Spatial heterogeneity may have differential effects on the distribution of native and nonnative plant species richness. We examined the effects of spatial heterogeneity on native and nonnative plant species richness distributions in the central part of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, USA. Spatial heterogeneity around vegetation plots was characterized using landscape metrics, environmental/topographic variables (slope, aspect, elevation, and distance from stream or river), and soil variables (nitrogen, clay, and sand). The landscape metrics represented five components of landscape heterogeneity and were measured at four spatial extents (within varying radii of 120, 240, 480, and 960 m) using the FRAGSTATS...

This dataset contains measures of natural vegetation fragmentation for the Colorado Plateau Ecoregion calculated using FRAGSTATS, a program which produces a series of metrics that are focused on fragmentation at the individual patch, class, and landscape levels. The fragmentation surface (input to FRAGSTATS) was created from NLCD Impervious Surfaces, LANDFIRE EVT, NatureServe National Landcover, roads, utility lines, power plants, pipelines, geothermal wells, mines, wind turbines, and oil/gas wells. The following three fragmentation metrics generated by FRAGSTATS (contained in this dataset) were chosen as input variables to the terrestrial landscape intactness logic model:1.) Number of patches [NP attribute] 2.)...

This dataset depicts indices of forest fragmentation within the U.S. Northeast region. This dataset can help inform prioritization of landscapes for conservation through identification of more intact forested areas. Forest fragmentation was assessed using information derived from the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) and USGS 1:100,000 scale roads. Within each forested ecoregion in the World Wildlife Fund ecoregions dataset, landscape units (land units) were defined using U.S. Census Bureau TIGER highway networks. Land units were blocks of forested land bounded by highways and were required to be at least 2,000 hectares in size. Land units smaller than 2,000 hectares or areas within urban areas were excluded from...

We investigated butterfly responses to plot-level characteristics (plant species richness, vegetation height, and range in NDVI [normalized difference vegetation index]) and spatial heterogeneity in topography and landscape patterns (composition and configuration) at multiple spatial scales. Stratified random sampling was used to collect data on butterfly species richness from seventy-six 20 50 m plots. The plant species richness and average vegetation height data were collected from 76 modified-Whittaker plots overlaid on 76 butterfly plots. Spatial heterogeneity around sample plots was quantified by measuring topographic variables and landscape metrics at eight spatial extents (radii of 300, 600 to 2,400 m)....
