The diagnosis of bacterial disease in freshwater unionid mussels has been hindered by a lack of baseline information regarding the microbial communities associated with these animals. In this study, we cultured and identified bacteria from the hemolymph of stable mussel populations from the upper Mississippi River basin and compared results to mussel populations associated with a mortality event in the Clinch River, VA and TN. Several bacterial genera were consistently identified across mussel species and locations, appearing to be part of the natural bacterial flora. Pebble counts were performed to assess the bed surface grain size distribution at different habitats within a reach of the Big River near Washington State Park, Missouri. These data were collected in support of research assessing the hydraulic conditions of freshwater mussel habitat in the Big River. One component of this investigation was to examine the theoretical stability and instability of sediment particle sizes that are present within mussel habitats as well as within nearby reference habitats. We generated multilocus DNA sequence data and traditional morphometric measurements to evaluate species boundaries in Fusconaia mitchelli. We sequenced three loci: the protein-coding mitochondrial DNA genes cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 and NADH dehydrogenase 1, and the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 1. We also took three measurements, maximum length, maximum width, and maximum height, of mussel shells for morphometric analysis.

These data were collected in support of research assessing the mussel communities and characteristics of freshwater mussel habitats in the Big River (Albers and others, 2016; Roberts and others, 2016). This data release contains river bed surface grain size measurements, water-surface elevation measurements, and digital elevation models (DEMs) for select reaches of the Big River, Missouri. These data were collected in support of research assessing the hydraulic conditions of freshwater mussel habitat in the Big River. The individual metadata associated with each data type describe the process steps, data inputs and sources, and the locations where the data were collected.
The use of carbon dioxide to control aquatic invasive species (AIS) prompted an evaluation of its effects on native freshwater mussels that may reside in areas of infusion. We exposed juvenile mussels (~6-mo old) of two species, the fat mucket (Lampsilis siliquoidea) and the federally endangered Higgins’ Eye (L. higginsii) to CO2 concentrations proposed for AIS control (24,000 – 96,000 µatm pCO2 ) for 28 d followed by a 14-d recovery period and compared their survival, growth, and behavior. Freshwater mussels of the order Unionida are among the most endangered animal groups globally, but the causes of population declines are often enigmatic with little known about the role of disease. In 2018, we collected wild adult pheasantshell (Actinonaias pectorosa) and mucket (Actinonaias ligamentina) during an epidemiologic survey investigating an ongoing mussel mass mortality event in the Clinch River, USA. The role of disease in freshwater mussel declines has been largely ignored due to the lack of appropriate diagnostic tools and metabolomic markers of stress. Mussels in this study were either fed a prepared diet or unfed and their condition was assessed with the observed changes in fatty acid content of their tissue. This dataset contains quantitative fatty acid data from nonlethal (biopsy) sampling of foot tissue. These data may provide biomarkers indicative of freshwater mussel’s metabolic status.
This dataset includes information from multiple taxa collected from four main reaches in the Upper Mississippi River Basin, including La Grange reach of Illinois River, Pool 2 of Mississippi River, Pool 19 of Mississippi River, and the St. Croix River. This dataset contains digital elevation models (DEMs) for four reaches of the Big River in Missouri. The study reaches are as follows: Site W (STW), Rockford Beach (RFB), Phelps Bend (PHB), and Washington State Park (WSP). The reach DEMs were created in support of research assessing the hydraulic conditions of freshwater mussel habitat in the Big River.
