This data release includes data and metadata on bird-mediated and passive seed rain for sites selected to have a range of understory cover under canopy trees (Metrosideros polymorpha and Acacia koa). All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study asks what thresholds of seed rain and native and exotic plant cover are needed for passive forest regeneration. Quantifying natural seed rain rates in different habitat types was needed to better understand how these thresholds function.
This data release includes data and metadata for native outplant growth rates for an experiment that added large quantities of woody litter to a restoration forest in an attempt to lower soil nitrogen and exotic grass biomass. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study looked at the ability to alter soil nitrogen cycling, exotic grass biomass and native outplant survival and growth with large quantities of Metrosideros polymorpha litter in a forest dominated by Acacia koa.

In cooperation with the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) calculated over 40 different basin characteristics as part of preparing the Puerto Rico StreamStats application. These data were used to update the peak flow and low flow regression equations for Puerto Rico. These datasets are raster representations of various environmental, geological, and land use attributes within the Puerto Rico StreamStats 2020 study area, and will be served in the Puerto Rico StreamStats 2020 application to describe delineated watersheds. The StreamStats application provides access to spatial analytical tools that are useful for water-resources planning and management, and for engineering and...

This data release includes data and metadata on seedling counts and substrate cover in forest plots in Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaiʻi Island. Broadly, this study asks how seedlings densities relate to their microsites in terms of grass cover and nurse log and moss presence.
This data release includes data and metadata on 1) avian diet 2) seed rain 3) understory plant composition 4) seedling abundance and 5) sampling locations for these sites. In addition it includes data on seedling abundance, grass cover and light levels for a grass removal/seed addition experiment . All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. This study looked at multiple biotic interactions that potentially lead to self-reinforcing feedbacks within intact forest and degraded forest sites. Specifically, this data set provides grass biomass data for plots where we implemented a grass removal/seed addition experiment in order to look at how these two factors relate to each other...

Mangrove species dominance on Pohnpei island, Federated States of Micronesia was modeled with two geospatial model types: k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and random forest (RF) and a common set of predictors. Dominant mangroves were defined as species comprising the largest basal area per field plot. The RF model predicted species dominance for each species separately, resulting in 8 maps (one for each species). The maps of Rhizophora stylosa and R. mucronata dominance were combined because these species were difficult to tell apart in field identification (resulting in the 7 maps presented here). The KNN model produced one map, which shows all species' dominance locations in one raster layer. The KNN model results were...

All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. This study looked at multiple biotic interactions that potentially lead to self-reinforcing feedbacks within intact forest and degraded forest sites. Specifically, this data set addresses bird-mediated seed rain as measured by aerial seed rain traps under koa and ʻōhiʻa trees along two transects moving from intact forest uphill into restoration...

The avian diet data, in particular, encompasses three years of fecal sample collection from spring time mist netting activities. We identified all seeds that were found in fecals to give an idea...
This data release includes data and metadata on seedling germination and survival for a large-scale seed addition and grass removal experiment that varied both seed rain and grass cover. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study asks what thresholds of seed rain and native and exotic plant cover are needed for passive forest regeneration. As a part of that, we created an experiment that varied seed rain in order to ascertain if seedling recruitment exhibits threshold effects.
This data release includes data and metadata on tree and shrub identity and basal area within 5 m2 radius plots centered around old growth Acacia koa, planted Acacia koa, old growth Metrosideros polymorpha, and in open, exotic grass dominated sites. Our goal was to ask if understory communities differed between these habitat types and how this relates to other ecosystem factors such as seed rain and exotic grass cover. Broadly, this study asks what thresholds of seed rain and native and exotic plant cover are needed for passive forest regeneration.

Values for predicted probabilities of avian species occupancy were determined using colonization-extinction models (MacKenzie and others, 2003) as implemented in R (Version 3.4.4; https://www.r-project.org/) via the ‘colext’ function of the Unmarked package (Version 0.12-0; Fiske and Chandler 2011). Performance of a null model (without covariates) and 153 additional models that assessed the effects of geographic coordinates and habitat context covariates were evaluated using Akaike information criteria (AIC; Burnham and Anderson, 2002). When more than one model had substantial support, their respective model weights were used to spatially predict occupancy relative to covariate influence. Predictive model covariates...
This data release includes data and metadata on litter decomposition rates for Acacia koa (koa) and Metrosideros polymorpha (‘ōhi‘a) leaves in in different microhabitats. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study looked at the ability to alter soil nitrogen cycling, exotic grass biomass and native outplant survival with large quantities of Metrosideros polymorpha litter in a forest dominated by Acacia koa.

Forests in Washington State generate substantial economic revenue from commercial timber harvesting on private lands. To investigate the rates, causes, and spatial and temporal patterns of forest harvest on private tracts throughout the central Cascade Mountain area, we relied on a new generation of annual land-use/land-cover (LULC) products created from the application of the Continuous Change Detection and Classification (CCDC) algorithm to Landsat satellite imagery collected from 1985 to 2014. We calculated metrics of landscape pattern using patches of intact and harvested forest patches identified in each annual layer to identify changes throughout the time series. Patch dynamics revealed four distinct eras...
A summary data set of all fire polygons we could locate as of December 2007. We used multiple datasets to develop this layer, including data gathered from the internet, publically available databases, and personal contacts with dozens of agency personnel throught the western U.S. Data were assessed for utility (but not accuracy) and formatted for consistency. Each source data set was then attributed consistently with fields for record number and year (of fire). Because various resource management entities map fires somewhat independently (especially in more recent years) we merged overlapping polygons for each year. Users are encouraged to understand the contents of this data file before using it.

This data release includes data and metadata on 1) the coverage and composition of bryophytes and other ground cover, 2) seedling abundance, composition, and rooting substrate and 3) sampling locations. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. This study aims to evaluate the role of bryophytes in seedling recruitment and thus forest regeneration in different forest types. We compared bryophyte composition and coverage between tree species (Acacia koa and Metrosideros polymorpha) and forest types (intact forest and restoration forest) and then sampled native woody seedling recruitment in the bryophytes as well as other ground covers, such as leaf litter, bare soil, and exotic...

Broadly, this study looked at the ability to alter soil nitrogen cycling, exotic grass biomass and native outplant survival with large quantities of Metrosideros polymorpha litter in a forest dominated by Acacia koa.
