In many subsurface situations where human health and environmental quality are at risk (e.g., contaminant hydrogeology petroleum extraction, carbon sequestration, etc.),scientists and engineers are being asked by federal agency decision-makers to predict the fate of chemical species under conditions where both reactions and transport are processes of first-order importance. In 2002, a working group (WG) was formed by representatives of the U.S. Geological Survey, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Department of Agriculture, and Army Engineer Research and Development Center to assess the role of reactive transport modeling (RTM) in addressing these situations. Specifically...
Dispersive transport of groundwater solutes was investigated as part of a multispecies reactive tracer test conducted under spatially variable chemical conditions in an unconfined, sewage-contaminated sand and gravel aquifer on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Transport of the nonreactive tracer bromide (Br) reflected physical and hydrologic processes. Transport of the reactive tracer nickel (Ni) complexed with an organic ligand (NiEDTA) varied in response to pH and other chemical conditions within the aquifer. A loss of about 14% of the Ni mass was calculated from the distribution of tracers through time. This loss is consistent with reversible adsorption of NiEDTA onto the iron and aluminum oxyhydroxide coatings on the...

These data sets present results from the analyses of chlorinated ethene compounds in samples of rock core collected from boreholes 84BR, 84BR, 85BR, 86BR, 87BR, 88BR, and 89BR in the mudstone underlying the former Naval Air Warfare Center, West Trenton, New Jersey.
This report provides a full digitization of historic groundwater-quality and depth-to-water data from Mendenhall and others (1916) Water Supply Paper 398, “Ground Water in San Joaquin Valley, California” in a modern format suitable for further analysis of California’s water supply resources. Included are geochemical data for over 400 wells collected by Mendenhall in the fall of 1910, as well as depth-to-water and well construction information from over 4000 wells compiled by his team from over 15 years of well surveys throughout the San Joaquin Valley. Additionally, these data provide geospatial and geochemical data for sampled wells in California's San Joaquin Valley (SJV) in support of the publication: Jeffrey...

Depth-to-water data in the San Joaquin Valley, CA were collected in 1910 and published in Mendenhall and others, 1916. These data were used to create a depth-to-water contour of the Valley described in Plate 1 entitled "Map of San Joaquin Valley, California showing artesian areas, ground-water levels and location of pumping plants", which includes a depiction of geographical areas where flowing well (artesian) conditions existed in 1910. These "Areas of flowing wells" have been converted into a digital vector format (ArcGIS Shapefile) for use in future research.

This USGS data release contains 2013 streamflow, baseflow, and precipitation data from three hydrologically-diverse streams in the United States used to develop a conceptual framework for effectively anticipating water-quality changes resulting from changes in agricultural activities. The framework combined generalized concepts on the movement of water, the environmental behavior of chemicals and eroded soil, and the designed functions of various agricultural activities. The framework addresses the impacts on water quality of a broad range of agricultural chemicals and sediment across a variety of hydrologic settings. • Chesterville Branch near Crumpton, Maryland, (USGS site ID - 01493112) had substantial baseflow...

This data release provides analytical and other data in support of an analysis of nitrogen transport and transformation in groundwater and in a subterranean estuary in the Eel River and onshore locations on the Seacoast Shores peninsula, Falmouth, Massachusetts. The analysis is described in U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2018-5095 by Colman and others (2018). This data release is structured as a set of comma-separated values (CSV) files, each of which contains data columns for laboratory (if applicable), USGS Site Name, date sampled, time sampled, and columns of specific analytical and(or) other data. The .csv data files have the same number of rows and each row in each .csv file corresponds...

We tested three models of mixing between old interbasin groundwater flow (IGF) and young, locally derived groundwater in a lowland rain forest in Costa Rica using a large suite of environmental tracers. We focus on the young fraction of water using the transient tracers CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC-113, SF6, 3H, and bomb 14C. We measured 3He, but 3H/3He dating is generally problematic due to the presence of mantle 3He. Because of their unique concentration histories in the atmosphere, combinations of transient tracers are sensitive not only to subsurface travel times but also to mixing between waters having different travel times. Samples fall into three distinct categories: (1) young waters that plot along a piston flow...

One anticipated benefit of ecosystem restoration is water quality improvement. This study evaluated NO3-N and phosphorus in subsurface waters during prairie establishment following decades of row-crop agriculture. A prairie seeding in late 2003 became established in 2006. Wells and suction cup samplers were monitored for NO3-N and phosphorus. Nitrate-N varied with time and landscape position. Non-detectable NO3-N concentrations became modal along ephemeral drainageways in 2006, when average concentrations in uplands first became <10 mg NO3-N L−1. This decline continued and upland groundwater averaged near 2 mg NO3-N L−1 after 2007. The longer time lag in NO3-N response in uplands was attributed to greater quantities...

This dataset contains the groundwater data collected at the Vienna Wells Superfund site in Vienna, Missouri by the U.S. Geological Survey. Concentrations of tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), and 1,1,2-Trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane (CFC-113) are provided in micrograms per liter. Wells are divided into shallow(0) and deep intervals (1). Samples were collected from 2013 to 2016 and averaged for purposes of the accompanied report. Note: A sample with a Depth_bott and Depth_top of 0 is a sample from a spring collected at the surface. These data support the following publication: Wilson, J.L., Limmer, M.A., Samaranayake, V.A., Schumacher, J.G., Burken, J.G., 2017, Tree Sampling as a Method to Assess...
