population surveys and invertebrate monitoring. Fishes sampled were Owens Sucker (Catostomus fumeiventris (Miller, 1973)), hybrid Tui Chub (Siphateles bicolor snyderi (Miller, 1973) x Siphateles bicolor obesa (Girard 1856)), Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792)) and Brown Trout (Salmo...
