This data release includes data and metadata on 1) the coverage and composition of plants 2) species specific plant traits 3) sampling locations and 4) environmental data. All sites were within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii Island. Plant cover data were obtained from National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program. Plant trait data was collected for these plots in 2014. This study aims to evaluate how traits of native and exotic plant species change along environmental gradients and what this suggests for plant competition and invasion.

This data release includes data and metadata on tree and shrub basal area as well as bird-mediated and passive seed rain for sites selected to have a range of understory cover under canopy trees (Metrosideros polymorpha and Acacia koa). It also includes seedling germination and survival data for a large-scale seed addition and grass removal experiment that varied both seed rain and grass cover. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study asks what thresholds of seed rain and native and exotic plant cover are needed for passive forest regeneration.
This data release includes data and metadata on 1) avian diet 2) seed rain 3) understory plant composition 4) seedling abundance and 5) sampling locations for these sites. In addition it includes data on seedling abundance, grass cover and light levels for a grass removal/seed addition experiment . All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. This study looked at multiple biotic interactions that potentially lead to self-reinforcing feedbacks within intact forest and degraded forest sites. Most of this study was done with sampling, however we also implemented an experiment in which we manipulated grass biomass and seed addition to specifically ask how these factors limit native...

Forests in Washington State generate substantial economic revenue from commercial timber harvesting on private lands. To investigate the rates, causes, and spatial and temporal patterns of forest harvest on private tracts throughout the central Cascade Mountain area, we relied on a new generation of annual land-use/land-cover (LULC) products created from the application of the Continuous Change Detection and Classification (CCDC) algorithm to Landsat satellite imagery collected from 1985 to 2014. We calculated metrics of landscape pattern using patches of intact and harvested forest patches identified in each annual layer to identify changes throughout the time series. Patch dynamics revealed four distinct eras...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) computed rasters of pre-solved values for the watersheds draining to the pixel delineation point representing the watershed's percent forested land cover from the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) 2016 data (land cover values 41-43). These values, which cover the conterminous United States at a scale of 30m pixel size, will be served in the National StreamStats Fire-Hydrology application to describe delineated watersheds ( https://streamstats.usgs.gov/ ). The StreamStats application provides access to spatial analysis tools that are useful for water-resources planning and management, and for engineering and design purposes. The map-based user interface can be used to delineate...

This data set represents initial forest communities developed for Isle Royale National Park. LANDIS-II requires an input data layer that contains the ages of each species cohort present within each cell of the landscape. To develop this layer, we matched the composition of forest inventory plots to a map of forest types, and randomly imputed U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Inventory plots within each matching forest type

All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. This study looked at multiple biotic interactions that potentially lead to self-reinforcing feedbacks within intact forest and degraded forest sites. This data, in particular, focuses on the basal area of different species of fruiting plants within 20m of all of the seedrain traps.

This data release includes data and metadata on litterfall rates, foliar nitrogen and carbon, grass biomass, soil nitrogen and carbon, and native outplant survival rates for an experiment that added large quantities of woody litter to a restoration forest in an attempt to lower soil nitrogen and exotic grass biomass. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study looked at the ability to alter soil nitrogen cycling, exotic grass biomass and native outplant survival with large quantities of Metrosideros polymorpha litter in a forest dominated by Acacia koa.
This data release includes data and metadata on litterfall rates of the two dominant canopy trees (Metrosideros polymorpha and Acacia koa) in a restoration forest in Hawaii.

Values for area of sustainable forest habitat for each species were obtained as the predicted occupied proportion of each 900 square meter pixel (i.e., occupancy probability x 900) within all forest patches deemed large enough to harbor a sustainable population of the species. The area required for a sustainable population of each species was derived from credible intervals associated with population trends from historical (1966-2015) BBS data (Sauer and others, 2017). For each silvicolous bird species in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, we assumed the minimum sustainable population was the number of birds needed to ensure ≤1% probability that the population would be extirpated (i.e., drop below a quasi-extinction...
This data release includes data and metadata on a large-scale seed addition and grass removal experiment that varied both seed rain and grass cover. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study asks what thresholds of seed rain and native and exotic plant cover are needed for passive forest regeneration. Specifically this data decribes the percent cover of grass over time in plots where we experimantally added varying levels of seed rain and/or manipulated grass biomass manually.
This data release includes data and metadata on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in sites where litter was experimentally manipulated.

These data were compiled for a comprehensive review of pinyon-juniper communities including Pinus edulis, Pinus monophylla, Juniperus osteosperma, Juniperus monosperma, and Juniperus scopulorum. Compiled are a list of references cataloged by the topic of interest resulting from the literature search. The characterization for each reference includes the focal species, descriptions of the site(s) the study was conducted at, type of study, any land management treatments and the measured response variables. The location data for publications that provided location information have also been compiled in order to compare the geographic distribution of these studies with the distribution of the focal tree species.

All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study asks what thresholds of seed rain and native and exotic plant cover are needed for passive forest regeneration. Quantifying natural seed rain rates in different habitat types was needed to better understand how these thresholds function.
