Understanding how sea-level rise will affect coastal landforms and the species and habitats they support is critical for crafting approaches that balance the needs of humans and native species. Given this increasing need to forecast sea-level rise effects on barrier islands in the near and long terms, we are developing Bayesian networks to evaluate and to forecast the cascading effects of sea-level rise on shoreline change, barrier island state, and piping plover habitat availability. We use publicly available data products, such as lidar, orthophotography, and geomorphic feature sets derived from those, to extract metrics of barrier island characteristics at consistent sampling distances. The metrics are then incorporated...

This habitat model was developed to identify suitable habitat for the federally-endangered least Bell’s vireo (Vireo bellii pusillus) across its current and historic range in California. The vireo disappeared from most of its range by the 1980s, remaining only in small populations in southern California. Habitat protection and management since the mid-1980s has led to an increase in southern California vireo populations with small numbers of birds recently expanding into the historic range. Predictions from this model will be used to focus surveys in the historic range to determine where vireos are recolonizing and to track the status and distribution of populations over time. We used the Partitioned Mahalanobis...

Digital grids that represent the depth of flood waters for an 8.8-mile reach of the North Platte River, from 1.5 miles upstream of the Highway 92 bridge to 3 miles downstream of the Highway 71 bridge, were created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Cities of Scottsbluff and Gering. The flood-inundation maps, which can be accessed through the USGS Flood Inundation Mapping Science website at http://water.usgs.gov/osw/flood_inundation/, depict estimates of the areal extent and depth of flooding corresponding to selected water levels (stages) at the USGS streamgage on the Platte River at Scottsbluff, Nebr. (station 06680500). Near-real-time stages at this streamgage may be obtained on the Internet...
This part of the data release contains the geospatial data collected by the USGS during the Pecos River salinity assessment. The data includes a feature class of the study area boundary and the Pecos River Basin boundary, the picks that were used to develop the depth to the base of the 16 geologic units, a feature class of springs, seeps and sinkholes compiled in the study area, a feature class of the USGS streamflow-gaging stations locations in the study area, a feature class of the locations of the saltwater disposal wells in the study area, and a feature class of areas of interest with respect to salinity. These digital data accompany Houston, N.A., Thomas, J.V., Ging, P.B., Teeple, A.P., Pedraza, D.E., and...

Heavy rainfall occurred across Louisiana during March 8-19, 2016, as a result of a massive, slow-moving southward dip in the jet stream, which moved eastward across Mexico, then neared the Gulf Coast, funneling deep tropical moisture into parts of the Gulf States and the Mississippi River Valley. The storm caused major flooding in north-central and southeastern Louisiana. Digital flood-inundation maps for a 16.5-mile reach within the communities of Folsom and Covington near the Bogue Falaya River in Washington Parish and St. Tammany Parish, LA was created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to support response and recovery operations following a March...
Five principal components are used to represent the climate variation in an original set of 12 composite climate variables reflecting complex precipitation and temperature gradients. The dataset provides coverage for future climate (defined as the 2010-2040 normal period) under the RCP8.5 emission scenario. Climate variables were chosen based on their known influence on local adaptation in plants, and include: mean annual temperature, summer maximum temperature, winter minimum temperature, annual temperature range, temperature seasonality (coefficient of variation in monthly average temperatures), mean annual precipitation, winter precipitation, summer precipitation, proportion of summer precipitation, precipitation...

The development and the generation of the datasets that are published through this data release, were based on the results and findings of this report: Kohn, M.S. and Patton, T.T., 2018, Flood-Inundation Maps for the South Platte River at Fort Morgan, Colorado, 2018: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2018-5114, 14 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20185114. The geospatial dataset contain final versions of the raster and vector geospatial data and its related metadata, and the model archive dataset contains all relevant files to document and re-run the surface-water hydraulic model that are discussed in the report. Digital flood-inundation maps for a 4.5-mile reach of the South Platte River at...
